So my chick's computer shit the bed. It's loaded with viruses and my efforts to fix it have returned no positive result. I just tried to do a system restore and I get a message saying that this feature has been turned off contact your network administrator. Can someone please help me? She runs XP and does not have backup cd's. Anyone know how to help me stop pulling the hair out of my head?

Just put the disc in and reboot, if it doesn't offer the option to boot off cd, you have to change boot options. Either there's an option for it when the computer is starting, or you have to change priority in the BIOS.

can you reboot from the pc? the hp i have has the option to reboot from the hard drive, it will wipe out some programs, the computer will be like it was when you first got it, it will need tons of updating and some reloading, but will save your stuff (pics, music, etc.). they are just in a file in the computer you have to find later, mine was in my computer/c drive/documents and settings. at the start up hit f10, and go from there. if not put the boot cd in and go, you'll lose everything on the pc though. good luck.

Yeah, just share the folder they're in.
Right click the folder, click properties, then sharing, turn file sharing on, give it a name.
Then go to the other computer and go to my network places and find it.
Might not be that easy, but that's how it's supposed to work.
You don't have a thumb drive?

Go to Best Buy, buy a hard drive enclosure, take the hard drive out of the case, put it into the enclosure, plug it in to a different computer, move the files, put the hard drive back in, return the enclosure.
Since you wont be loading the OS on the hard drive and just using it as a USB device you'll also be able to run a virus scan on it with out worrying about infecting anything.
I suppose that is all a bit complicated, but it would work fairly easily.
Can you still get into Windows on her broken machine? If so you could just share the folder and load it up over the network from yours and copy everything.
You don't have a thumb drive?
Oh yeah that too, just go buy a thumb drive and dump everything onto it.

This a good time to dl ubuntu and install it side by side so you can safely access your windows partition without worrying about the virus

Might be tricky installing Ubuntu on a Partition, then reinstalling Windows.

Definitely do the thumb drive, but the enclosure is good to have around. But they're much cheaper online like at Newegg. Make sure you scan the thumb for viruses.

alright, next issue: I saved some of the pics and I got xp up and running but now the cable modem and a few other things aren't working because windows cannot find drivers and I cant connect her puter to the web due to xp not finding the modem driver. I have no idea what type devices she has in there ie. brand model version. How do I get drivers to work?

You will have to go to the manufacturer's web site and download the drivers fro that model on your good computer. Burn the drivers to a cd and install them on her computer. This is the simplest method.

Just an update for the few following: I finally got everything up and running and have the OS and Drivers backed up on cd. What finally worked was going to dell's website and putting her 'service number' in and dl the appropriate drivers. I installed everything, then had to uninstall everything, then reinstall everything in the correct order. It was a learning experience for sure. Thanks guys.

You can boot from the cd you dl with ubuntu, its called a live cd, with said cd you have access to your partitions.
Its always good to have a live cd around, easy way to save files in these cases
