View Full Version : Drying "oregano" really fast

I have been growing some "oregano" and I REALLY want to use some. I am all out of "oregano" and can't afford to buy any right now, so I want to use some of my homegrown. I don't want to dry it in the oven or the microwave because that can affect it negatively.
I would like to ask the wise oracle for a solution because I really love oregano and I am to impatient to wait, I want to have a taste of it now. :smoke:
Thanks in advance

We put some "oregano" we found in pantyhose and put it in the dryer, and the whole "oregano crop" was ruined.

Speeding the drying process will only ruin your crop. Said herb must be dried naturally.
Clothespin it to hanger, stem up. That way the oregano goodness runs out of the stem and to the flavorful leaves and buds. Put it in a paper bag and then put it in the attic (if you have one). This will speed it along somewhat.
In the meantime go grab a 40.

thanks for all the replies. l wrapped a small sample in a paper towel and placed that in sock and used a hair dryer to blow into the sock for about 5 mins. lt worked alright but is no substitute for proper curing.
please keep the suggestions coming. The first frost / harvest is getting close.

Perhaps to wait until 'Oregano' is at a radio event in Manhattan. When 'Oregano' walks outside afterward, you DRY HIM OUT!

thanks again everyone.
I encourage you all to grow your own "oregano" the quality of Homegrown "spices" far surpasses that of "store bought" with a little experience. This is the first "oregano" that I have grown in about 10 years and if I can wait until it fully ripens I will be amazed but rewareded. Damn I love "oregano" flash forward a month or so and I will even enjoy it for breakfast. "Oregano" goes great with coffee.

I've been off "oregano" for almost a month now. Why do I want some all of a sudden?
Is it sad that when I smell a skunk now, it smells good to me? I need help.

if you use a pipe to deliver the oregano, you should be able to use it without drying it.
Wonder if a food dehydrator would work?

just dried one out.
Cut up into individual oregeno buds
rig up a small "washline" with string
hang them by clipping the stem ends to the string (spacing them)
I bought 50 small binder clips at Staples for a couple buck (they work great)
then blow air over them with a fan, or a small ceramic heater on low heat.
Any other drying method sucks, and should not be used...

I've never grown my own "oregano", but I have always heard about drying it out. Why is this needed? When I buy "oregano" from my local retailer is it already dried out? It doesn't really seem like it. I just never understood the need.

I know that you can effectively re-moisten your oregano by placing a baby carrot in the bag with the too-dry-and-overly-flammable oregano overnight. It is possible to overdo this, but if you remove the carrot at the right time, you are left with the perfect moisture-to-oregano content, and there is no loss of flavor or its effectiveness as a spice.
Usually the oregano is gone before it gets that dry, but sometimes the farmers' market has overstocks. You can't be too choosy if the marketplace could be hot and you want to get back to the cool side of the tracks.

Yes, it is, very much so. When its cut its literally a wet thing. the standard way I know of dryin it is hanging it upside down and letting it sit for a few days.

Well the first frost is here... Harvest time.
I will be enjoying my "oregano" soon. More later on the chosen drying method. It looks really good and I think the quality is some of the best I have ever grown.
Everyone should have a spice garden. It is a great hobby with wonderful returns.

this is the best I have grown yet and I will be honest with you. I did nothing other than some pruning and the initial potting. This plant was a volunteer that showed up in the edge of the yard right next to my door. I thought it was Jah's way of telling me to get back to growing. So I repotted it and basically let it go, the plant is a weed so not much is neccesary (especially in a ga climate). there are some concerns if you grow inside. but outside just make sure it gets good sun, and that the soil doesn't dry out for long. Always water immediately if you see wilting. Nitrogen is always good for overall growth.
Go for it... take the power away from the "oregano" black market
