Here’s the official synopsis for Treme:

TREME begins in fall 2005, three months after Hurricane Katrina and the massive engineering failure in which flood control failed throughout New Orleans, flooding 80 percent of the city and displacing hundreds of thousands of residents. Fictional events depicted in the series will honor the actual chronology of political, economic and cultural events following the storm.

The drama unfolds with Antoine Batiste, a smooth-talking trombonist who is struggling to make ends meet, earning cash with any gig he can get, including playing in funeral processions for his former neighbors. His ex-wife, LaDonna Batiste-Williams, owns a bar in the Central City neighborhood and splits her time between New Orleans and Baton Rouge, where her children and new husband have relocated. Concerned over the disappearance of her younger brother David, or Daymo, unseen since the storm, LaDonna has turned to a local civil rights attorney, the overburdened and underpaid Toni Bernette, for help. The government’s inconsistent and ineffectual response to the devastation has spurred Bernette’s husband Creighton, a university professor of English literature and an expert on local history, to become an increasingly outspoken critic of the institutional response.

Tremé resident Davis McAlary, a rebellious radio disc jockey, itinerant musician and general gadfly, is both chronicler of and participant in the city’s vibrant and varied musical culture, which simply refuses to be silent, even in the early months after the storm. His occasional partner, popular chef Janette Desautel, hopes to regain momentum for her small, newly re-opened neighborhood restaurant. Elsewhere in the city, displaced Mardi Gras Indian chief Albert Lambreaux returns to find his home destroyed and his tribe, the Guardians of the Flame, scattered, but Lambreaux is determined to rebuild. His son Delmond, an exile in New York playing modern jazz and looking beyond New Orleans for his future, is less sure of his native city’s future, while violinist Annie and her boyfriend Sonny, young street musicians living hand-to-mouth, seem wholly committed to the battered city.

The ensemble cast of TREME includes Wendell Pierce (”The Wire,” HBO’s documentary “When the Levees Broke”) as Antoine Batiste; Khandi Alexander (”CSI: Miami,” HBO’s Emmy®-winning “The Corner”) as LaDonna Batiste-Williams; Clarke Peters (”Damages,” HBO’s “The Wire” and “The Corner”) as Albert Lambreaux; Rob Brown (”Stop-Loss,” “Finding Forrester”) as Delmond Lambreaux; Steve Zahn (”A Perfect Getaway,” “Sunshine Cleaning”) as Davis McAlary; Kim Dickens (HBO’s “Deadwood”) as Janette Desautel; Melissa Leo (”Homicide: Life on the Street”; Oscar® nominee for “Frozen River”) as Toni Bernette; John Goodman (”The Big Lebowski,” “O Brother, Where Art Thou?”) as Creighton Bernette; Michiel Huisman (”The Young Victoria”) as Sonny; and classical violinist Lucia Micarelli as Annie.

I love this show. Can't recommend it enough. The music alone is enough reason but John Goodman is fantastic. It's also great seeing my old favorite Wire actors. Just like everything David Simon does, the writing is just excellent.

I love Lester being a bit of a badass with the thief

Khandi Alexander's fake choppers are distracting and I kinda hated Steve Zahn in the first episode, but I like him infinitly better in the second episode

I'm in New Orleans now for JazzFest. The people down here really believe in it, and are really behind it. (Wendell Pierce was at Trombone Shorty's record release party last week.) The funniest part for me, as an outsider, is everyone closing their festival sets with "you can see us Sunday night on Treme" or "you can see me on episode 5 next week."

It's almost like HBO's release timing was on purpose. :-)

What a sad / disturbing ending, don't want to be a spoiler as some may not have watched yet.

I guess his suicide was caused by the depression over what happened and what was happening in New Orleans. He had such pride in the town he lived, then suddenly it didn't feel like his home. They very things he once lived for, the parades, writing, his students all left him feeling empty. It wasn't over the typical reasons, break up of a marriage, losing a job, finical issues, etc. He seemingly "had it all", a great marriage, a daughter whom he adored, a cool job. Was a strange twist and it will be interesting to see how it plays in the coming episodes.

I was shocked, but more at the beginning of the episode when I thought...

Oh shit. He's gonna off himself. As soon as he kissed his wife and daughter goodbye, I knew it was coming. The rest of the episode had that whole "when is this guy going to die" tension that The Wire always did so well.

I get that his character represents the hopelessness and loss felt after the storm. A deep depression that might not be able to heal quickly.

But it could have healed, with that great family he had. And now he comes off looking like a selfish prick. It's a shame, I really liked his character. I did not like the twist.

But that is what makes it such a great show. Very emotional.

loved the finale, Melissa Leo was great and loved the dynamic between the big chief and his son

"i'll fly away" during the funeral procession killed me, god bless david simon & HBO

the pre-katrina flashback was genius, and it really served the characters well: davis' hubris giving way to panic; the absurd ordeal of ladonna's brother ending with that horrible look of terror on his face as the endless cell kept ringing

This really reminds me of The Wire in this sense: the first time through, you think "Oh, this show is good", but it's not until you watch again that you realize how great it is.

Think the show is great. David Simon is a genius. Love everything he does..loved the Wire..love Treme..Generation Kill was great..and the best show ever Homicide.

I like that Treme is sort of different from the rest of his shows. Even thought from the previews, it looks like Treme Season 2 is going to be more involved with crime. But I love the characters on the Treme and love they way they have the music inter-twined into the show. The characters are just the best. So looking forward to season 2.

Wow, you totally missed the point.

They showed Toni (John Goodman's wife) at a Second Line Funeral, and enjoying it. The whole point was that her original thought was to defy his Will (which called for a second line...) but she finally saw why he wanted it. That ended perfectly.
