I like science fiction. In the 80's I remember cyber-punk futuristic type movies that had some guy chasing another for a floppy disc, or the Keanu Reeves movie where he had a computer in his brain and the bad guys were trying to get him for the information he had. Some movies like Star Trek show a society with great gadgets that make life easier, things happen quicker... Society in these movies still has all the problems involved with good and bad human nature. So I wonder what it is that would advance society beyond human nature, or if that is even a goal we should have?

Example: computers don't make us better, they just make things easier.

Any goal undertaken "As a society" will fail because it's an impossibility... you and I will never completely agree, we're two distinct people. Human advancement has always been and will always be towards living longer or better. The most precious commodity you can ever buy is time, be it through a computer that automates a menial task, or a CAT scan that saves you from a deadly cancer.

"Advancement" will always be the question. Go to to the moon or study the seas.

Time = Money and in our stupid society this is all that matters.

That's a great point! I wasn't really thinking of a group consciousness thing, but I guess that's what I wrote. I like advancements in technology to make life easier and more efficient. I think I'm still trying to focus my question. The physicists mention type 1 and type 2 civilizations etc. For them, controlling the weather is a step toward type 1. Ultimately a type 3 or 4 has solved the whole mortality problem. Then there is nothing but time to watch grass grow? or planets form and decompose. Going to the conclusion without exploring the stuff on the way isn't that fun though.

deadly cancer.

Thanks for clarifying. I wouldn't want all of those life-affirming cancers being lumped in witht he deadly ones.
