View Full Version : Gvac Wonders About Dr Steve and His Committment to Medicine
Hey brother...
Have you ever given serious thought to quitting medicine and doing something completely different, or is it so much in your blood that you can't even comprehend doing something else?
I guess what I'm asking is if being a physician is your ultimate passion in life.

I briefly flirted with the idea of doing radio for a living...then I listened to my own show and realized it's a fun hobby but not a career option.
The honest answer is I can't even comprehend doing something else. As you know, I started out in Tee Vee doing championship wrestling (audio engineer and cameraman at different times). Someday I'll tell the story of the epiphany that made me change course and go to medical school.
My degree in Radio, TV and Motion Pictures did influence me, though...for years I looked for a way to combine my experience in media with my medical career. It wasn't until Opie put out the call for "show ideas from the pests" that it all clicked.
When are you moving down here, by the way?

I hope the day that you reveal your epiphany comes sooner rather than later. I'm willing to bet it's hilarious!
And why do you always sell yourself so short? I think you've got a good flow to your show, and a damn good radio voice.
Seriously.
I wouldn't blow smoke up your ass.
It is nice to hear someone who loves their work, though. I'm glad you have no regrets with the path you've chosen.
I also commend you on coming here tonight and completely cleaning out the questions thread! You're a man on a mission.
As far as when I'll be joining you down in lovely Tennessee, that is still undecided as yet. The ball is rolling down there, but the economy has held a few things up. Hopefully I'll know relatively soon, and when I find out, you'll be among the first to know.
Thanks again, buddy.

My question for Dr Steve is, what would the health risks be if one were to have smoke blown up their ass?
By the way I agree with Gvac as far as your on air performance.

thanks, dd! you're both nuts, but I appreciate it, I really do.
regarding the smoke up the ass thing...the colon can absorb drugs quite readily; in hospice we'll sometimes shove a morphine tablet up someone's rectum who can't swallow while we're waiting for the IV meds to arrive...it works that well. So if you blew tobacco smoke up someone's ass, they would absorb nicotine into their system, albeit more slowly than if they inhaled it (the lungs are the most efficient transporters of drugs like nicotine into the bloodstream due to their permeability and HUGE surface area). I read about a guy once who died from a champagne enema...(i know you're waiting for the punchline here, but it's a true story) he died of alcohol toxicity. If he'd been drinking it the champagne, he would have passed out or thrown up before he reached a toxic dose (well, most of the time), but flooding his colon with it and plugging it up with the enema bag made him absorb a ton of alcohol all at once, causing unconsciousness and eventually death. I read about another guy who died after self-administering a concrete enema. That's a whole 'nother story though.
