Health care workers in New York are required to get vaccinated against swine flu if they want to keep their jobs, but not all of them are accepting the mandate without a fight.

This is developing.

I am on the side of the state.

I would take my shot. Jobs are hard to come by these days.

It makes sense to me.

Health Care workers are most likely to be exposed with a close second being educators.

Sure, the vaccine hasn't been tested thoroughly but, it wasn't in the 70s either, nor was the polio vaccination.

People are spreading this shit around like crazy. I work in a dirty job and have learned one thing over the years that everyone should employ. don't put your dirty hands on your face.
Use antibacterials occasionaly not religiously.

Don't they already have to get TB and a bunch of other vaccinations? I work in medical sales, and the sales people even now have to provide proof of certain immunizations to get into certain parts of the hospital.

they don't make a vaccine to cure what that will give you.

its kind of bad that they are mandating this... while i understand they want ot protect us, the vaccine was produced so quickly (read: rushed) that many medical professionals wont take it themselves. i know the nurse and doc won't take it because they are not sure on the safety of the vaccine. they wont even provide it to the children. if a client does want the vaccine, they are referred to a medical provider who does give them out. we will be providing the regular flu shot tho.

(edit: for those who dont know, i work in the medical department of a foster care agency)

Hepatitis B Vaccination
MMR immunity or doses of vaccine
TB Test
Varicell immunity or doses of vaccine

That's just the requirements for reps to enter certain areas of the hospital, so I'd think for actual healthcare workers, the requirements would be a bit stricter. It comes with the job.

Yes.

But apparently there are some people that see it with that "And just one more turns into" attitude towards it.

But, the same thing was a concern during the 70s when they rolled it out a bit too quickly too.

im just telling you what the medical professionals think here. as they werent doctors and nurses at that time, i dont think they had much of a say then :o im just telling you, they will not take it themselves. perhaps they know somehting about the production that we dont. i think something would have to be seriously wrong with the vaccine for the med profs, who know how serious h1n1 is, to turn it away.

Maybe it has to do with the fact that the vaccine is a two stage treatment.

i also just thought of something... what happens if you have egg allergies or something similar? the state will take your job away? will religous exceptions be made? this cant really be enforced.

The nursing union is quite strong. No jobs will be lost.

It is likely that they will have to further refine the vaccine before they enforce it.

exactly.. it hasnt been tested enough. if it hasnt gone thru the full vetting that other vaccines go thru, i wont take it. that seems to be the stand that those opposing it are taking (from what i can read in the article) it hasnt been tested enough.

One of the articles I read had exceptions for egg allergy.

But, the same thing was a concern during the 70s when they rolled it out a bit too quickly too.

And eventually the forced vaccination was stopped in the 70s because of a few deaths and a number of cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome were linked to the vaccine.

All valid points, but these are folks who are in daily contact with the elderly, pregnant, and otherwise immuno-compromised for whom the potential mortality of H1N1 is exponentially heightened.

Normally this wouldn't be an issue, but the H1N1 virus developed too late in the year to include in the traditional seasonal flu vaccine. So now the H1N1 vaccine will be ONE extra shot, not a series of shots. That shot will probably be rolled out in a tapered manner to first match risk to the initial limited supply.

Essentially the outcomes for H1N1 is the same as that for the regular influenza.

i will not get a vaccine
that has not been
extensively tested for safety

i read all about those
thalidamide babies....
the moms got a drug that
was inadequately tested
and the results were horrendous

no way i'm gonna risk having
a kid with flippers

I will not be getting the flu shot. I cannot get flu shots. They refuse to manufacture a flu shot without formaldehyde as a preservative. I'm allergic to formaldehyde. This is the only immunization I have ever had a problem with. I'll take the shot only if the state is willing to pay for my hospital stay, because that is what happens when I get the flu shot.

This vaccine has been tested and is approved. However you probably aren't in the risk/priority list anyway.

Kids
Pregnant women
Direct healthcare workers

arent there a few different versions of the vaccine? Ive read there are some that require 2 or 3 doses and they were working on one that would just be a single shot.

There was a big deal when I was in the military about getting the Anthrax vaccine in the 90's. Turned out alright, I get big money if I sell my plasma.
