I liked how he questioned if that ball Alex hit was actually coming down when it hit the camera.

Hamels was on his game tonight. I never blame umps for games but I honestly in my heart believe the umpires cost the Phillies this game.
That 2 run gift call just took Hamels right out of the game and it just snowballed from there. Not saying its excusable but if a pitcher is gonna get beat I prefer he does legitimately.
And Pedro pitched great the other night. 3 runs in 6 innings with 8 k's should be enough to beat the Yankees. He gets no run support.
I always believed it would be Phillies in 7 so until the Yankees prove that theory wrong I wouldnt get too cocky.

I said its not excusable to get rattled, but a call like that changes the momentum and the entire complexion of a game. You hear players talk about it all the time. The way those next two guys went down wouldve meant a guy on 2nd and 3rd and out of the inning without a run. That can bury teams that are trying to get something going.
And to have it happen on a "judgement call", something instant replay is NOT supposed to be used to overturn, is just sickening.

One guy in the Diamond club got offer $8,000 a ticket for 4 tickets that he had paid $1,150 total. Thats $30,000 profit. Youd have to be stupid to pass that up.
Tickets to the games here were more expensive on Stubhub then they were at Yankee Stadium. Amazing.

i think that's precisely the type of play it should be used on (http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090527&content_id=4989756&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb). and you really can't argue based on what the subsequent hitters did, since the pitcher and hitters would have approached things differently with runners on the bases. like if the next batter had hit a more clear cut homer, and yankee fans said it made the judgment call moot, you'd be very right in saying he wouldn't have seen the same pitches with two runners on.

Rooting interest doesnt matter. They dont look at what colors the fan that touches the ball is wearing before making there call. Bottom line is nothing should be allowed past the home run fence. And if it is and the ball hits it, its a double.
Fox cameras shouldnt be exempt.

I agree about the batters but you cant disagree it was a huge momentum changer.
And I dont get the link. The home run on that video was cleary out and the fan wasnt reaching past the home run fence. But its supposed to be just like football. You make a call on the field, and then you check the replay and you have to have conclusive proof before overturning anything. If that ball had hit the top of the camera in the middle where it wouldve been past the fence Id agree. But basing it off of where it hit the camera it was pretty obvious it wasnt conclusive and the umpires were basically just going by what they thought wouldve happened. A point Joe Buck brought up numerous times afterward.

That was a tough loss last night.
They had Pettitte on the ropes and Victorino had one of the worst at-bats possible against a pitcher that had no concept of the strike zone at that point.
Hamels was abysmal...I'm not going to talk about the camera thing, because I couldn't see it from where I was sitting, but that garbage he threw to Pettitte in the 5th was a joke. How do you let him get a hit there?
And then the Phillies bullpen did themselves no favors....three solo home runs in three straight innings took them out of the game.
They obviously have to win tonight. Blanton's more than capable of hanging in, but one of the left-handers has to breakout tonight and do something.
If they win tonight and go 2-2, I think they're still positioned well series wise with Lee in Game 5, and then you take your chances of splitting one on NY, but obviously if they lose tonight, it's probably inevitable at that point.
Even if they lost tonight, you'd think they'd be able to get it back to NY with Lee in Game 5, but there's no chance in hell they'd win two on the road with Pedro and Hamels (or Happ).
The Phillies are pretty much conceding game 4 if they throw Blanton against Sabathia.
They've beaten Sabathia with worse. Myers beat him the playoffs last year.
Blanton's underrated by everyone (including Phillies fans). He goes through stretches where he's awful, but from about June onward, he was the Phils' best pitcher until Lee arrived.

i missed the post-game...what was he saying?
I dont have the exact quote but basically he said he couldnt wait for the season to end and get a fresh start. That he went and did his job and how the season has just been draining. Thats not who I want pitching in the World Series. I want someone whos hyped up to be there and realize this is why you work so hard. It was just a really stupid thing to say after that performance.
And I dont get why some Yankee fans just cant admit it was a bullshit call that went their way. The camera is not part of the stadium. It hangs over the fence, hitting it does not make it a home run. Rule or not a ball should be going over the fence or hit the foul pole to be a homer. They blew the fucking call, just admit it.
I mean Jesus Christ when the umps have blown calls that benefitted the Phillies I laughed and was happy they did, but I wasnt going to sit there and act like they didnt fuck up the call. Case in point was the double play in Game 2 when Howard caught the ball on a skip. The umps called it a double play, I was happy but I can admit they fucked up the call.

The quote was taken out of context, and the reporter who asked the question has gone out of his way to clarify the context of it in an article today.
The question that was asked was if that was his last start of the season, how would he reflect on his season.
He was then asked if he was called on to take the ball in a Game 7, how would he feel about that, and he said he'd love to get that opportunity.
The spin that he doesn't want to pitch anymore this season and he wishes it was over is completely fabricated.
That said, I would not be surprised, if this went to a Game 7, if he didn't get the start.
And, when it was mentioned to him that he could still start a possible Game 7, Hamels said (and this is important), "I really do hope I have that opportunity. ... Having a Game 7 opportunity, that would mean a lot. I hope my teammates believe in me, and want me to be out there for it."
It was in that context -- the frustration of the season, the uncertainty that the World Series will even get to a Game 7 -- that I asked the next question:
"You talked about the possibility of a Game 7 leaving you with a good feeling. If this ended up being your last start, with the way this whole season has gone, what feeling would you be left with?"
And that's when Hamels blurted out, even before I finished the question, "I can't wait for it to end. It's been mentally draining. At year's end, you just can't wait for a fresh start."
He can't wait until this is over because he's had a horrendous season (by his standards, anyway).
That said, nowhere in there is he shying away from getting the ball again.

I watched the interview last night, and I thought they repeated the question on the postgame, and didnt remember hearing him ask if this was his last start.
Its still a stupid thing to say. Even if it was his last start, why would you say you couldnt wait for the season to end? Wouldnt it be smarter to say "I just hope we can go back at them and maybe if Im needed in a spot to help the team win I can contribute"
His whole interview just aggrivated me last night. I know you cant let shit get you down but at least look like it bothers you that you lost control mentally out there.

I'd have been more annoyed if he thought he pitched well and has had a good year, and acted like nothing was wrong.
I thought he lost control mentally last night, too, and I would not be enthusiastic about him getting the ball again, but people have ran with this quote all day today to bury the guy, and it's not exactly a fair portrayal of what happened.
He should be buried for giving up that hit to Pettitte, more than what may or may not have been said and how it was said.

That's why they did it. The home plate ump didn't do it immediately, but they all saw A-Rod pouting about it and staring into his dugout for them to do something about it.
Can't have it both ways. It's not the way baseball is played these days.

Difference is they didn't fuck up the call. They'd discussed it before the game apparently and decided a ball hit off the camera would be a home run.
Where they did fuck up, other than having a camera in the field of play, is in not informing either team of the ground rule decision or I guess even that the camera was there in the first place. I'm not sure if either team knew where it was.
But like I posted earlier today, they have ground rules like there already in place around the league in some of these parks with weird shit that juts out onto the field.
A-Rod's fault...should have ran to the base and let his team get his back.
Him staring into his dugout was why they gave that warning

I think usually when the shift is on, the SS covers the throw from the right side of the diamond, and the third baseman plays about half way on the left side so if the runner turns, you have a shot on a foot race to the bag at third.
Rollins should have taken the throw to second....that's something they didn't prepare correctly for.

Infield defense cost us this game. I think thats whats pissing me off more then anything. Is it feels more like we are giving the games away rather then getting beat.
- Utley shouldve made both defensive plays but definitely the play in the first inning he booted that gift wrapped the first run. His 2nd boot cost us a run too.
- Feliz's fuckup on the stealing 3rd thing was just mind boggling. They shouldnt even try to throw out the runner if they are in the shift.
- Just a question because I heard this but was listening to the game but didnt see it. On the 3rd strike that Damon tipped, did he really tip it or did he miss completely? I really didnt see it and Im curious.
- Lidge...as a pitcher you gotta know where you cover on certain plays. Nobodies on 3rd, you cover 3rd you dumb fuckhead. It doesnt matter if thats the design. Use common sense.
- For some reason Lidge decided to follow Hamels lead of "Lets work on my other pitches instead of using my best pitch" mentality.

FYI It doesnt matter if he touched home plate or not because Posada never tagged him. Basically he wasnt safe or out. And he wouldve tagged it if the ump didnt make the safe sign. If you look when Posada threw to second Milt Thompson was telling him to tag home.

New York Post A-Rod passage of the week: The paper on Saturday wrote that US Weekly found an ex-flame who said Rodriguez had two paintings of himself as a centaur -- man from the waist up, horse from the waist down -- in his bedroom at home. This from the Post on the man who, at the time, was hitless in the World Series: "Rodriguez -- who has been hitting more like My Little Pony than a mighty centaur so far in the World Series -- has had a penchant for public displays of narcissism, such as when he was spotted sunning himself topless in Central Park in 2006.''

there's no doubt he tipped it. the reaction of your catcher is proof of that. the ball was tipped and ended up a foot or so behind him and he just turned to the ump and asked for a new ball.

And there is no luck involved in any of this. No woulda shoulda coulda. Your guys just did not make the plays or got the big hits. Our guys have. I'm not saying this is over yet. This AJ on three days rest is worrying me. Girardi could fuck this thing up royaly. If AJ does not pitch well, who knows if Andy will on three days, then CC on three days. I am pretty worried about the whole thing.

- For some reason Lidge decided to follow Hamels lead of "Lets work on my other pitches instead of using my best pitch" mentality.
i dont understand how i was non-existant after game 1. i made a comment that cliff lee plays tummy sticks with utley, which he does, then went to bed after the game. woke up the next day, lived my life and posted before game 2. not really sure how that makes me non-existant.
Damon fouled the ball off, you guys need to stop grasping at straws and trying to find ways to shift blame off your team simply not getting it done when it matters.
Lidge is in fact a dumbass for not covering 3rd. And he couldnt throw his slider because when Damon made him look foolish by taking 3rd he cant risk throwing a wild pitch and letting the go ahead run score that way.

Not that id feel confident but even if we lose this, we would have AJ and Andy on full rest for six and seven. This way we will be going on short rest the rest of the series.

i just think this whole short rest thing is pretty much garbage anyway, especially this time of year. pitchers used to do this all the time and they used to throw more innings. its not as difficult as everyone makes it out to be, especially if you havent been abused all season which AJ and Andy have not. Plus, AJ has made a few short rest starts in his career and thrown well.

Does anybody know if they're broadcasting the game on the jumbotron at Yankee Stadium again tonight?
The Phils are certainly capable of getting this to seven, but tonight's the big
one.
Lee is pretty unshakable in terms of rattling him, but the offense will be DOA at the beginning of the game tonight.
I can totally see them beating Pettitte off three days rest...they had him on the ropes Saturday and let him off.
The problem would be who would start a game seven for them, but let's see what happens tonight first. They have to answer the bell.

Oh, OK. Since pitchers used to go on short rest (for the most part during the season when it's much warmer) all the time back in, say, 1973, that means that of course they can do it with no problem in the cold in 2009.
It's definitely something that varies dramatically from pitcher to pitcher and needs to be considered. Burnett is a prime example of that since he relies so heavily on precision and if he's off even just a bit he's incredibly hittable. He's not like Sabathia, who has more of an array of pitches to choose from if he's gassed or something's not clicking.

He's very hittable if he doesn't have his precision, period. He can be without it on normal rest, but he's more likely to be without it on shorter rest in the cold weather. It's really not that complicated. It doesn't mean he's a lock to suck, but you definitely need to consider sending him on short rest differently than you would a pitcher like Sabathia. It would be moronic to just assume that anyone can do it regardless of circumstances.

I remember your tummy sticks comment, I also remember a few Phils fans (I wasnt one of them) calling out the Yanks fans for not posting in the thread. Sounds pretty much like the same thing I just saw yesterday.
And Im not grasping at straws. I DIDNT SEE THE PLAY. I was just asking if he tipped it or not. A rational baseball person, whether a fan or not, could give me an answer. Even if they missed the call. Keithy did and that was it. I didnt argue. I was just curious because I hadnt seen it. If he had missed and it bounced off the catchers glove, he couldve said that too and that wouldve been it.
And I agree that he shouldve covered 3rd, but Ruiz has been catching his slider for 2 years and rarely has the ball gone by him. When the games on the line you gotta man up and throw your best shit. When you play scared, you lose.

Mos Def. tonight is a huge game ( just call me Oliver obvious ) for the Phils. If they can win they shift the pressure back to Yanks. Why should they? Their team got the job done. Talking shit is part of being a fan. Granted that some go too far, but when your team does well you talk shit.
Im sure Philly fans in game one were doing the same.

Well, I think all agree that the new york media is idiotic. My favorite new york media moment was when they were destroying the Mets for firing Randolph while in Anaheim, because he had to make the trip with the team. As if Willie Randolph was a baby who could not find his way back to ny after being fired.
