I want my PC to spit out 5.1 channels constantly.

SPDIF(optical) out. Right now its only putting out L and R, stereo.

I DL'ed aud-X which can make my reciever pick up 5.1(for shows and music), but i want it for my games and stuff to constantly be on

any suggestions?

generic Mumbai helpdesk suggestions:
-do you have the latest driver, if not download and install, if you down uninstall and reinstall
-check the hardware profile that its setup for 5.1
-buy a mac (not that I like macs, just sayin')

Have you tried turning it off and on?

You are using the SPDIF to what kind of receiver? Also, when using SPDIF do you sometimes get 5.1 or never do? Third, what audio chipset do you have in your compy?

No i never got it before the aud-x dl.

I have a yamaha now, that how i can tell its not outputting 5.1 now.

Realtek that cam on my gigabyte board. GA-EP45.....R i believe.

and im updating all the drivers today, but the card said on gigabytes website that it can do 2/5/7.1

The UI for the Audio that cam with the PC is no help what so ever.

youd have to see it.

The UI for the Audio that cam with the PC is no help what so ever. But from Gigabyte's site there are some drivers and utilities that catch my eye.

Let me know if the software and driver upgrade works. I'll search some of the tweaking OCing sites I belong to.

youd have to see it.

I've worked with Gigabyte before and find them to be better than most, I prefer Asus though.

Since you have a good receiver in the Yamaha this should be a no brainer yet you with above tech knowledge is having a problem so this leads me to understand you have tried most of what I'd suggest.

SPDIF is and was ahead of it's time. It is fascinating how much data and how good the sound is from that little optical connection. Your only limited by the receiver and the audio processor. Realtek has gotten better at their onboard audio solutions so much so I would consider using it in place of an expansion card.

The problem though is communication. You have to tell the audio processor that it will no longer be sending signals via wires but will be sending via optical. As you said the UI sucks, if like my DFI board though look at the BIOS first, use common sense in making sure everything is properly selected. Also, make sure your BIOS is up to date. Sometimes manufacturers will put advanced settings in future BIOS flashes, DFI does this a lot. Read the BIOS release notes see if anything stands out.

Realtek's FAQs suck ass, hell question 4 of the FAQ is a Win 98 one. I'd have to know your audio chipset version for more info though.

I'll search some of the OC/tweaking sites I belong to and see what stands out. A quick look at Gigabyte's site though shows a utility and some drivers that pop out to me. Let me know how the update goes and if this fixes your issue.

5.1 SPDIF output = Dolby Digital. You'll need a card/chipset that supports real-time DD encoding, which they started calling Dolby Digital Live.

By default, the SPDIF output is stereo PCM. DVD Playback software can pass-through the DD stream through the SPDIF output as well, but that's usually the only time your PC will output 5.1 unless you have one of the DD Live cards/chipsets.

thats what i started to find. Bummer being that the cable can pass so much info.

But right now with my Aud-X it will send a 5.1 signal to the receiver in media player classic and WMP.

It really all i NEED. but you know.

and im dont think ill spend money on a sound card for this either. bummer

Do you have K-Lite codec pack?

ffdshow and media player classic worked wonders for my 5.1 output as far as I remember.
