my first post after all these years, and i'm sure i'll get nailed, but....am i the only person in the world who hates the music beds they have playing almost constantly? i know they didn't do this back on WNEW, and lately, they have one playing almost constantly. i find it really distracting to try to listen to someone speaking with music in the background.

I didn't even know there was a word for it--music bed.

The've done it for years, even at WNEW. Once you notice it though it's like Pandora's Box, you can never un-notice it.

i notice it, and like it. of course the bed and levels have to be right.

for instance. on friday when talking about what they didn't like about themselves, the bed was the theme from forrest gump. a perfect choice.

I like the beds, and usually Chris Tanley makes some great, hip choices. It gives the show some texture and atmosphere. As was said above, the levels are critical. Apparently Earl used to occasionally grab music, but I could never hear it in my car because he was too timid to turn it up above a tiny little whisper in the background. Tanley's got the balls to crank that shit.

I particularly like it when the connection between the music bed and the topic is not blatantly obvious, and requires a little extra thinking to figure out.
