I recently got a Blu Ray player and was wondering if anyone here had favorite movies that really show off the capability of Blu Ray. Not favorite movies that are available, but favorite ones that can really demo what it can do.

I got a Blu-ray for my birthday last month and had the same dilemma as you.
I bought the DisneyNature film "Earth" and was really impressed by the quality of image.

LOST the tv series is something you have to have on bluray, dvds show more than cable and bluray brings out the show even better and you catch the small things that the show puts in every episode so much better
Any Pixar movie. As far as I know the ones that are available now are Wall-E, Up, Ratatouille, Monsters Inc. and Cars. Any one of them will really show off 1080p.
This is a smaller obscure independent film but it is an amazing visual experience: The Fall. A lot of mindblowing visuals and vibrant colors. Sunshine has some amazing space scenes that are amazing looking but most of the movie is a little bland looking.

The Planet Earth series from the BBC. Spectacular. But make sure you get the version narrated by the old guy from Jurassic Park. The other version is narrated by Sigourney Weaver... Oof. I think there's another series called Blue Planet but I'm not positive if that was shot in HD. I think it was but I'm not sure.
Also Band Of Brothers, the new Star Trek...

Planet Earth was shot in HD. I believe Blue Planet was, as well.
and the 'old guy from JP' is Attenborough.

It was his Brother, David (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Attenborough)
Richard is in Jurassic Park

Yeah they remind me of Richard Dryfuss (sp?) and his brother.
As far as the blu-ray, The Dark Knight looks very nice, I'd say anything that was shot in HD looks pretty fantastic. The one annoying thing is the movies shot in a mixed format, so most of the movie looks awsome, but scenes here and there are grainier due to not being shot with an HD cam.

I can't wait for the "Best road to drive my new car on" thread.
I bought a bunch of Blu-Ray on Black Friday and the only one I've watched so far is Goodfellas, but I was blown away....quality is awesome.
Even you folks that don't have a 1080p TV, it's worth it just for the improved sound quality over DVD.

Planet Earth was definitely on my list along with all the Pixar flicks (already have Cars, planning on the others). Didn't know there was a Sigouney Weaver version, but I'll be sure to stay away from it. I know I saw Blue Planet and Planet Earth in a Bluray two pack at one point, I need to see what the price difference is on them.
And James, Earth was recut by Disney from the BBC Planet Earth for American theaters.

Curse of the Golden Flower - a great Chinese movie that has easily the best color I've seen on a bluray.

never heard of it, will definitely check it out.
I've also heard Speed Racer looks beautiful on blu ray. Not much of a movie, but I've been told bluray really makes the colors pop.

I was so tempted to get Kingdom of Heaven for Blu-ray at Target when it was on sale a couple of weeks ago even though that I don't have Blu-ray player.

Older titles I'm generally wary of upgrading to blu, unless they're on sale or they bear the stamp of a director who's cherished visually. For some of them, the differences in video quality between their prior dvd releases are very negligible and don't justify the double dip. I've got about thirty and the one I got the most rewatchability out of was Zodiac, which requires me to readjust my picture settings to accomodate its unique look.
