View Full Version : How Do I Deodorize My Garage?

Oh Wise Oracle, I have a problem ...
My garage reeks of rotted potatoes (that I couldn't cook because I felt like Death warmed over crossed with something the cat dragged in) and lawn pesticides.
I know that a certain amount of industrial stank is normal for a garage, but I can't stand the stench.
What's the best way to deodorize a garage? I thought maybe an open box of baking soda would work to absorb a lot of the odors, but am seriously concerned about spillage, since I am a klutz and will probably want to be in-and-out of the garage for rakes and brooms when leaves begin falling any day now.

For starters, (if possible) I would isolate all of the pesticides and lawn products to a deckbox or shed. A lot of the deck boxes are on clearance this time of the year. If the smell still lingers, investigate more.
I have an attached garage and my kids bedroom is above it. Gasoline cans, propane and most smelly crap are outside.
I don't know if it helps, but I recently had a strong smell of ammonia in my shed. It was an old bag of fertilizer that got wet and baked until it smelled like a piss factory. Good luck.

Put a few cups of white vinegar around the garage. Let sit for a day or two. No more smells.

Thanks to you both!
I'll have to add the tips to Matty's fall "honey-do" list! (Oh and it might be a good idea for us to move the pesticide/herbicide stuff somewhere else ... our 2nd bedroom is above our garage and we'll be using it full time in the spring!)

Take everything out of the garage and then on your hands and knees scrub the fuck out of the garage with some very powerful cleaner.
After that clean everything you are putting back in the garage and make sure you organize it.
Then once a month put a hour or two aside and do it all over again.
This should not be a problem and if it is do not waste time sitting around bitching about just pull up your boot straps and get to work.

I'm better than a bloodhound right now.
However, this doesn't change the fact that the garage stank makes me ill.

dont be afraid to shake that baking soda out, and sweep it up later. more exposure = more absorption.

I will have to think about that.
I'd rather have pool participants donate to one of the two charities I support than try to win any money for themselves, so I have to think about what kind of a prize to offer someone who wins instead of money for themselves ... call me kooky, but I think everybody wins that way! (Also both charities are 501(c)(3) charitable organizations so donations are tax-deductible...can I get a w00t! ???)

Funny .. I was gonna say that!

If I go for the activated charcoal, what are the advantages over baking soda?
Does it have to be spread around or do you basically open a bucket and leave it sit?
Lastly, where does one acquire activated charcoal? I tend to associate that with fish tank filters, so the gut says "pet shop" but it seems like I will need more than a filter pack for my garage. So, would Home Depot or Lowe's carry it?

just have a bong session in the garage. that will clear out the odors.
really, you need to air that fucker out first. remove the physical stank. then you will have to hunt down the residual stank. there is a product called "what odor" that removes cat piss smell. trust me. i have a pissy cat, and this product works.
you can try the white vinigar. you can also try odor absorbsion pails, they work too.

The next nice weekend, we'll have to do that. I want to be able to park my car in the garage when the weather gets nasty!

Might I add, this may not be the best chore for you to be doing. As one who handles pesticides regularly, I don't think a Mom to be should be inhaling the vapors if they are strong enough to smell. You are not talking about household cleaners here. Err on the side of caution.

keep the garage door open all day if possible.scrub and clean the floors, nooks, and crannies w/ a germ killing solution.stop throwing your used tampons in the garage and you'll be ok

I'm not gonna do it myself; that's what I have a husband for!
Besides, the smell is enough to make me queasy ... when my morning sickness was worst, it did actually make me vomit. I'd rather not vomit every day.
At present, I no longer use the garage as my main entry to the house.

I have a witty retort, but it's mean to Matty.
I don't need to encourage the fuckos around here to do that.

Oh, so Matty is still alive. I was thinking the smell was his decomposing body in the garage after you placed it there following a brutal morning of morning sickness.

i believe walmmart sells it by the fish stuff for their filters.
It spreads decently but is very very porous and can even take the smell out of natural gas they add in. my bad.
or search the nets!

Thus far moving the pesticides/lawn products and scrubbing the floor are great ideas.
You can buy one of the large rubbermade containers to place on your deck or under the awning in your back yard to put the products in.
Second, with a push broom and a bucket of dish detergent/water scrub the floor and gently rinse it out. Do not get the sheet rock wet though. Then use Kat's Idea, a bottle of white vinegar distributed evenly over the floor using the push broom.
When it dries, all is great.
