Is Hey the new Hi?

I have seen this for a while now, but wonder if newer versions of words and expressions typically have more or less letters. I always assumed the trend was for less.

Thus I give you "Hey" instead of "Hi" when greeting someone.

Anyone else notice this, or have other examples that prove or disprove it or are simply humorous observations about this subject?

That's how I answer my work cell.

We use IMs a lot at work and some people will IM you with just "Hi" first, then wait for your response before they type the rest of their message, always seems kinda awkward to me.
