I saw him at a place called the Meadowbrook in the early 80's. I loved The Animals Melody he used to do. He sounded more like Eric Burden than Eric Burden did.

His Live at The Bottom Line album is a classic. I have seen him numerous times, but the Buster Poindexter stuff sucked.
I always loved to tell my girlfriend: Let's just dance.

I remember in the early days of MTV (pre-Buster Poindexter), they used to show a video of Johansen doing a cover of The Animals' "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place."

I have a very funny story about him. This guy who I used to be friends with used to work in a Barnes and Nobles in Manhattan. One day David Johansen walks in the store, and my friend runs over to him in awe . My friend starts talking to him, saying what a big fan of his music he is, and saying what an honor it is to meet him. David Johansen is very touched and honored until my friend says, "And I thought you were great on 'Tommy the Cat'". Tommy the Cat is a Primus song. Johansen gives my friend a puzzled look and says, "What are you talking about?". My friend says, "Aren't you Tom Waits?". Johansen rudley says, "NO" and walks away. Only then did my friend realize who he was talking to. Funny thing was, my friend was also a huge David Johansen fan.

Talk to ya Later was indeed the Tubes. One in a Million? That was an R&B hit by the very smooth Larry Graham.

I think some of you younger punkers should pray at the altar of David Johansen and the New York Dolls. Check out their albums and appreciate history. They were pre-Ramones and are pioneers in the NY music scene.

I'm a-lookin' for a kiss.

So I was myspace friends with the New York Dolls. A lot of people have profiles on there for thing they like, bands, tv shows, etc (i've got two extra profiles--Blue from Old School and The Stonecutters) so I was just thinking it was a fan.

But right before the Dolls reunion show in London they sent out a bulletin that said, "you've probably heard the rumors and yes they're true. We're playing a runion show. We don't know what will happend after that etc..." and it was signed -David.

So this is really David Johansen running the New York Dolls profile, right? No other messages were sent out until a couple of days ago, right after the passing of Arthur Kane. It was breif, saying "I cannot keep up with the internet anymore. Too much has happened. I am regretfully deleting this account. If anyone needs to contact me further my email address is _____.

And it had his email address. I just thought it was pretty wild.

Spring term is almost over, and I'm really hating my job. My lease on my apartment is amost run out. The tags on my car expire next week. If I'm ever going to do it, this just seems like a good time to kill myself..</center>

I always thought of the Dolls as more glam than punk.
Great, great band, though.

A couple of David Johansen tidbits:

My other band, Frankenstein 3000 (http://www.frankenstein3000.com), recorded a cover of "Babylon" for a New York Dolls Tribute CD coming out soon on Fastlane Records (http://www.fastlanerecords.com) and David Jo was kind enough to lend his voice to it. This was a couple months before the Dolls' reunion was announced. As huge fans, you can imagine how psyched we were when we heard about that. Couldn't believe it when we found out about "Killer" Kane, though. He apparently had the time of his life on the reunion tour.

Also, David's got a show on Sirius. Haven't heard it, but from what I'm told it's great.

Sweet, say Hi to Keith, and tell him Mike still LOVES the Mesa-Boogie Bass Cabs I bought from him. Haven't talked to Mr. R in a while.
