I agree with you Ikea...and the straw that broke the Camels back for me was the poster for Episode II. It gives me mixed feelings. I think what is happening is that majority of energy in advertising is spent in trailers. Sometimes though after seeing movies, I wish that the people that made trailers would make movies (Pearl Harbor perfect example and Apes)...

The episode 2 poster focuses on the lame love angle. we want to see clones and we want to see battle scenes, we don't want to see Titanic redone.

I love when a movie poster focuses on what the movie is going to be about...rather than they focus on the sex symbol of the movie (porno is of course an exception to this case). For example the Latter Pearl Harbor posters focused on Ben Affleck, Kate Beckinsale, and Josh Hartnett...A fucking historical event in US History and we are supposed to focus on these three assholes?!?! Oyyy Veyyyyy!!

Pearl Harbor at least tried an interesting poster strategy, making 40s-esque recruitment posters with the characters but the most oft scene one was the crappy one you talked about. but yeah, the JAWS poster was great simple but it got the point across.
