I would start with the Dept of Education. Eliminate it completely. Its not needed. Local property taxes fund public schools. Why should there be a cabinet level position and a huge bureaucracy for that?

The DoD budget is too bloated. Should be cut I understand that 2 wars are going on, but there are a lot of programs/weapons that really arent needed. Obama was right about cutting that missile defense shield in Eastern Europe

Homeland Security is a joke. Silly rules about taking shoes off and no liquids on planes enough said.

Department of Homeland Security is the poster child for this.

I'd toss the NSA in there, too.

NASA receives government funding.

They were wrong about the meteor that was supposed to end the world.

I say cut them back and spend the money on another round of cash for clunkers.

With advances in technology, education in this country needs to be completely re-thought. I like your ideas, but wouldn't scaling back the DoD budget potentially destroy some towns in this country?

Department of Education should be dismantled.

Defense budget could be scaled back a cool 25% by admitting that no empire short of the Hellenic Empire could conquer Afghanistan. Save $100bn a year.

As long as the ministries of love and truth are receiving adequate funding, we will be ok.

fcc & fda are bloated. fcc could focus solely on infrastructure & fda shloud just get the ax.

I agree with you on fcc, but don't we need the fda to make sure we don't get poisoned?

No way, man, the market always sorts itself out and works out in our favor, just like WMT told us with health care.

Haha, well I guess ultimately companies that provide tainted foods will crumble, unfortunately that will only happen after 17,000 people die from eating bad spinach.

Ah, the free market economy.

With his, WMT's, and most "free market" proponents view, I think crime will just "correct" itself as well. Women will travel in packs to avoid being raped. People will put iron gates on every window and door. Vigilantism will fill in the gaps. Why do we need police to regulate our behavior?

The person who gets mugged? Oh well. Same for the person who bought PJs for their kids and didn't realize they were made of gasoline and kindling. It is a free market, not a perfect one.

And the poor can count on donations from their wealthy overlords if they need things like healthcare. Because only irresponsible people have sick children.

Sadly I doubt any president would be willing to risk cutting homeland security, at least not during their first term.

This -- if you roll NSA into another agency.

Plus Veteran's Affairs (roll it back into DoD), Education and Director of National Intelligence (CIA can do that).

That's the idea. The long and short of it is that I think those functions should be covered between the CIA and (primarily) the FBI.

How about the Supreme Court? They have like 9 people up there! Come on, I mean, Judge Joe Brown seems to do quite well with just himself, why can't the SCOUTUS?

I believe its the 3rd largest employer in this country, after Wal Mart and the Postal Service.

When DHS was started and some of the agencies were put under this title, do you know that they spend millions swapping out the standard "G" government plates, for plates designated "DHS", now they did not wait until the particular car was being retired, they came in and changed somewhere around 150,000 plates, just to redesignate them. Total waste imho.

Leave the DoD and VA alone, although I would completely revamp the way DoD does contracts and add a bit more oversight adding to ways of saving money.

Dept. of Education is useless, and cut:

Administration for Children and Families (ACF)
Administration on Aging (AoA)
Administrative Committee of the Federal Register
Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts
African Development Foundation
Agency for International Development
AMTRAK (National Railroad Passenger Corporation)
Appalachian Regional Commission
Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board (Access Board)
Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Interagency Coordinating Committee
Bureau of Industry and Security (formerly the Bureau of Export Administration)
Bureau of International Labor Affairs
Bureau of Public Debt
Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion
Chief Acquisition Officers Council
Chief Financial Officers Council
Chief Human Capital Officers Council
Chief Information Officers Council

And that is just part of the way through the Cs.

I agree.
We should be able to shave at least 75, if not 100 billion from defense.

There is some sense about the shoe and liquid deal.

But terrible mistakes were made reorganizing the intelligence community after 9/11.
It was claimed that information from the lower levels was not getting to the top dogs, so what did they do?
They added 2 or 3 more layers of bureaucracy for information to flow through.

What they should have done was revamp the FBI counterterrorism section and not added this director of national intelligence, the DHS and all the attendant bureaucrats.
They should have held those responsible for spiking investigation requests that would have led to the disruption of the 9/11 plot, instead of promoting and giving them $20,000 performance bonuses. Those bastards should have been fired on 9/12, along with Tenet and Condoleezza "What comes out of a Chinaman's ass?" Rice...

The DEA needs to be gotten rid of before anything else. Eliminate it completely. Let the ATF handle illegal drug activity, since they no longer regulate tobacco (that is regulated by the FDA now).

that's just TSA. DHS has 22 agencies under it.
that's like saying you hate the justice department because of the stamp taxes on cigarettes.
