Senator Ted Kennedy’s dying request that Massachusetts law be changed to allow for an interim appointment to his now vacant seat in the U.S. Senate is being debated Thursday, September 17, 2009 at the State House in Boston.

Remember a short time ago when they voted to NOT allow the Republican Governor to nominate for Kerry's seat? This is truly gross negligence of power.

Yeah, it's pretty fucking retarded. But not surprising coming out of Massachusetts.

Wouldn't it be gross negligence or abuse of power?

I hate to nitpick but I felt like an immigrant for a second when I read that sentence.

Either way, blah. They need to make sure there is a senator in place. An election will take six weeks. If the vote on healthcare is done in the interim, MA would not have a vote.

The special election is, I think, the first week in January. That's, what, 13 weeks from now? Don't they take at least a week off for Thanksgiving? Then they leave sometime in mid December for Christmas then come back in January?

So they're going to name an interim Senator for 7 or 8 weeks? Then that Senator will get full pension (which I think is 100% of a Senator's salary) and prime health benefits for life. Geniuses.

Mass. Gov says Obama discussed Kennedy replacement (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090918/ap_on_re_us/us_kennedy_successor)

The Democratic Gov of MA and Obama talked about changing the law – at the Kennedy funeral no less.

“Gov. Deval Patrick (D)... also said White House aides have been in contact frequently ever since and pushing for the change so they can regain their filibuster-proof majority in the U.S. Senate.”

How dumb can people be to take this shit? Where’s the outrage. And bho himself is involved in pushing for this change in the law. He obviously has a major interest in getting someone in place this fall with all that’s going on. He is now compounding an earlier abuse of collective power with another.

As it weren't enough to actually have the nerve to try to change this law in any case. And now the gov is a Democrat and they want to change it back! This is such naked bullshit!

It's not a gross negligence of of power... it's politics. This is the system we've all agreed to. If you want to change, you should have voted more Republicans in.

I always find it funny when people point at state or local politics and shout "I CAN'T BELIEVE WHAT SCUMBAGS THEY ARE!"

Yes they are. Massachusetts is trying to change the rules, but then again almost every state pulls this shit with stupid rule.

MA: good ol' boy politics, northern style. I understand Kennedy's drive for healthcare reform, but you can't circumvent democracy to achieve it.

If the vote on healthcare is done in the interim, MA would not have a vote.

Every state takes that risk when they continue to vote for the same guy over and over.

They would have 1 instead of 2.

According to Jefferson

"A democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where fifty-one percent of the people may take away the rights of the other forty-nine"
