Here's the thing: Citizen Kane is not overrated, but for the past almost-70 years, everything it's done has been redone over and over and over in hundreds and thousands of movies.

So if you come to it after seeing dozens and dozens of these movies that rip it off, yeah, you're going to wonder what the big fucking deal is. But I will submit that this movie created modern cinema. This movie is to film now what "The Odyssey" is to literature: yeah, try to read that, and it's about some Greek douche who can't get home, but without it, we don't have what we have now.

that's fantastic. No wonder Hearst went apeshit. There is a good documentary out there about the battle over Citizen Kane. Amazing how closely Welles followed the real Hearst story. According to the film, it was the attacks on his girlfriend that really sent him over the top.
