It's a commercial for their new record. They want people to buy their new record, and ad does nothing more than let the public know that they have a new album, and where they can get it.

It's also worth mentioning that the song featured in the video is easily the poppiest, catchiest, most commercially accessible thing the band has ever done.

exactly fezident. it's a commercial of them playing live music, for a store they did a promotion with and who released their album 2 days before it actually came out. there's a difference between "selling out" and trying to sell your album, pearl jam is obviously doing the latter.

This whole thing of acts selling records exclusively with one retailer really seems to be working out for most of them. This would probably be just a new Pearl Jam record, sort of sent out into the world, but now they have the power of Target behind it pushing it. Similarly, most AC/DC albums in recent years had been greeted with a ho-hum, but when they let Wal-Mart put its might behind "Black Ice", it really took off.

The obvious exception is "Chinese Democracy", but I'm not blaming that on Best Buy really. That album was DOA. Everyone figured after such a long time, it couldn't not suck.
