View Full Version : Would you confront a bad driver?

On my way in to work, I was at a red light, which turned to green with a left turn arrow.

I was half-way through the intersection when a mini-van rolled right through the red light on his side and made a right-hand turn into my lane. I would have hit him if I didn't see him and slow down.

I had full right of way - I had the signal and the arrow, and he didn't even stop when attempting to make his turn.

He pulled into the same parking lot as my office building, and I was contemplating going up to him to have a friendly (not yelling) but friendly chat about being a safer driver.

I thought better of it, only because I didn't want to create a hostile work situation. I don't know who the driver is/was.

Would you have said anything?

There are many insanely aggressive drivers, I generally ignore them. I hate when I have to slow down in order not to hit someone who is making an unnecessarily aggressive move, but I just deal with it. I don't think a pep-talk would have changed his mind. Listen to Anthony (from O&A) talk about driving for 5 minutes and tell me if any logic could influence him.

I just usually try to run them off the road or get in their way so they miss their exit.

I doubt your 'friendly' talk would have stayed that way for long.

I'm still pissed at you. I will get revenge!

a "dood, what the fuck" or " no need to drive like an asshole" would have sufficed, and i would have left it at that.
just know that you are the better person, and not just in this situation.

No need for that, just breathe and let it go

I used to get really mad and my finger would do a lot of talking in the car, but now that I have a company vehicle, I learned to just let it go....plus living in FL where everybody drives like a maniac makes driving in NC a breeze now.

It's funny how angry people get while driving. My gf is the calmest most patient person, but when she gets behind the wheel she gets infuriated at the littlest things, drops the f bomb, screams racist epithet, etc.

I probably would have given a dirty look to the offending driver but said nothing.

I'm a fan of the 'throw up one hand in disbelief' response myself.

Basically the same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. Lady blew through a red light and would have tee-boned me and my daughter (that's why the child seat should be in the middle) had I not been paying attention. She was in a big hurry and chatting on the phone.

I followed her to the gym parking lot and calmly mentioned that she blew a red light and almost hit me. She asked why I was stalking her and I mentioned that she was far too fat to stalk.

People are so self-absorbed, confronting them isn't going to change anything. I don't recommend confrontation as a rule. She could have busted a cap in my ass.

I usually over react and go out of my way to instigate face to face contact

I only wuss out with starting a verbal war with Black Puerto Rican People on the Cross Bronx GWB and Hot Chicks, because I look at them and who can get mad at a hot chick

I have pulled over once and got out of the car, but thought twice about a fist fight with a 45-50 yr old exec type ( was 22 at the time)...

really wanted to beat him

No in your situation, but my last fistfight, over 10 years ago, was over an asshole driver. i drive slow, I admit it, but this ass was tailgating me on a two lane curvy country road and finally passed me on a double yellow curve in the road and almost was hit head on by a passing car. A minute later at a light he was there and I got out and knocked on his window to mention he almost killed three people and himself. A fuck you from him and it was on

Not worth it, we live in a hostile society with ticking time bombs walking amongst us.

Exactly. But in your scenario where the guy works in your company its even worse. Not that you are likely to be attacked, but that you don't know who he is or what he can do to you, jobwise. He could end up your boss one day! Better to let it go. It sucks and its going to lead to a new breed of people that think they are in a real lofe video game. But as long as you drive as if at any moment some asshole will blindly fly though an intersection, you'll be safe. In this new world, whoever lives, wins.

Fixed it.

Seriously, when its just me I dont even bother getting mad. If my kids in the car I get pissed, but still the most Id do is tell them to learn how to fucking drive if we happen to pull up to a a light next to each other. Im not going to go out of my way to follow someone just to call them an asshole.

Your situation was odd because you work in the same building but at that point you really made the right move. If you had said something to him he maybe wouldnt have realized you work there and thought you had followed him and the situation couldve turned into a panic type physical confrontation quick.

Id never get out of my car to go scream at another driver in their car. They could legitimately shoot you and get away with it using a Bernie Goetz type defense.
