i'm getting some heat on the other thread so i figured i'd explain myself. Clerks is a big reason i want to make films, great story, low budget, witty humor, and just a fantastic movie which proves you don't need a lot of money to be good. All the critics hated Mallrats but that is one of the funniest movies ever, weak on plot and he's not the best at slapstick but a hillarious movie. Chasing Amy is one of my favorite screenplays, but the performance by Ben Affleck is horrendous. He slurs the end of all the best lines and cannot act. A good movie but not great although Jason lee proved he is the money. Dogma was his chance to prove he could do a big budget film and it wasn't spectacular. Carlin as the cardinal, all performances were good (except Ben) and the script was good, overall a very good movie. Jay and Silent Bob... very dissapointing, jason lee didn't capture the greatness of either one of his characters because it wasn't written well, Randal wasn't to great and most of the movie took place in the van. not his best, i would have liked more. i doubt anyone will finish this but i had to defend myself.

thanks to WWFallon
and Gvacnomore for the

I understand what he is saying, while I am a huge Kevin Smith fan (both movies and comics) Clerks has been the best movie he has done so far. I thoroughly enjoyed the others but none of them has matched Clerks yet.:)

Someday I'll think of something funny to use as a sig.

jsbsb wasnt supposed to be good. it was just an end to it all (though i believe there is a clerks cartoon movie in the works). though not well written, it was extremely funny.

I am a HUGE Smith fan and I love all of his movies pretty much equally. I am not a huge fan of Dogma, but it's got Lee and that's good enough for me. I went to his film festival, Vulgarthon, this year and had a blast. I don't really know what my point is, I guess I just wanted to say that I totally dig Kevin and all of his flicks.

i think we all agree that clerks was kick ass...and at least i agree that ben afleck lacks the neccessary acting skills one should be required to have in order to appear in a movie...but one point i disagree with is the anti-dogma vibe im feeling. while smith admits he probably wasnt ready to make the movie when he did, it was still his most intellectually written movie, and probably contained more of smith's voice than any of the others. had lee's cut scenes made it to the final movie, it would have been better, but i still think it rivals clerks.

Thay's exactly why I didn't like it. In my opinion that movie was not ready to be made. I think it's writing is brilliant, but it lacked other neccessary tools to make it to the big screen.

most people never top themselves when theire first effort is a masterpiece.. salinger.. f scott fitzgerald.. its a common thing. i mean how many times can you achieve greatness? i mean the fact that he made clarks is enough for me

You guys are way to harsh on dogma... if anyone was miscasted in that movie it was Salma Hayek.

Way tooooo much dialoge for a girl with an accent as heavy as hers. I couldn't understand half of what she says... and in a movie where there is SOOO MUCH dialoge... struggling to understand one of the main characters is tough.

Other than that the movie was great... at times it got a little too juvenile for my taste. Some Of Jay's Lines could have beem omitted and the "shit demon" was a little much... but overall a great movie.

With JASBSB... I was the first to come out and say it sucked... however, I have changed my opinion since then.

I was looking for something that wasn't going to be there. Jay and Bob are goofy characters... so Smith made a goofy movie with them.

And basiclly poked fun at all his other movies as well... it was suppose to be a "check your brains at the door" type of movie... just alot of fun.

Plus Eliza Dushku, Shannon Elizabeth, and Ali Larter was all I nened to make that movie great

Sunndoggy8 helped me look at Jay and Bob differently with this post:

Hey TomPoo, heres an answer to a question posed to Kevin Smith about the movie that I found on viewaskew...maybe it'll give you a new insight...

What are the many aspects that connect the New Jersey Quadrilogy?" - Aaron Fisher

KS: "The New Jersey Chronicles?" What are the aspects?
Mysterio: Yeah, I think that's what's he's referring to.

KS: There's the obvious stuff. Like there's usually hockey references, JAWS references, STAR WARS references, dick and fart jokes. Primarily dick jokes, there's not a lot of fart jokes in the movie. I think there's two in this movie.
Mysterio: And one big one with Jay in the beginning.

KS: Yeah, yeah. The less obvious, in which isn't to say it's hidden, but they're relationship pictures - all of them. You know CLERKS is about the relationships between guys. MALLRATS is more about the relationships between men and women. CHASING AMY is about that bizarre relationship between two best friends and a girl. DOGMA is about the relationship between man and God. They're kind of unseen relationship. And JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK is about the relationship of two idiots; you know, two innocents or corrupt innocents who are kind profane innocents in a world that doesn't seem to quite understand them and also about the relationship between the audience and Hollywood. If you want to go for something deep on JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK, don't bring your "hip boots" `cause there's not much depth in there, but if you want to look deep for it and try and write a paper on it, it is kind of about the relationship between filmmaker and studio, between audience and studio, between audience and film. You know, because it's about how we relate to movies. I mean the movie is kind of a big valentine to movies, but really it's more of a big valentine to the people that supported our movies.

Gee, only pics of 3 out of 4 of the JSBSB thieves. Go figure.

Keep this in mind. Kev was in his mid-20's when he did Clerks. He worked on it for years and years. Then he has one movie and he spends a fraction of the time for all his followups.

Clerks WAS his best film. But I'd love to see him take on a project that is not situated in the View Askew universe.

Hopefully, he'll get that long-anticipated Fletch project up and running.

As far as Kevin Smith's "masterpiece" goes, it was Dogma.

He was writing Dogma for the longest and it was a complete success...

I myself, am a big time catholic and I found the movie tremendous.

The writing was fantastic, and the acting was great.

I'm sorry guys, but Dogma was the masterpiece... it had the full package... saying it needed more or could have had more is like saying the Bulls would have won more championships than they did if Shaq was on the team... they were a masterpiece of a team because they were what they were..

Dogma shares that characteristic... and if you don't like my comparison.. bite me.
