That and it would be a fucking nightmare for those of us that live here.
Plus the cities that host them usually end up ultimately LOSING money because of it. God knows how much that loss would be magnified with Daley et al running things.

But yeah, send the Olympics to Rio instead over this...because the crime there is SO much better.

The sad thing is that with the amount of gun violence in this city and, well, everywhere in America, this part is morbidly refreshing:
No knives and no guns were used in Thursday's fight. Just fists, feet and boards.
We're bringing the classic rumble back.

While it's a largely overreactionary and ineffectual law, all the "taking away rights stuff" is pretty melodramatic. People can still legally own firearms in Chicago, nor is there anything in the much vaunted 2nd Ammendment that states that people must be able to legally own handguns.

Stolen from legal gun owners. Gun laws are misplaced and don't try to deal with the reality that a lot of people have needlessly large arsenals of guns that end up getting stolen and putting guns on the street. Add to that gun shows and less than legitimate gun stores that sell off the cheap guns used in the majority of crimes and Congress scared shitless of creating new but perfectly reasonable gun controls.

That's not what I said.

People get them outside the city. I am not positive, but I don't think there are any gun manufacturing plants in Chicago. Unlike marijuana, guns must be manufactured, for the most part, by large corporations.
The guns are then sold legally, but in many times recklessly, to people who then sell them or get them "stolen."
Gun regulations are less effective because they are not uniform. If it is easy to get a gun outside of Chicago, it is relatively easy to enter Chicago with that now "illegal" gun. City gun laws are not as effective as state wide or national regulations would be.
For now, the supreme court is on the fence whether the 2nd Amendment applies to the states. The court has never ruled, that a state could not ban guns completely. But, this is a rather lengthy discussion. It was nice to hear Anthony again go on about how little he knows about the 2nd Amendment, his favorite subject.

http://georgewbush-whitehouse.archives.gov/news/releases/2008/01/20080107-3.html
President Bush Meets with Chicago 2016 Bid Committee and United States Olympic Committee Members
For Immediate Release
Office of the Press Secretary
January 7, 2008
THE PRESIDENT: I want to thank the members of the 2016 Chicago bid to get the Olympics. Listen, Mr. Mayor, you and your committee have put together a great plan. It's a plan that will make America proud.
They say that the Olympics will come to Chicago if we're fortunate enough to be selected, but really it's coming to America, and I can't think of a better city to represent the United States than Chicago.
President George W. Bush and Chicago Mayor Richard Daley hold up a T-shirt touting Chicago 2016, during a meeting Monday, Jan. 7, 2008, with with members of the Chicago 2016 Bid Committee and the U.S. Olympic Committee. Said the President, "This country supports your bid, strongly. And our hope is that the judges will take a good look at Chicago and select Chicago for the 2016 Olympics." White House photo by Joyce N. Boghosian This is a well thought out venue. There will be -- the athletes will be taken care of. People who will be coming from around the world will find this good city has got fantastic accommodations, great restaurants. It will be safe.
And so I -- this country supports your bid, strongly. And our hope is that the judges will take a good look at Chicago and select Chicago for the 2016 Olympics.
Thank you all.

Honestly, it's a good choice: the Olympics have never been in South America (and only once in Latin America, the 1968 Mexico City games), Rio will probably bust their ass to put on a hell of a show, seeing their chance to establish a presence on the world stage (sort of like Beijing 2008), and Rio's time zone is only 1 hour ahead of the Eastern time zone, meaning that a lot of big events can easily be shown live in the biggest TV market for the Games, the United States.
Plus, Brazilian women.

I'm just glad that there are a lot of Americans who are elated by Chicago losing the Olympic bid. Imagine how many Americans could've been put to work by the construction projects.
I think that many Republicans are going to pay a heavy price for their elation when they realize that they have supporters who are relying on work to be made available for them. It sounds like a "hand-out" but how else do construction workers work? Do they build houses, office buildings and stadiums for themselves?

The demographics don't support that argument. Chicago tends to side with Democrats. The state tends to lean toward Democratic candidates in presidential elections, but most of the districts outside of Chicago are majority-Republican ones. The governorship was locked up by Republicans for years until George Ryan's scandal and the senate was half Republican until Peter F. Fitzgerald's predecessor's scandal (The Republican Party decided to run Alan Keyes against Barack Obama... smooth move guys).
Blagovich's predecessor is going conclude his term soon and I think there is going to be a vicious fight for his seat. They may want to pick someone who was not on camera clapping when Chicago was eliminated.

Yep... The Starline must happen, but ultimately never will. Chicago, like every other US city, doesn't see public transportation as infrastructure, they see public transportation as a boondoggle.
Keep going to Navy Pier you goddamned tourist to the midwest. NOW FIX THIS FUCKING OLYMPIC PROBLEM!!!

How could they host the Olympics? They're just an easy listening band with trumpets. Silly question.
Chicago had trombones too.

If it didn't have its Shakespeare Theater, I'd never recommend Navy Pier to anyone. Everything else there is either mediocre or available elsewhere with less commuting hassle. But the Chicago Shakespeare Theater is absolutely fantastic.

Paraphrasing Bill Maher. Where would you rather have the olympics? In a place with beautiful women with bare breasts or a city known for fat guys and bad pizza?

I really can't argue with the decision either.

I picture it looking something like this. (http://www.livevideo.com/video/B3BB17F5C27F4820BE65C4637BE504A6/slap-fight-.aspx)
