My problem with what Rachel Maddow did with naming previous winners of the prize is that they had all acted on it and had made significant attempts. Obama has, as of now, made statements. He hasn't really done much to put them into fruition.

By its very definition, the NPP is not a lifetime achievement award.
I hate this thread.
yet, you didn't answer the question. regardless of what the rules might say, this isn't how the award has been handled, i believe.
kinda like how some will argue mvp should go to the literal most valuable player to their franchise when in actuality it goes to the best player the vast majority of the time.

You may believe that, but the history of the prize has gone to... "the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses."
Only a handful of recipients received the prize after they did something along the lines of signing a peace treaty, whereas that just represents peace, technically.
Obama is the standard recipient. There have been prizes given to other for promoting peace in the Middle East. There is no peace there... don't recall anyone getting this riled up over that, and one of them was Arafat!
This is just another kick to some bruised egos because they don't like Obama sitting in the White House. It doesn't matter that this could be used as a positive reinforcement, or inspiration to others.
People just want to boo with a sense of righteousness, whereas all we hear is ignorance.

Nukes have maybe saved orders of magnitude more lives than all prize winners combined?
Want Peace? Give a Nuke the Nobel (http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1929553,00.html)
"As bad as they are, nukes have been instrumental in reversing the long, seemingly inexorable trend in modernity toward deadlier and deadlier conflicts. If the Nobel Committee ever wants to honor the force that has done the most over the past 60 years to end industrial-scale war, its members will award a Peace Prize to the bomb."

I think this leap, "But the global economy is a creation of the nuclear age. Major powers find ways to get along because the cost of armed conflict between them has become unthinkably high." Is not supported.
The cost of war is too high. Because we are economically connected. To say that we are economically connected out of fear of a nuclear war seems to be a stretch.
I am not saying that nukes are not a deterrent (I don't know that they are or not), but I think the biggest factor is economic interdependence, completely unrelated to nuclear weapons.
Most governments can not lie to their citizens long enough to maintain a full scale war. And the ones that can control their citizens, don't want real war. They enjoy cold wars. Saddam never wanted a war, he just enjoyed the climate created by being on the brink.
TheMojoPin
10-14-2009, 09:07 PM
Nuclear weapons have clearly been a deterrent. It's pretty hard to argue that we weren't all heading right into another "global" hot war after WW2 that would have piggybacked on the previous world wars.

"VG has spoken to a number of sources who confirmed the impression that a majority of the Nobel committee, at first, had not decided to give the peace prize to Barack Obama," the newspaper said.
Well, you can't get much more concrete than that.

Did you finish reading the article?
The newspaper quotes Ytterhorn and Five as saying they both supported the committee's final decision.
Ytterhorn, from the right-wing populist Progress Party.
Five, representative of the Conservative Party.
The one who didn't seem to support it? The guy from the Socialist Party!
So apparently, this still favors Obama.

Considering you're usually quick to jump on something that bashes Obama, your offensive move of saying "apparently 3 of 5 of the judges had objections to the choice" is invaild considering in the end they agreed with the choice.
There is always discussion when making the choice, as the article states as well: "Each year, we start with many candidates and many different points of view and agree as the discussions move along. This year was no exception"

Actually, "sources confirmed the impression that a majority of the Nobel committee, at first, had not decided to give the peace prize to Barack Obama."
It doesn't even say that they had objections, just that he wasn't initially everyone's first choice.
So, they had a list of more than 200 nominees and all five judges didn't initially agree that Obama was the best choice.
This hardly seems surprising.
