View Full Version : X-Mas Presents for the Boys 2009
JustJon
11-20-2009, 09:40 AM
It's that time of year where we worship our respective deities, eat alot, and exchange presents.
We'd like to give the boys gifts, and whenever it gets mentioned, people ask how they can contribute, so if you want to, we are accepting donations.
If you would like to donate to the gifts via paypal, send your money to info@ronfez.net. Please include your board name in the message so we know who you are, since we don't necessarily know everyone's real names in association with board name.
If you would like to donate by check, please PM/IM/e-mail me for my mailing info and to let me know how much you will be donating, so we can keep track of how much we will have to spend on them this year.
If you would like to donate by cash, you can brave the postal system and follow the instructions for paying by check.
If you wish to slide large envelopes full of money under the table, let me know which Italian restaurant to meet you at.
If you would like to help decide the gifts, you may contact me via e-mail/PM/IM as well or catch me in the chat room in the evenings and share your ideas. Please note that members of the Ron and Fez radio program do read the board, so do not post your ideas in the thread. And please don't tell me your ideas are cigars, oreos or other gifts that are obvious, since we figure other people will cover them. All ideas will be taken into consideration, but actual gifts will be decided on multiple factors, including but not limited to coolness factor and finances raised.
Thank you to all who contribute financially or gift ideas.
Due to unfortunate circumstances we were forced to reduce the length we are collecting for, so the final day to contribute is two weeks from today, Friday, December 4. Thanks again.

Hi Jon,
You have a great idea indeed. I would like to know that to which boys you are going to give gifts this Christmas. Do the people get a receipt of what they pay by paypal. Is there any minimum amount for contributing. What if somebody wants to give a product itself instead giving money. I hope you don't mind replying my questions. Thanks in advance.

Paypal does give you a receipt for all money you send. The boys would be Ron, Fez, Dave and Pepper/Chris. Usually we weight it so that more of the donations go to Ron and Fez than the supporting staff (producers/interns), but every dollar donated does go towards the gifts. If you would like to send a "product," you can send it yourself directly to the studio.

Some people just want to show their appreciation for a show they love.

But, but jon needs to use his board to line his pockets and play gift hero once a year. Hell, it's the only reason he's still here bc I'd be willing to bet he not only never added to the fund, but surely "forgot" to spend it all.

as for the "thank you" card .... i probably wouldn't hold my breath on that ... i hear it's just gonna be one person on the card about 50 times or so.

I don't think we've ever given an "eh" gift. Ron talked about The Last Waltz poster months after we gave it to him and the same with the iPod Touch we gave him. We gave ESD Rock Band and same thing.

What about Fez?
Although Fez doesn't bring it up on air often, we've given him high end comic book statues, an original Bob Kane drawing, etc.
Pepper, Pitz, Johnny, etc. have received really nice gift baskets of alcohol to share among the interns, that we usually make ourselves (usually mikeyboy makes them). Last year, Pepper got two bottles of absinthe from us.

i'm gonna go ahead and say that rock band is an "eh" present. i just don't see the point of collecting money from a board, which many members are having economic trouble, to give gifts to millionaires. yeah, we love listening to Ron and Fez, but, come on, they don't need our gifts or money.
having a massive internet thank you card, signed by everyone on the board would be something better than a anything that could be bought. how about we try something not materialistic? I went right up to Ron, during the last live show at Stout's, and told him about the appreciation i have for him and fez, and that the show is one of the reasons why one of my majors is communications. How about we all do something like that for the show, instead of some stupid fucking ipod touch, Rock Band, cock rings, video games, anything from ebay?

sailor all we are trying to do is help provide a solution to this situation.
yes, I agree 11/01 is a little early to start a Christmas donation thread,
but when you stop collecting at 12/04 what other choice do you have.
which brings up something that has been causing a lot of issues on this board lately,
how about providing an explanation of why things have to be done a certain way.
saying nothing or something as vague as "due to circumstances" leads to people losing interest and in many cases getting pissed off.
if the Christmas donations have to stop that early, start the thread on 11/01,
make a statement in it such as, "because we need to know how much money we have to spend, and we want to be able to put some thought behind the gifts, this thread needs to end on 12/04"
thats a little more informative than "due to circumstances" and you might get a better response
another thing that might help with the gift thread is set a monetary goal (which does not have to be disclosed on the board) and provide daily updates as to how well the donations going, ie: "hey everyone, there are only 10 days left to donate and we are only at 60% of our goal"
this will also give the thread a bump everyday, which it something it did not get during the donation period (making sticky doesn't cut it).
the bottom line is everyone who participated with the x-mas gifts just wanted it to go well

saying nothing or something as vague as "due to circumstances" leads to people losing interest and in many cases getting pissed off.
Truly Foster is making the points many of us have over the course of almost a decade now. Jon continually puts out vague excuses on just about every topic or event he takes on. I can easily go back and show tons of examples over the years, from site updates, pool setups, softball game, board events and of course gifts. I'm willing to bet it's his mo at work and at home as well, as he simply puts everything off until the last minute and or always has a reason why it was impossible.
It's beyond old at this point, especially since people have offered to take on many of the roles he continually seems to fuck up or exploit. It would be one thing to come up short and then take on help, it's another to just keep doing it and expect people to trust and stand for it. It's gone on so long now that people simply started their own games, events and Christmas parties bc they KNEW he'd let it fall apart or it'd be a disaster. Quite simply, they learned their lesson.
Most would like the core of the board to be the central figure in these type setups, taking influence from the rest of us when it's something they can help out with. I doubt VERY much Greg wanted to setup his own party outside and cause a rift and split overall, but to be honest, thankfully he did. It's amazing that somehow there is no money left over to put toward events but there was in the past in many different forms. I guess somehow the site makes JUST ENOUGH to cover the fees associated with GoDaddy and everything else EXACTLY! That simply doesn't sit right with me, and shouldn't with the likes of the names on the site as well.

Don't just post it and then let it go unmonitored. Days went by in between without any comments or answers, especially during a time when money is tight for everyone it should have had more attention and maybe some reasonable comments as to why we still should make presents and donate towards it. Be a part of the board and participate, get people motivated!
And as mentioned before, no Thank you all who donated (or thank you all who came) or at least a PM to all who did donate saying how much was collected and what it went towards.

And is it really hard to put keep a paypal account open a little longer even if nobody really gives to it? We used to have a setup for party funds open all year and the money in it was tracked at the top of the site. Come event time, we could use it for whatever we needed.

Katja, don't expect that thank you anytime soon as Jon has clearly shown zero people skills over the years. Perhaps he'll build a lego bot to thank each of us personally...well at least those who went to the party and or donated.

I don't expect a thank you personally, I also did not donate for a gift, I took my 20 and gave them to the kids instead. I would have been disappointed to see that my 20 went towards cigars and booze... so I made the better choice. I am just saying he does owe it to the other people who despite his low efforts did come forward and gave money.

You just scared the shit out of me! My basement is already filling up. Maybe it means he will hit his stride by the age of 12 and be done with it and move on to banging broads.

in a situation where the board is collecting money for x-mas gifts for R&F and staff, the only thank you we should be expecting is that from those who received the gifts, not the one who went and out bought them.
honestly , we should be thanking Jon for doing all the work, even though it fell short of our hopes (notice I didn't say expectations).
there are plenty of people here who not only could, but want to be more involved in things like organizing events and buying gifts, how about giving them a shot.

no, being a mod is a thankless job, my hat's off to those guys who do it
I just think more people can be involved with organizing things, mod-ship is unnecessary

Dec. 25th,
I'm giving 24hrs notice
Fuck, are the stores still open?
Christmas is always on 12/25
start the collection on 11/1 every year
No one really donates until the last week usually, regardless of when we start it. The last show is usually the third week of December, so we end the collection the first week, so we have the second week to make the purchases. We never set a goal because we don't want anyone pressured to give any amount they don't want to.
And Katja, you're right, I usually do but forgot to this year. Thank you to everyone who donated for the gifts.
And I looked online for a picture of the Cohiba giftset. The closest one I could find was:

Next year, why not participate before the gifts are given. We take ideas that people offer. You didn't offer up any gift ideas.

The members of this site who attended the RonFez.net Christmas party and who donated money to the gift fund were incredibly disappointed and felt ripped off.
Were they?
Since you did neither, how about you just let those people speak for themselves?
No one elected you to represent them.
You guys all undermined and torpedoed both efforts, and now you're going to turn around, point, and gloat, "See?! It went badly!"
Well, no shit.
