Politics and how their government actually works? Laws (civil and criminal) taxes etc.......

Religion and the beliefs and rules of the faith they say they follow?

History and current events? Important common knowledge that all citizens should have

I'm going to say politics based on a recent public hearing in NYC on the subject of Hydrofracking. The hippies who showed up to 'tell the man what he needs to hear' were shouting at every political figure who spoke and when they were told to calm down and wait for their turn to speak they started shouting "you can't silence us, we have the freedom of speech".
That's not how it works. You just wait your turn and step up to the mic. Easy as pie. No need to shout at others and then say the government is failing you.

You cannot be misinformed on your own beliefs. I know what your saying (that Christians don't always understand Christianity) but what you choose to believe is gospel.

personally....I have a hard time with the first example. it just doesn't interest me. I have a hard time remembering anything about politics whether I am informed correctly or incorrectly.

I refer to them as Jackpot Babies because its cha ching, all their entitlements are paid out courtesy of the taxpayer

Blame the employers for cheap labor, because in the end we all pay more

Its actually debatable whether or not illegal immigrants hurt or help the economy. Again, they are a cheap labor force that we don't have to provide early life benefits for (schooling, etc).

I swear to Christ, if this thread turns into another one of WF's asinine immigration rants I will set you all on fire.

Seriously, we've gone off on that tangent in way too many other threads. Please do not hijack yet another one.

The amount of people I hear advocating for the death penalty after the tragic events in Washington are what prompted me to post this.

1 the don't seem to know how the death penalty works

2 they don't seem to know that the religion the profess to follow is strictly against it

1.The appeals process alone takes ages, There are rare cases when in fact the person is innocent

In politics in general Most people dont know who their rep in Congress is or who their 2 Senators are. Ask them who the speaker of the house is and they look clueless. Ask them to name just 5 of the 9 justices on the Supreme Court they give you a deer in headlights look

I'd have to say religion; especially for how many people profess this that and anything else because of it. There's very little understanding of the Bible, just understanding told to people or what people invent on their own to justify some situation they're in.

All things being equal, still, I'd say religion. The amount of hypocrisy thrown around with the weight of the "Bible" thrown behind it is incredible. From the death penalty to the commercialization of Jesus and Christianity, it's all a pretty sad departure from the spirit of the book.

edit:
The other thing that pisses me off are when people throw out a quotation of the Bible that they've been told such as an "eye for an eye" to justify the death penalty. It's still murder, and as far as I know the other thousand or so pages of the Bible have been telling you not to murder anyone. That and the real meaning of the quote is more about responding in kind, and not going shithouse crazy and burning down someone's house for not sending you a thank you note.

Most people are inadequately informed on all of those topics. Sadly, we have become a nation that seeks comfort above all else.

Now, most Americans are probably most informed on topics such as: Jennifer Aniston's dating life, sports standings, and CSI.

I think people are more ignorant then misinformed, as well as apathetic to most things going on in the world. The idiots are more interested in the shiny objects on the TV, rather than the cold harsh truth.
