Before MTV and music videos, we were stuck with "Midnight Special" and "Don Kirshner's Rock Concert", "American Bandstand" and a cool UHF channel called "U-68".
Any memories of these shows?

I remember Bandstand. It ran until about 10 years ago. There was Soul Train if you were into the R&B (I wasn't)

Anyone remember Kids Incorporated? I wanted to be a part of their group so bad! The drummer was a hottie who later on starred in Saved By The Bell.

Hell, that was enough for me! I didn't get MTV until around '87, so Friday Night Videos was my source until then. But they were the first to show Michael Jackson's Thriller video in its entirety, so they were okay by me. Of course, this was before Michael became a known child molesting white woman...

i don't remember rock on tv, but i remember hip hop on tv. james brown's future shock was really great. i've seen old episodes of that show and i'd say future shock was better than soul train.

I will never forget seeing John Travolta singing on Bandstand! He had a semi-hit single back during the "Kotter" days. The song was called "Let Her In".
I am cursed with a memory like a sponge!

I watched it all of the time, and I remember meeting "Bowser" in the supermarket. Whatever happened to him anyway?

Friday Night Videos was cool before we had MTV.
Where I lived in the Bronx we couldnt get cable for a while because there weren't enough kick backs being given out in order to wire the place.
Alas I was only give FNV and for a short time there was a show on Fox that would show videos.
I rememebr the " Wild Boys " video by Duran Duran. I think it premiered on FNV, rather than MTV.
I also remember FNV being simulcast over the radio, possibly with WNEW being the channel that played it.

Does anyone remember In Concert? It was on Friday nights on ABC. I saw Alice Cooper and The Kinks on that show. They had some great bands. They also televised California Jam which had good bands also. As far as Ed Sullivan goes, I always enjoyed the Russian dancing bears and the guy spinning plates on the sticks.

Rock on TV? How about Hullabaloo.Produced like a Bing Crosby Special, but showcased all the "hip" acts of the day.The up and comers like Sonny and Cher,Gary Lewis and the Playboys,Lovin' Spoonful.
Real rebels.
And then there was"Where the Action Is",hosted by Paul Revere and the Raiders.

Television was really musically challenged in those days.

One of my early Rock on TV memories was seeing Eddie Money perform live on "Kids are People Too". It did zilch for me. However, I remember being extremely impressed by a video clip of the Stones doing "She's So Cold" on Solid Gold. That was actually a life changing moment. Hard to explain why now.

Shockingly, the Stones were scraping the bottom of the barrel by the mid-80s. Those are two different songs.

Nah, this was circa 1980. Something about the way the guitars sounded made me want to dedicate my life to playing music. They were playing in a white room. I only saw it once.
