Will they let me take it on as a carry on or are they going to give me a hard time??? One trip is on a small jet, the other on a 767. I'm finding conflicting and out of date information online, anyone actually done it? I'd really rather not check it, even though I have a hard case.

I wouldnt be surprised if they let you take the guitar but confiscate the strings. So dumb.

Also...

Are you flying domestically?
What airline?
If you have a Hard Case, does it have a TSA approved lock?

If you are reading conflicting accounts...Ship the guitar VIA Fedex to wherever you are going, that will be WAY less hassle and worry.

I have read MANY horror stories, and MANY stories of people with no problems at all.

My Dad managed to fly with his bass in a soft gig bag on a tiny plane from NC to Newark and stowed it in the overhead compartment. This is not a common story of success however.

Are you flying out to Burning Man or something? Did they make you check our hippie beads and sundresses too?

Baaaaaaaaaaaaa zing.

If you have doubts...call the airline. They will surely give you a wishy washy answer!

Does the AngryMissy MissAngry Tour 2010 stop by NYC at any time?

They'll let you keep it as a carry-on if you tell them that the guitar case is a front, you just like to keep your M16 close. It's an inside joke but they'll get it.

Acoustic or electric?

Electric, case w/ no TSA lock. Domestic and Delta the first flight then American Airlines then next one.

Maybe I would be better overnighting it.

JerseyRich

So your options now are:

Call the airline and ask.
Get a TSA approved case and check it.
Ship it.

I tried to call the airline earlier today and got passed around to a bunch of idiots who couldn't give me a straight answer. I was told that if I check it I'll have to sign a damage waiver too! WTF. I guess I'm gonna ship it.

Overnight it. Consumerist.com had a feature on a dude whose guitars were busted up bad, to the point where he wrote some catchy songs about it.

Ship it. It will probably be cheaper. They won't let you carry it on.

Side note: you don't have to travel with a TSA approved lock. When I checked my film cameras I was allowed to walk them to the TSA luggage scanner - which is almost always in the terminal - then ask them to hand check them and put the lock on for me while I watched. I was never turned down. TSA doesn't care that you lock the case once they've searched and tagged it.

No offense, but if Stevie Ray couldn't do it I doubt you can either.

The idea of the locks is so that grubby baggage handlers don't take the contents of the case.

and film is a special case where you are allowed to ask for a hand search. everything else has to be x-rayed.

I just did a gig in San Antonio and checked my guitar (with hard case) at the Denver Airport.

I had no problems at all retrieving it from the luggage carousel. That's what a hard case is for. Travel.

Just check it. It'll be fine.

yes. What I mean is that you can use any lock, as long as you accompany the bag to the TSA luggage checkpoint. It doesn't have to be TSA approved.

And you're right, Furie, you can get film hand checked at the xray line, but you have to make sure to tell them that you pushed
it to 800. Sometimes they'll send 100 speed film through the machine.

its partially his fault, too. you are going on tour. pony the fuck up and get a flight case. you shell out all that cash for your gear and you skimp on the very thing that protects it.

i dont get it.

I ended up shipping it.

Then the strings busted and I didn't have extra so I borrowed a Paul Reed Smith guitar.

I will be renting a Paul Reed Smith guitar for my SF trip now.

I will be hoping to also hit lotto to afford one in the future.

An Electrified Fairy Tale)
This is an electrified fairy tale. If you've never heard of an electrified
fairy tale, just picture little fairies with wee tiny electric guitars.
Once upon a time [not long ago] in a land not far from here, there was a place
called Harmony. Everyone in Harmony was happy and this "joie devivre" was
guarded by their invisible patron, the muse Singring. But jealous forces, and
there are always jealous forces in such tales, have conspired to capture the
spirit, imprisoning it in [an instrument of glass, locking it in] a chest with
four keys, and casting the keys to the four corners of the earth so that only
four particularly brave and talented individuals might retrieve them. It is
here that our story begins.
There's a rumor I heard that's going 'round town
Someone's captured Singring, Singring
Come hear the news, come hurry on down
Down to the old town square
The announcer wipes at his eyes, he's trying to hide
See it in his face, tell by his expression
The secret knowledge that claws to escape as he cried
Day of infamy, someone's captured Singring
Day of tragedy, someone's captured Singring
Now what shall we do, what shall we do now?
And if you take a look around, Harmony is dying
Someone trapped the spirit in a glass guitar
And if you listen with your heart, you can hear it crying
Free me from my crystal prison in this glass guitar
There's a rumor I heard that's going around
Someone's saving Singring, Singring
Come hear the summons, hurry on down
Down to the village green
And the spokesman speaks for us all, together we call
Brave adventurers, warriors, and free men
Conquer self and so in the end save us all
Conquer earth and wind, conquer fire and water
Brave adventurers, come and save us all
And if you fail to win the keys, Harmony is dying
Trapped away forever in a glass guitar
And if you listen with your heart, you can hear it crying
Free me from my crystal prison in this glass guitar
Having gathered on the green, the brave adventurers of the land march off in
search of the keys. Their quest leads them first to the river's edge.
Lead me to the water
Pass me my flagon of wine
I said show me to the water
Quick before I change my mind
I go down to the river and bravely the rapids I row
Over the falls to the bottomless pool
and it's down to the bottom I go
Only one has the courage to dive into the river and brave the bottomless pool
in search of the first key.

Let the four winds blow icy breath before me
Storms will never keep me from the glass guitar
Hurricanes may scream, I will never feel it
'Til I find the key that leads me to the glass guitar

Only one has the courage to wander the desert [alone] and brave the eternal
winds in search of the second key

Fire can never burn me
Flames can not catch me - faster am I
Blazes never faze me
Barefoot I walk hot coals for a mile
My sword is tempered, my loins are girded in steel
Make my way to the heart of the forest of flames
And if I do my best and don't stop to rest
I may pass the test and capture the key that opens the chest

Only one has the courage to make his way into the forest of flames and brave
the fire-breathing dragon in search of the third key.

I will climb the face of the highest mountain
Whilst Singring calls crying from the glass guitar
Though the earth may shake let the planet tremble
Steady will I struggle onward to the glass guitar

Only one has the courage to climb to the top of the highest mountain in search
of the fourth key.
Having scaled the mountain and finding no key, the climber begins chopping
madly at the ground with his pickax, causing the mountain to split in two,
revealing the last key.
Now in possession of all four keys, the brave adventurers march triumphantly
into the valley of silence to open the chest, smash the glass guitar, and free
the spirit of Harmony.
