Here's my question Is it possible and how does someone go about thinning down if they are heavily muscled without the muscles all turning to flab?
Say an athlete who is done competing who wants to change their body type.

Simply switching to toning rather than building exercises should do the trick.
More reps at lower weights should keep the muscles firm while decreasing their girth.
Oh, and get off the Testosterone if you're on it (Not you, Mitch...I'm talking in general).

Why would anyone want to lose muscle size? It's so fuckin' hard to get there, I can't see why you would waste all of that time, energy and money just to revert to being a size that you started with. (Thanks, Torker!)

Someone needs to cut down on the number of sets he does at the gym and hire a speech therapist. His heart is in the right place, though.

Mainly because maintenance of it is a pain in the ass and if you ever get a job that requires you actually work 10-12 hours a day then its hard to find 2 hours a day to get in to the gym with a home to take care of, kids, wife, etc.........
With a smaller size you can keep it tone by just doing pushups or pull ups/crunches.
I wish I were smaller but I was grew up with a larger frame after being frail looking most of my childhood and I hate getting asked to move shit all the time, after rotator cuff surgeries its not fun.

I hear you on that. Have the home, wife, kids thing to do myself. Also run my own business and work side jobs for extra money, so there are some weeks that have less available time to get to the gym. Eating a lot of the right foods and taking advantage of the days you are training will allow for that size to be maintained properly. That's a mistake many people make - they cut down on their caloric intake too much and then wonder why they look smaller.
But there's nothing wrong with looking tone if that's what your target is. I just hate throwing in the towel after spending so much time an money on putting a few good pounds on.
