To keep other threads on topic, let's discuss our political advertising differences in this thread. Personally I believe that race has been used greatly (and quite effectively) in our recent political history. Three examples come to me immediately:

1. Jesse Helm's "Hands" ad.

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/KIyewCdXMzk&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/KIyewCdXMzk&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

2. National Security PAC's 1988 "Willie Horton" ad.

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Io9KMSSEZ0Y&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Io9KMSSEZ0Y&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

3. An RNC ad against Harold Ford in 2006.

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/kkiz1_d1GsA&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/kkiz1_d1GsA&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

I say too much use of race, what say you?

I don't see the Harold Ford one as using race as much as it's highlighting some of the areas which would impact conservative/moderate voters.

Pointing out perceived moral lapses ( Playboy party and porn producers ), weakness in defense ( Canada will take care of North Korea ) and taxes ( mentioned a few times ).

My problem with the Harold Ford ad is the context of the bimbo. The use of a white bimbo in a statewide race in Tennessee compounded by the "porn guy" only leads to one conclusion:

1st admendment my ass, this was an outside political campaign targeting someone they didnt like working on the side of reform, the tea party is the new evangelical "moral majority" same shit different name. any party that wants to start running POLITICAL ADS during fucking APRIL (after health reform had passed) is a dangerous entity and needs to be shown for the bullshit artists they really are. i dont like this forum but after witnessing the crap they pulled i'm more than alittle peeved

I understand you don't personally agree with them running the ads in April but how, exactly, does this not relate to a first amendment right?

when you use your rights to strike at others you're abusing the system, this is pretty close to saying just because you have the right to bear arms its ok for you to threaten someone with a gun (and yes those "patriots" did send him death threats too) and say its in the constitution

First of all, no, it isn't. At all.

Secondly, do you understand the first amendment?

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

The basic rationale of "This man is voting for something we disagree with therefore we will make ads that talk about why we don't like him" is absolutely fine, fair and EXACTLY what the first amendment is meant to protect... for exactly this reason.

Is it obnoxious? Absolutely. Is it a cheap political play? Hell yes. Is it absolutely and 100% protected speech? yes it is.

it wasnt so much as 1st admendment issue with me as it being an outside group waging a media campaign against someone they didnt like ON MY TV! there was no grass roots support for the bashing they started dolling out but all the media outlets were in on the take and he didnt want to lower himself to their level, nor should he have to. when you start having a ton of poitcal ads coming on during LOST or whatever sports you like you might understand how dirty and this new gimmick is

Alabama, home of hilarious advertising:

Replace "Tea Party" with "NJEA" and Bart Stupak with "Chris Christie" and "retire" with "telling them to go fuck themselves".

The Republican Party has been brilliant at using the "dog whistle" in their messages. That is, they have images that invoke a certain reaction in people who have certain beliefs, but goes sailing over the heads of those who don't.

That Harold Ford ad Epo showed above is a perfect example: it does look like just an ad attacking Ford as just being a sleazy politician. But the inclusion of that white chick is a sign to some people: Harold Ford loves the white wimmins, and is all for race mixing.

And if you point that out, as shown by other postings here, you get the reaction of "OMG WTF HOW DO YOU SEE ANYTHING RACIST IN THAT UNLESS YOU'RE A RACIST YOURSELF!!!!"

Fucking brilliant.

I heard a really effective political ad today.

It was for New York's refusal to take part in Race to the Top, and it laid it out: The school budget crisis could be solved by taking part in Race to the Top, but the teachers union blocked it.

It explained the situation in clear, concise language.

Why Christie is not doing this, I have no idea - oh wait, he has bad campaign management.

Mike Huckabee has been running his ad on MSNBC. And I also saw it on CNN.
