every few months or so, one or both of my ears will randomly become very hot and turn red (the top part of the ear). is there a serious medical condition behind this?

Weird variable things happen from time to time in our bodies. For some reason the capillaries in your ears decide to open up and radiate heat. Perhaps the ear is a degree too high and the temperature sensors kick in to cool it off. Who knows? If that's your only symptom, and it's not related to fever, alcohol intake, or changes in hearing, it sounds pretty non-scary.
if it keeps up and especially if it's associated with any other symptoms, see your primary care provider.

thanks! it does seem unrelated to anything major for the most part.

I get the same thing sometimes, and sometimes it is my earlobe. It always seems to coincide with allergies in my case.
