I am in the market for a new King mattress. Why is buying a mattress such a stressful thing?
We definitely are getting a king and prefer plush-nothing too hard.
Anybody out there really like or hate their mattress?

I have the signature series (http://www.sealy.com/Posturepedic/posturepedicCompare.aspx) and this is the best mattress I have ever slept on. Cost me $1200 for a queen, but I think it's well worth it.

We got a Kingsdown pillow top about 2 years ago... quite possibly the single greatest purchase I've ever made.

I looked at the Kingsdown Sleep to live 600 series. Very pricey, but extremely comfortable when we tried it in the store. However, I read reviews and about 50% percent loved it and 50% hated it. Made me think twice.

We did the same thing, and read the same things... I guess we're in the 50% that loves our.

There is a mattress company out there called Therapedic. It seems to be an off-brand, or at least not a top brand. I've seen it for sale in BJ's. Anyhow, we got a pillow-top from them six years ago and it still sleeps wonderfully. We only got the single pillow top, not the double sided one, because it wasn't so mushy. I think it was about 800 bucks for the mattress and box spring set.

Simmons Beautyrest Exceptionale. A little high priced but outstanding.
Make sure you wheel and deal with the mattress shop because they always bargain. I went close to closing on a Saturday night and the guy gave free delivery, free frame, free tempurpedic pillows, free hypoallergenic mattress cover and rolled the tax into the price.

I have a Select Comfort and love it. If I ever have to move, it makes moving easier and it weighs nothing so changing sheets is easier too. My friend got those temperpedic version that have in Bobs stores called Bobapedic and he loves it, but that shit is heavy as hell. Like 300 lbs, serious!
When you're going to the mattresses, find a spot over on the West Side. Try 309 West 43rd Street.

I use this (http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=110910&RN=41&). It has a remote, so you can make it as firm as you want it.
I have a 2" thick memory foam pad on top of it.
I used to get back-aches with a coil-spring matres so I switched.
Also you can deflate it and roll it up if you need it out of the way...

I have a Tempurpedic mattress and it is incredibly comfortable and good for my back, but it makes me sweat in the summer. I have to sleep w/ a fan blowing on me.

must be fun to shag, especially when you are sweating your ass off just lying there as it is.

We are saving up for a select comfort or a memory foam serta or something...can't remember what it was called. For the time being we bought a 4 inch memory foam mattress topper for our bed at home and one for our camper bed. We have been sleeping really great since we got them. They are around $150 on sale at Kohls. Very worth the money for a temporary fix.

We just got one a few weeks ago and love it. I'm always warm anyway so I didn't notice a big difference because I always sleep with the fan on and keep the a/c around 69 or 70 at night.

If you do go to a mattress store like Sleepy's walk out on them after finding one you like and make sure you gave them your phone number. They'll call you up a few days latter wanting to haggle. Don't pay list prices at mattress stores as they are usually very over priced.
Furniture and department stores, like JC Penny, are much cheaper, I paid only $800 for a king sized Sealy (or Simmon? Can't remember) at my local one during their every few months mattress sale.

The thing is, most good matresses have a grace period where you can get a full refund or exchange if you don't like it so it doesn't HAVE to be stressful. You might not be able to get that at Sam's or a discount/outlet place but if you're that unsure then you need to make sure you can exchange or return it. It's usually a 60 or 90 day trial.

We did the same thing!! We had an okay mattress but I decided to get one of those memory foam toppers at Kohl's and we've had it for a couple years and it made an amazing difference!!
One thing for sure, when it comes to a mattress, it's worth spending the extra bucks for great comfort.

Exactly right, Aggie. I bought a new mattress a few weeks ago through 1 800 Mattress, and before that I was also stressing. The thing is, just make a choice and if it doesn't suit you, you can exchange it for something else you might like. I bought a Queen size plush Sealy mattress and its very comfortable and I love it. So does JerseyRich. ;)

We went with the Tempurpedic Celebrity.
It will probably take a week or two to get used to and if we don't like it, there is a 90 day period where we can return it. AS far as the heat goes, the guy said with the new design, that problem does not really exist. However, he did say that all Tempurpedics come with an odor for the first few days. I guess we have some work to do!

yep, ours still smells a little but it's not terrible. it didn't take that long for our bodies to get used to it. i think you'll love it! especially if you're a side sleeper like me. it's soooooo much better than a coil mattress. you'll be shocked at how much better you sleep.

I, too, am a side sleeper and I toss and turn several times a night. I also wake up with aches and pains in my neck and back. Hopefully, the new bed will help with that.
The salesman said to kneed the bed to get the smell out. How long have you had yours?

The smell goes away within a few days. I didn't realize how much my bed helped my back until I was in a car accident and have been throwing my back out for every little thing since. The last time I injured my back really badly, the only time it felt better was if I was laying in that bed.
I sleep on my stomach which is apparently the worst way to sleep ever.

we didn't kneed it. we bought it labor day weekend and they delivered it that wednesday. i think you'll really like it. i used to toss and turn all night and i maybe only do it twice a night now but i don't even realize it. i used to wake myself up everytime i would turn over in my old bed.

Why buy a mattress when you could find one at the landfill?
