View Full Version : Public Execution: Would You Watch?

If criminals on death row were executed live on TV, PayPerView, etc. would you tune in?
Fez stated that although he's pro-death penalty, he would not watch.
Ron seemed to find it hypocritical, and I guess in some sense it is, but I think it's how the majority feel.
Just like Fez has stated that he's anti-hunting but pro eating meat, I believe that's how most people feel. They want the job done but they don't want to be the ones doing it or witnessing it.
Although I know this thread will turn into a Pro vs. Con death penalty argument, I just want to know if you'd watch, and why or why not.

No.
Way too creepy. Not my thing at all. Plus I'm totally opposed to the death penalty.

I am unsure how I feel about the death penalty because I question which is more cruel - sudden death or a lifetime of being locked in a cell.
If someone is unrepentant and psychotically evil they are obviously mentally defective. Is the answer to punish them by locking them in a cold cage for the rest of their days or to prematurely remove them from existence?
That being said, I would not watch.
I even refuse to watch beheadings, maimings, and other such morbid videos. It holds no attraction to me.

It would be a dispicable practice that I could not get behind.

Pretty much. I never have any desire to watch or see those type of things.

Nope.
I don't need that in my life.
I have no problem with a death sentence for horrific, violent and heinous crimes, but I don't need to see it.

Exactly.
Although the process of death appeals to me, and since the process in the US appears to be fairly peaceful I could watch one or two. This does not mean I support the death penalty, just interested in the death process.

I'm not really pro-execution, but I'd probably watch public executions.

I'd have no problem watching as long as the criminal was guilty without any doubt. Granted he or she would have also had to do some heinous shit, deserving of death (i.e. murdering people, pedophile, etc)

Your basic run of the mill murderer I would have no ambition to watch, but the sadistic rapists, pedophile murderers I would not mind watching.
I admit that it makes me twisted for wanting to see it. Just speaking the truth.

I wonder if people would watch a high profile execution, like if we ever captured Bin Laden.

I vote yes.
I've believed in public executions for years....makes people think twice before doing something bad.

If executions are allowed by a democracy, it also seems morally obligatory for the government to make executions available for public viewing, and for citizens to view them.

I agree.
I think if we are going to do it, it should be viewable by the mass public.
I also would prefer if we were to televise these that we spice it up a little, lethal injection is way to sterile and non-exciting imho.
For heinous murderers we should really make it painful and terrifying.
All of you hypocritical motherfuckers watched the Saddam Hussein hanging video.

What is the financial burden on the state of incarcerating somebody for life if they're like 21 at the beginning vs. cost of lethal injection by the time same prisoner is like 26? I don't see the death penalty as so much a revenge thing or even punishment on the criminal, but more of revealing society of the burden of having to deal with an extremely negative element. Needs of the many vs. needs of the few. I am on the fence on whether to support death penalty or not. I def would not get any joy or anything positive out of having to watch one.

Idk, I have issues with death penalty, but people who are absolutely 100% provable guilty of a capital murder should die.
Like when they find semen in a dead 7yo and the janitor admits to it.

I'd watch it. I'm fortunate to not be in an environment were people are being killed in front of me or near me, so to be able to see death happen while safely eating a healthy salad sitting on a couch would be fascinating.

Ive watched the Nick Berg beheading and was utterly repulsed. I would watch one probably out of curiosity and be done.
It is important for there to be witnesses, government & medical officials, victims relatives and the offenders family but not the general public.
I could do away with the death penalty. I think it should be used in cases like pedophiles however, I would think its a lot tougher to keep someone in prison for life than to end it for them.

i am really surprised some version of running man or gamer or some kind of gladitor vs criminal fight has not been sanctioned in some backward 3rd world country.
the ratings would be great.
and if there is a buck to be made i am sure the carnies have thought it.

there is only 1 person that i would have watched get offed. my best friend growing up had an older brother who, for the lack of a better term was a mad dog. he got convicted of brutally murdering a young man who he called his friend, and got the death penalty.
growing up he was violent towrds everyone, mother father, brother, you name it he tried to attack it. he broke into and trashed many houses on the road we grew up on, robbed 2 churches, and had a part in ,but didn't get sold out on, the gruesome murder of 2 men a the park a few years before he got cought. he may have killed other people. when he got put down the world actually got a little better, no worse off.

seeing nick burg murdered is different I believe, he was an innocent by all standards. Seeing an innocent person executed should be hard. Now if we were executing Burg's executioner, I could get on board.

yeah, I love the lawyers saying lethal injection is "cruel and unusual punishment", not taking into effect the TERROR and sometimes TORTURE, people sentenced to the death penalty used, to kill people.

They don't need to "take it into effect" because legally it's totally irrelevant as to the question of whether or not the means of execution are cruel and unusual.

I would never watch one, but I'm sure plenty of people around here would like to go to THIS ONE. (http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/09/12/virginia.sniper.execution/)
Possibly if I had a vested interest in a particular case.
I don't know if I could handle a beheading though. When I was in Riyadh we weren't allowed to go to the beheadings they had every Friday.
