I ask the congregation, am I getting old or are my students just sheltered?

Being that Jim Carroll died this past weekend, I mentioned it in my class this week (~65 students) and only 5 or 6 people knew who he was. This was shocking to me as I thought he was well known.

Some background: My class is mainly juniors and seniors in college so they are mostly in their early 20's and I am in my mid-20's. I am originally from the north, so maybe he was just popular back home?

So, old or sheltered?

Old.

Jim Carroll was never really that recognizable or had that much of an impact.

Not slamming the guy because he was definitely interesting, but he's a cult pop culture figure at best.

I'm 40, and I remember when "People Who Died" was a semi-popular song. I didn't know who sang it until about 5 years ago when I saw the artist name on an 80's CD. It wasn't until about a year ago that I was re-watching Basketball Diaries and saw on the cable guide that it was his story and put the two together.
