Is it horrible to say that part of me feels like it's very "Galactica"?

This is what I've been waiting for since I was a kid. Can't see the preview on the BB. But I want to see the Argo and Captain Avatar's spring water on screen.

Hope not, that was my first thought.

I actually casted the American version of this -

Avatar would be Donnelly Rhodes or James Morrison
Venture would be James Kyson Lee
Wildstar would be Joseph Gordon Levitt or Chris Evans
Nova would be Sasha Barrese
Starsha: Gweneth Paltrow

This should be great, until the American remake.

Holy shit I'm so psyched for this movie.

The only issue I don't like is the CGI during Yamato's takeoff sequence. I know it's not finished, but looked very SyFy movie of the week.

This should be great, until the American remake.

This movie would be nearly impossible to make in America unless there was some serious re-working of the core material.

The only plausible plot I've come up with so far is that the meteor bombs are missing small land masses like Hawaii, so they build the Argo out of the Arizona with a dramatic water launch.

I think this film will be similar to the animated version, the first series. I doubt they'd stay too much from the source material, although I'm not sure if Japanese films would do such a thing, as so many American films do.

Looking at the trailer, I see some elements from the 2nd and 3rd series, especially one REALLY big plot point from the second one.

(Avatar going down with the ship)

But I thought..

Avatar died in the first series. I don't remember him during the second - Comet Empire - then again, it's been too long, that I don't recall it all.

You're right, I was thinking of...

using the ship as a ramming weapon, which was series 2 or 3.

Producer of Space Battleship Yamato dies after falling off a ship called Yamato

Yoshinobu Nishizaki, the 75-year-old producer of the Space Battleship Yamato animated series, marketed in the United States as Star Blazers, has died. The producer, whose real name was Hirofumi Nishizaki, reportedly fell from the steamship Yamato, which was anchored off the coast of Tokyo's Chichijima Island before its trial voyage. He was wearing a wetsuit, and police believe he was attempting to get off the 485-ton vessel to swim. Nishizaki will be missed. [Mainichi Daily]

The big-budget take on the classic military sci-fi anime series opens in Japanese theaters today—here's a look at the opening salvo.

This clip, which looks like it was taken from a Japanese talk show—hence the talking heads in the upper-right-hand corner—drops us right in the middle of an armed conflict among spacefaring peoples. I guess, anyway, given that my Japanese is a little rusty.

I COULD go to the cinema and watch this movie... but they have the guy from SMAP as Derek Wildstar.

Wildstar was Captain during season two (Comet Empire)
Season 3 (Bolar Wars) they had different actors doing the voice overs. I have some of the episodes on VCR tapes...yes I got them THAT long ago from Sun Coast Video.

I have to admit this looks pretty damn cool. I might torrent it, providing I could find one with English subtitles.

I don't think an americanized version would be that bad. I think just calling it 'Star Blazers' and still use a sunken battleship from WW II (why does it HAVE to be named?) would fit the bill.

Hell if they can do the sequel to Tron, an obscure movies from the 80's (but still totally kick ass back in that day) I am sure this could be soon to follow. I hope anyway.

So I finally watched this.

In a word: IT'S AWFUL.

They didn't just pay homage or rip off BSG, they basically raped it to it's very core.

Interwebs. It's on Youtube in 10 parts.

So here's the absolute blatant ripoffs of BSG:

1) Yuki/Nova is now basically Asian Starbuck. Which I guess is kind of fitting, considering Dualla was a Canadian version of Nova.

2) With enemy fire coming down on Yamato/Galactica, Wildstar/Starbuck goes to rescue his/her love interest, Nova/Apollo, who is in a crippled ship. The fighter crash lands on the deck of Yamato/Galactica just as they warp/jump away from the incoming enemy fire.

3) Captain Okita/Commander Adama makes up a huge lie to give humanity's survivors hope. Adama says Earth exists, Okita says CosmoDNA exists.

(The CosmoDNA lie is one of the things that makes no sense whatever. Okita lies about CosmoDNA on a hunch, and flies the LAST REMAINING SHIP to Iscandar. )

4) Acting Captain Wildstar/Commander Adama gives an order to fire on their own people to save the ship from an incoming threat. (Olympic Carrier, anyone?) Of course, after that, Wildstar/Apollo and Yuki/Starbuck wrestle with their decision to fire on their own people, bringing them closer.

5) Wildstar/Apollo holds Okita/Adama responsible for the death of his brother.

6) And in one of the biggest, all-time, wall-banging most blatant ripoffs I've ever seen:

In the climatic battle scene on Gamilas, Yamato pulls an intra-atmosphere warp to take out the massive enemy defenses, warping out again before hitting the planet's surface. SOUND FAMILIAR?

I'm sure all of this would have been pretty cool if I hadn't seen it before on Battlestar Galactica, and all of it done much, much better.
