Dude!

http://abcnews.go.com/Video/playerIndex?id=9106942

this might be the dumbest thing
i have ever heard of

senator mikulski wants to change
the term "mentally retarded" in all
laws and regulations to
"intellectually disabled"

when a car or something is "disabled"
it does not work at all
when something is retarded, it is slow
or developing at a slower rate

would you rather have a
working mind that is slower
than normal

or would you rather have your
intellect disabled?

stupid, intellectually disabled
crone of a senator

The rational: (http://wjz.com/wireapnewsmd/Md.Sen.Mikulski.2.1318239.html)

Mikulski proposed the change to make the government's language consistent with the Centers for Disease Control, World Health Organization and President Barack Obama's Committee on Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities.

Maybe by clarifying the term, we wouldn't have people freaking out when their non-retarded children are classified as "special needs", as the terms would be clearer.

So rather than make these retard parents learn the english language, we make the english language more retarded?

ahem...sorry....

So rather than make these intellectually disabled parents learn the english language, we make the english language more intellectually disabled?

The rule is about consistency. In laws and regulations we should call a heartattack a "myocardial infarction", for consistency of standards. And if the CDC is calling retarded kids "intellectually disabled" then the refer to the condition as that for consistency sakes.

The only reason for any bitching about this would be the asinine complaining of some about "political correctness"...but not having a clue about mental terminology.

your racism clouds your thinking

for me the issue is
using a term that is even
more degrading because
idiots don't know what
words mean

when something is disabled
it does not work

intellectually disabled
is akin to saying
brain dead

Since when does the D in CDC have anything to do with disorders or disabilities?

Take it up with the medical community, not me. I'm talking about consistency.

Only the CDC....you know, part of the Department of Health & Human Services.

Jesus Christ, I've seen political nitwits act contrarian before...but this shit is getting out of control. This is not the end of the fucking world....its a fucking classification for laws & legislation...chill the fuck out.

Mental Retardation was a medical term that is no longer used, similar to calling Bipolar Disorder Manic Depression.

I find Intellectually Disabled to be offensive.

I would prefer the term Challenged or Delayed, which are the terms we use at work (special ed teacher). Disabled means broken. Challenged and Delayed is more accurate, because with time and effort they can learn. At the very least, my kids know what people mean when they call the kids 'retarded'

Calm down epo. There's no need to lash out like that. You should probably talk to somebody about your lack of social inhibitors and antisocial behavior. If you'd rather be called Intellectually Disabled then I will go along with that. I don't see what you're so upset about tho.
