View Full Version : A question for board members with kids about the H1N1 Vaccine

My kid's schools are giving out the vaccine. I've heard arguments pro and con. A lot of the other parents we know are falling on either side of the fence. The kid's doctors are for it. My wife's wishy-washy. I've never had any kind of flu shot in my life and I've been just fine. I think this Swine Flu hysteria is all hype but I don't know if I'm rolling the dice. I know for a fact that their schools are a petri dish for every kind of illness out there.
I'd like to know what you guys are doing because I like to make all life and death decisions on my children's well-being based on the the thoughts of strangers I've never met who post gay jokes on a satellite radio show fan message board.

People like to point out that the vaccine was rushed through the FDA as a reason not to get it.
Well, they are not well informed.
The H1N1 vaccine uses the same technology and practices that the regular flu vaccine uses to produce the same attenuated virus. This is why the FDA rapidly approved the vaccine.
You can not get the flu from the vaccine, what is being injected is the shell (attenuated) of the virus so your immune system recognizes and can fight it later. It is an immune reaction and if you have a weakened immune system due to stress, a and cold, etc. you may feel sick. Tylenol every 4-6 hours for the first 48 hours and drink plenty of fluids and the reaction is very minimal.

The vaccine isn't available here yet.
That being said, I suppose I would do it.
There have been many kids that have had H1N1. All of them were sick for 4-6 days and were fine afterward.
Could go either way I guess.

We're taking our kids to get the H1N1 vaccine as soon as our pediatrician has it available. We all get the regular flu shot every year and have never had any issues.

If my son finds out there is a shot available he will beg me to get it.
I usually let him pick out a toy at Toy R Us if he takes the shot like a man.
(I let him get one if he doesn't too)

This.
If you are comfortable vaccinating your kids against seasonal flu, mmr, etc... there is no reason to suspect this vaccine is any more risky than that. The manufacturing process is exactly the same with the only variant being a different virus.
If you are against vaccines as a rule, then that is a different discussion.

My only issues with the vaccine are the additives in the vaccine, not the vaccine itself.
My child and wife would get one, as long as there's no thimerosal or squalene in it.
If there's an alternative without additives that is just as potent, why roll the dice?

Really? I wonder why that is? He/she said they weren't recommending it for kids under 3, or is it that they didn't have the vaccine for kids under 3, because it's a different shot. My wife and i got ours at the pediatrician, but Miles (11 months) has to go back because she didn't have the shot for him in the office yet.
I caught a story on H1N1 on Sixty Minutes last weekend that summed up the danger of the virus nicely. As I understand it, the vast majority of people who get exposed to the virus will either feel mildly sick or feel the normal flu like symptoms for a couple of days and be over it. The danger - again, as I understood it - is that the virus leaves you more susceptible to bacterial pneumonia, which the elderly and the young have a harder time fighting off.

its a really tough choice. my wife wants them to get it, so they will be. There is quite a list at our doctors office for it. we are set up for Nov 18th, and thats for my 3 year old. they don't have the shot for my soon to be 1 year old yet. hopefully when my 3 year old goes in for his yearly checkup on Monday they will give it to him then.

they didn't have it and it didn't sound like they were trying to get it. i'm cool with that. i got the flu shot the past two years because my job got us them for free, but i never had one in my life before that.
our kid is also not in day care, and that's why the cdc recommends it, according to the dr steve link.
and like dr steve says, the mist (granted not for kids) is a live virus that can be shed, so if you have that, please think of others and be even more vigilant with washing your hands for (i think) a few days.

I haven't gotten it and I should because of my allergies and allergic asthma, but I don't have insurance so I will see if it will be available somewhere for a reasonable price. Lukas never gets the flu shots not cause he was not at risk but because the vaccines contain egg and he is allergic to that. SO far he never had the flu, despite being in daycare.
He has been home since June and is barely exposed to other kids, his risk is very decreased and I don't worry too much about him getting the shot.

If you do it they'll be fine as, like others have said, this vaccine is really no different from the other flu vaccines.
If you don't do it they'll be fine as well, as most of the swine flu thing is all media hype. Even if they contract it, assuming they are healthy otherwise, they will recover in a few days.

The squalene just promotes an immune reaction, I don't remember hearing about ill effects caused by the chemical. Thimerosal is more benign than eating fish caught off the coast of Maine. The mercury content in a half cc injection contains less mercury than the New Jersey air you breath.

If a vaccine is available with the same potency w/o the additives, why would you take the version with additives?

Just shooting from the hip here, but maybe the risk of spoiling from lack of preservatives is greater than the risk presented by the additives? Again, no real scientific knowledge just an idea.

Not really. The non-additive version is single-shot doses in a pre-filled, airtight syringe. The preservative version is a multi-dose vial. (not meaning you have to get multiple shots for one person, it means single-shots for multiple people)

Yup, and the single dose are more expensive and expire a lot sooner than a multi-dose vial. But the likelihood of having a multidose vial get contaminated is nill with a single dose application.

Wouldn't having to draw from the same vial multiple times increase the likelihood of contamination?

Yes, but there are aseptic techniques that make the occurrence of contamination happen very seldom. Usually it is from someone not swabbing the top with an alcohol swab right before draw or keeping the vial past a certain time period (some are 72 hrs once opened, etc.) and then drawing from it.

My kids are getting the regular flu shot, but not the swine flu one. People are fucking rubes. As of today there have been a total of 141 cases of swine fluy in the entire country. 141! This is just another scam so the doctors and pharmaceutical companies can profit. Of course your doctor is gonna recommend it. They make a few hundred bucks for every shot they give out. Like a car salesman trying to convince you to buy the truecoat.

It's actually better than that, more like 50%. there are various strains of the flu and every year scientists take the most common strains and produce a vaccine that protects against those for the next flu season. It is a game of chance whether you get the flu or not, but I'd rather err on the side of having the vaccine than not. Thirteen years in healthcare and I had not gotton the flu, I stand by the vaccine.

A lot of people/companies this year are capitalizing on the flu hype. Can you blame them? Walgreens gave out 1.2 million flu shots last season and 6 million so far this season. That's gonna be money in my pocket as a shareholder. All they had to do was put up signs and they came.
Is it a scam because of the lack of cases? No, it's a scam because the flu doesnt kill healthy people. It just makes you sick for a few days

3 confirmed cases at my kids school. luckily, he's in pre k, which has their own wing / bathrooms. they also eat their snacks in their classroom. we also know that some of the kids in his class have older siblings that are in the affected grade levels.
that being said, we've decided to have him vaccinated. we opted for the nasal spray, as opposed to the actual shot. with a 4 month old at home, we really dont want to take any chances.
