If your party was built on "keeping America safe*" then it isn't in your best interest to capture a figurehead

meh... grasping at straws trying to keep negative attention on GWB...
its always easy to say what the best method would have been 8 years later..
at the time, the people who were best suited for the position decided other wise

If I remember correctly, military personnel were complaining about the mlitary choices concerning Tora Bora and Bin Laden as well.
And I question that Bush and Rumsfeld were the "people who were best suited for the position."

If I remember correctly we pulled all of the special forces out of Afghanistan and staged them for an impending assault into Iraq before there was even a vote on it.

Rumsfeld was one of the worst secretaries that the military had in my lifetime and in ways his micromanagement handicapped the military. Bush was too stupid to make decisions for himself, same as when he was governor. This assesment does not surprise me.

He's the WRONG Kind!
This story has been known for a while now. I saw a 60 Minutes report on this with a member of the Special Forces involved and they went into detail as to what happened. A lot of fuck ups happened chief amongst them a desire all the way up the chain of command that the Afghans the Special Forces were with take the lead in capturing bin laden, presumably for PR reasons. Instead they did everything but let bin Laden escape.

By any metric every single member of the Bush administration was a complete failure. Militarily, socially and financially all of America not only saw zero growth within those 8 years, we all regressed.

It had to be done before history was re-written.
Soon it will be Obama's fault that Bin Laden wasn't captured yet.

Killing or capturing OBL only 3 months after the deed would have been far too soon for GWB's purposes. What good is Batman without the Joker? We needed, and still do need a boogie man to blame. Otherwise it might just seem pointless...

At the time, Rumsfeld expressed concern that a large U.S. troop presence might fuel a backlash and he and some others said the evidence was not conclusive about bin Laden's location.
Now even military actions are PC. Awesome.

What?!
Do you have any idea how important our relations with locals is when it comes to warring in these areas? We can't just go in and piss everyone off or else we'd be even more fucked. We heavily rely on the local people.

I'm sorry, but if you don't understand the importance of intel and cooperation from the locals in the mountains of Afghanistan and Pakistan while we're at war there, then you really have no fucking clue.
To further this point, the general overseeing our actions in Afghanistan now has made his #1 priority FIXING our relations with the locals because we fucked it up so bad. He's THERE and he understands how important it is.
But you're right, we should just go in shooting and killing. It worked so well for the Russians when they went into Afghanistan. It's such an easy place to conquer.

The intel and cooperation to this point has been outstanding. That's why we're getting ready to pull our troops out by X'mas and Bin Laden has been dead for 8 years.

So I guess it's better that this "war" has dragged on for a decade and we are no closer to the end then we were in 2001? Yup, just so that a few goat herders and opium farmers in a desert don't feel offended that a few thousand troops are running around looking for someone not them.
