So, I am going to Amsterdam (I think...99% sure) in late March. My life is about to take an interesting turn and if I don't go now, I may never get the chance. I'm not into the red-light whore stuff, just the recreational chemistry one can find in abundance in Amsterdam...

Has anyone been?
Got any suggestions on coffeehouses?
Any, 'can't go wrong' strains?

Give some advice....FEED me, Seymour

If you're going March 21-24 then PM me, I'll be there for Jam in the Dam to see my favorite band and buddies Yonder Mountain String Band along with Umphrey McGhees and Les Claypool.

The Milky Way Hash bar will have everything you need. Don't forget the canals and the tulip tours.

Defintely check out the van gogh museum. Its amazing. I heard the rijksmuesum is great, it was closed when I was there.

As for the coffee houses, I was too stoned to remember any of the names.

We are supposed to go on the 26th, but if the New Mastersounds are playing, I will be there. Those guys are great to see live. Thanks for the tip, we will most likely change our travel plans now.

I second that on Van Gogh museum. we also saw Rijksmuseum, definitely see that, too. I'm envious. i love that city. I was surprised at how small red light, coffeeshop area is. we just roamed around residential areas and had a great time. I think Amsterdam gets pigeonholed into a legal pot, easy prostitution mecca but it is much, much more.

Love Amsterdam. Been there quite a few times. Have you decided where you are staying?
It sounds touristy, but the canal tour helps get a sense of the city layout and history.

420 (De Kuil) coffee shop off the Damracht is a great placeto start coming off the train.

If it's your first time. the Hotel Victoria is 200 yards from the Central Station and on the main street to all connections. Saves from wandering around with luggage, or spending on cab in and out.

This has all been extremely helpful. Thanks so much, it looks like I have a place to stay, know where to score some goodies, I'm trying to go and see New Mastersounds at Jam in the Dam, and my trip seems to be coming together.

Thanks again, everyone.

..the Rijkmuseum . Fantastic modern art. While the Rijk has a big gallery room with the Nightwatch at one end and several other Rembrandts at the other, a large portion of the museum is furniture from 1400 to 1800. And while I'm not into that , where that portionof the museum STARTS is probably teh most beautiful table I've ever seen . Totally covered in Mother or Pearl . If you're looking at teh Nightwatch ( Big ass Rembrandt ) The door to your right opens to where te4 furniture starts, & its right there. But being more of a modernist , I like the Van Gogh better. But also, DON'T skip the Red Light District. It REALLY brings the term "window shopping" to a new level. I was with a group , and we asked one of teh lovely ladies how much, an she said about $25 in US ( This was 91).But it seemed so aboveboard, & weirdly, wholesome . You cant take Tulip bulbs back through customs( though you can have them shipped)

I went to school in Amsterdam for 4 years.

3rd - 6th grade.

Doubt I could be much help, but I figured I'd bring it up because it was a pretty cool shaping of my personality 4 years.

I might go back one day.

Did a backpacking trip in europe 10 years ago...round trip, starting and ending in Amsterdam.

Had a fkn BLAST!

Enjoy the herbal stimulants, as they are in abundance, and great quality....we drank some mushroom tea and took a boat ride through the canals to the van gogh museum...lost my mind there for a few hours.....Heineken brewery is fun, but really just a looooooong walk through commercial.

Do yourself a favor and get yourself to the red light district....its something to see (even if you dont partake.....alhtough i did, and i must say, still one of the hottest chicks i'd been with!)

Take lots of pictures of the architecture and the lamp posts (yes, lamp posts!) Everything there is geared towards art.....wonderful city.

1) In restaurants: "geen kaas" = "no cheese"
2) In the red-light district: see #1
3) Bicyclists have the right of way. Everywhere. One hit me in the shower.
4) Trams have the right of way, too. Basically, everyone has the right of way but you.
5) There's really no such thing as "no cheese". Everything has cheese. Even the cheese has cheese.

I went to Holland in 1992 (when I was 25; a great age to go to Amsterdam). I stayed in Amsterdam a few days. My hotel was in the red light area. I can honestly say it's the most fun I've ever had in Europe.

I always say that part of Amsterdam reminds me of The Doors' Strange Days album cover. During the day it's pretty safe (from what I remember). Just be careful of pick pockets at night.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3608/3486401400_5c3599eb66.jpg

I remember sitting at a cafe with a friend and two Italian guys sat down and chatted with us. It's a very friendly space. People are high (note the mass amount of munchies readily available by street vendors).

The sex shops are great for a hoot. Didn't buy anything (I spent most of my money on paraphernalia).

Have fun but don't get too ripped that you aren't aware of your surroundings.

EDIT: DEFINITELY check out the Anne Frank house. It's an amazing experience!

Amsterdam is a great place during the day, you are right; but I could not get out of there fast enough when the sun went down. Its dangerous and people are just crazy and can't handle all the readily available fun-stuffs. I knew it was going to be questionable when arriving to Central Station the first time and the announcer informed the pasangers to be mindful of, "...pick-pockets, robbers and thieves," Also the train station's cleaning crew was on strike so the whole place looked and smelled like shit. It was hard to chill during the evening because it gets so crowded, you can't relax and enjoy the grass without being surrounded by kids getting loud and all fucked up. Its so overpowering that its hard to manage if there are slimy criminals all over the place. I should have gone in my 20s and not Mid-30s. I will say this though, I do not regret going and the aforementioned grass is just far more potent than I could have ever possibly imagined. We did manage to get out to the nicer parts of the city near the Volderpark which was great, but I wanted to offer up some items for the party-side of town...

With that, I give you my list of the Tops in Amsterdam

Best Coffee-shop: - Greenhouse. They have a huge menu and the current Cannabis Cup winner (Super Lemon Haze) which is tasty and offers a great heady buzz. Even when rolled up, the flavor is amazing. The coffee-shop is clean, the staff is cool and there were a lot of nice people there.

Best Place to Chill and Smoke: - Barney's Uptown. Barney's has a restaurant, a coffee-shop and a bar, called Barney's Uptown. You can't sell weed and alcohol in the same establishment, so Barney's has mastered the one-stop-shop philosophy by having all three right next to and across the street from one another. The uptown serves up stiff drinks and is more than willing to let you come in and enjoy your purchases----which we did. It was our meeting point and within 20 minutes of being in town, I had checked into my hotel (Hotel Multatuli), stopped by Greenhouse for a spot of Super Lemon Haze @ 12.50/gram and made my way to the Uptown for a drink and a joint. My friend had already landed and been at The Uptown for an hour and I could tell before he said anything, that we were in for a long day.

Best Strain of Weed: - Surprisingly, it was not the Super Lemon haze form Greenhouse, but rather the, 'Chocolope' from Grey Area. This is without a doubt, the best of the best. The taste, the smell, the total body high---it was great. Grey Area is a bit too small but we were lucky and had a table. After about 10 minutes we could tell a lot of other people wanted our table. Again, we fell victim to the crowds. Oh well, I felt great so who cares...

Best Bar - The Blarney Stone. The bar tender was so hot and played great music. She also helped us roll a huge joint; which she did to the beat and rhythm of the music. It was really cool and the mixed joint of G-13 Haze, Super Lemon Haze and Chocolope was just too good to be true. We had a few beers and took our new joint to the 4:20 Cafe right at 4:20, to smoke up and go out for more pictures, etc...Kinda cheesy, but still fun. The G-13 by itself was harsher than I thought but still a whopper. I stayed away from pre-rolled but the Buddha-Cheese pre-rolls at The Doors was a real treat.

Overall, a great time, but I had more fun on our train trip to Brugge, Belgium and Dusseldorf, Germany.

Good time Indeed !

Did you go to the Jam in the Dam?

...Missed it by a day...We had a change in the preliminary itinerary. I've seen all those bands although it would have been great to see them in Amsterdam, especially the New Mastersounds.
