Stomach Rumbles are called "Borborygmi" and are caused by gas in the intestine moving around as digested food travels through the system.

I once read somewhere that it is a sign of your stomach shrinking also, cuz it is collapsing onto itself from lack of solids in there.

This true?

well, in a less dramatic sense than I think it was relayed to you it's kind of true. When it's time to move food out of the way to put in new food, the intestines will ramp up their activity to make room...old food goes farther down the GI tract, new food goes in the stomach. When the gut starts to hit high gear, you'll hear borborygmi because the gas that's trapped in the intestine makes noise as it moves around. The more intestinal activity, the more noise.

When I was a student a really cool internist called the gas pockets potential farts. That description has stuck with me since.
