And the reason, people got sick of the flags were the rednecks acting like morons with it then bush rushing into Iraq when I dont think a majority of the country really supported that action.

I still blame bush for not bringing the world together at that time, he had a chance to unite everyone and he fucked it up, I still wish mccain would have been president then instead of that moron because he fucked it all up.

Hell I wish mccain was president now, he reaches across the party lines more.

I heard this story recently.

A bunch of russian guys who were working in the towers decided to take the day off and have a guy's day out, get together, get drunk, etc. The wives probably wouldn't take too kindly to it, so they don't tell them. So, they are partying, not realizing that at the same time the towers are burning. The phone rings, and a worried, nearly hysterical wife tries to find out where the guy is. He calmly tells her that he's sitting in his office and everything is fine, as she's watching the burning towers on TV.

every available bit of wall space at the Hunter College subway station was covered in missing person flyers for the next year and everyone took the time to read them. everyone did to give that chance that maybe the family member was found.

It shouldn't have affected people in the rest of the country and that's understandable. In fact, it infuriated me when others claimed to have been affected by the attack as much.

I had an aunt who told me and later my wife about how she knew how we felt because at that time she lived across from an air force base in Montana or North Dakota, and that was a target too.

you shouldn't be infuriated. yes, it is probably insensitive for people to compare "HOW" affected they were.

You just reminded me, there was a web site that was set up quickly to search for names in hospitals. Because it was set up so quickly, it wasn't set up correctly. I went on that site and every time I typed in a name of a friend, their name was added to the list, not searched for... it created a lot of confusion in first 72 hours.

As for your story, you have a reason to be affected because of those facts. My aunt had none of those connections.

Yeah I think it affected everyone to some extent, mainly because up until then people thought we were untouchable by shit like that, I really think it shook a lot of people to the core when they saw a symbol of our nation get hit.

Now the understanding part is kinda bullshit, you may have been scared because it was a target but it wasnt hit yet so you cant really understand the chaos that must have reigned around that area for the next few weeks. I have worked jobs up there so people had to have been freaked but to say I understood how they felt would be a lie and just plain idiotic.

Nice compassion there buddy.

Seriously, terrorism isn't new. Oklahoma City, Madrid, London, Moscow, Baghdad, Tokyo, all have had terrorist attacks, big, major ones. Yes, 2000 people died, it was traumatic to watch, but statistically it's an insignificant number compared to the overall amount of violent deaths in America and especially the world.

If you wish to privately remember that day, there should be nothing that is stopping you. But this demand for a national day of sorrow is somewhat egotistical.

I live about 30 miles outside of New Orleans. I didn't have any damage or loss due to the storm. But I had may friends and family who lost everything (homes and belongings). I was affected but not to the extent of others. So I get where you're coming from. Katrina didnt affect people as much because its something you saw coming, it wasnt like the storm just popped up over night and trapped people, how hard would it have been for people just to leave town and find a relatives house or a motel room for two nights to stay in?

Then all the political bullshit for the governor and mayor really made me not give a shit, yet another thing that bush should have said, "fuck both of you, get out of the way we are taking care of our people"

Nobody can ever accuse me of being a bush supporter because I thought he was a royal fuck up, but I still think the current admin is almost as fucked up, just on the left instead of the right. I have a general distrust of all politicians.

The thing I remember most 8 years ago was the fear. The idea that 4 different planes crashed into building and crashed into fields just freaked me out. The idea that at any moment during that time a plane could be just smashing down into the building I was in or the street I was on. I was only in a 2 story building but still it was just crazy.

I don't know anyone who died that day. My Wife works across the street in the financial center. I could not reach her that morning. I was pretty confident that nothing happened to her. I knew she walked under the WTC from the train to her job. I think the point I sort of freaked was when the first tower fell. I heard it on the radio, so i could not see it actually happen. But when the first tower fell, all I could picture was it toppling right over, not like it did straight down. So when I hear that I started to worry. Friends and family were calling me to see if they got in touch with her. Which sort of made me freak a little more. Everyone was on their cell phones and so no service. After about 2 hours I finally spoke with her and she was fine. Remember when I first saw her after that...picked her up on 4th ave. in Brooklyn. Stopped my car in the middle of the street to hung her.

So I guess I am grateful that I don't know anyone who died, but I will always remember the fear. No matter where you are in the country or even the world, that fear affects you.

But this demand for a national day of sorrow is somewhat egotistical.
national day- maybe. but by using your argument, should people in Oklahoma city stop remembering their dead?

yes post WTC was damn scary as well. I live very close to JFK airport and it was eerily quiet. The occasional sounds of fighter jets to break the silence. Seeing Battle ships off of Long Beach (NY) added to the feeling.

You remember all you want, but this isn't a national tragedy. It was a New York/DC + Plane crash tragedy. If you personally knew someone who died, you can mourn as long as you need. But this bullshit of every 9/11 hearing a person say "You know, I was in NY just a week before it happened." Ok. So what?
"You know, 3 people on my brother's block died that day." Did you know any of them? Did your brother? No? Well then what's the significance of that statement? How many people would have died on that block in a normal year? At least as many, maybe more.
