This wont be good...
Don Blakeman, an analyst at the USGS in Golden, Colorado, said such a strong quake carried the potential for widespread harm.
"I think we are going to see substantial damage and casualties," he said.

There is a 9,000 strong UN peace keeping force there. Reports are, a large number of them are unaccounted for. Their headquarters was destroyed. This is going to be seriously bad. In addition to the direct damage from the quake, there's a good likelihood that violence will be rampant.

I think because it is so poor and poorly run and had such meager utilities to begin with, this will quickly escalate to a civil war with humanitarian supplies being seized and the populace held under the grip of whoever holds food and water and aid. I will be interested to see what Obama does with this situation.

SMITH: The people of Haiti have been used and abused by their government over the years. They have dealt with unthinkable tragedy day in and day out. And we’re in the middle of a crisis the Western Hemisphere has not seen in my lifetime, and 700 miles east of Miami, hundreds of thousands of desperate human beings need our help, our support, our money, and our love. And they don’t need that.

Pat is the voice of reason again.
I was earlier wondering if this even makes his Top 10, and someone showed me this list :
10) "Over 100 years, I think the gradual erosion of the consensus that’s held our country together is probably more serious than a few bearded terrorists who fly into buildings." –Pat Robertson, on the dangers of judicial activism
9) "Lord, give us righteous judges who will not try to legislate and dominate this society. Take control, Lord! We ask for additional vacancies on the court." –Pat Robertson... See More
8) "Just like what Nazi Germany did to the Jews, so liberal America is now doing to the evangelical Christians. It's no different. It is the same thing. It is happening all over again. It is the Democratic Congress, the liberal-based media and the homosexuals who want to destroy the Christians. Wholesale abuse and discrimination and the worst bigotry directed toward any group in America today. More terrible than anything suffered by any minority in history." –Pat Robertson
7) "I would warn Orlando that you're right in the way of some serious hurricanes, and I don't think I'd be waving those flags in God's face if I were you, This is not a message of hate -- this is a message of redemption. But a condition like this will bring about the destruction of your nation. It'll bring about terrorist bombs; it'll bring earthquakes, tornadoes, and possibly a meteor." –Pat Robertson, on "gay days" at Disneyworld
6) "(T)he feminist agenda is not about equal rights for women. It is about a socialist, anti-family political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians." –Pat Robertson
5) "I know this is painful for the ladies to hear, but if you get married, you have accepted the headship of a man, your husband. Christ is the head of the household and the husband is the head of the wife, and that's the way it is, period." –Pat Robertson
4) "I'd like to say to the good citizens of Dover: If there is a disaster in your area, don't turn to God, you just rejected him from your city. And don't wonder why he hasn't helped you when problems begin, if they begin. I'm not saying they will, but if they do, just remember, you just voted God out of your city. And if that's the case, don't ask for his help because he might not be there." --Pat Robertson, after the city of Dover, Pennsylvania voted to boot the current school board, which instituted an intelligent design policy that led to a federal trial
3) "God considers this land to be his. You read the Bible and he says 'This is my land,' and for any prime minister of Israel who decides he is going to carve it up and give it away, God says, 'No, this is mine.' ... He was dividing God's land. And I would say, 'Woe unto any prime minister of Israel who takes a similar course to appease the E.U., the United Nations, or the United States of America.' God says, 'This land belongs to me. You better leave it alone.'" --Pat Robertson, on why Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon suffered a massive stroke
2) "Maybe we need a very small nuke thrown off on Foggy Bottom to shake things up" –Pat Robertson, on nuking the State Department
1) "You know, I don't know about this doctrine of assassination, but if he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it. It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war ... We have the ability to take him out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability. We don't need another $200 billion war to get rid of one, you know, strong-arm dictator. It's a whole lot easier to have some of the covert operatives do the job and then get it over with." –Pat Robertson, calling for the assassination of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez

From what I took from Pat Robertson in that clip, I did not come to the conclusion that he was condemning the present people of Haiti, he was referring to the past and how luck and fortune has always been against them since their revolution. It seems that his words were taken out of contexts and the woman interviewing him was agreeing with him, and she seemed a woman of color and I doubt if she thought his words were inflaming, that she wouldnt have called him to task or clarification. If you take fractions of anyones spoken word and isolate only certain portions, and spin them as you see fit, you can accuse anyone of vicious hateful dialog. I am not defending Pat Robertson, since to compare the current situation with anything that happened in the past is unfair, but I am saying that we all need to listen to the whole thing and not a sound bite before casting judgement on someone. He is an old man and uses old style words and sentence structure, and people like us do not always hear the full meaning of what is intended. He chose a bad time to bring up their history and obviously people have interpreted his words to mean things that I doubt he intended.

I dunno man ... he's made plenty of similar douchebag statements in the past. It's way harder to believe that he's been taken outta context than it is to believe that Pat Robertson said basically that God did this because the Haitians are a bunch of homosexuals that worship the devil.

Does anyone have any recommendations on where to donate? I was thinking wfp.org, anywhere else?
My friend has worked with Partners In Health (https://donate.pih.org/page/contribute/haiti_earthquake?source=earthquake&subsource=homepage) before and swears by them.

in my mid-sized town they've already set up a half dozen drives, check your local red cross, salvation army or united way
Local drives are great, give cash if you can as that's what will help the situation in Haiti. If that's not in the budget then give clothing or other household goods as that assists the relief agencies in fund raising and local emergencies.

I have not heard a word about damage to the Dominican Republic. Its on the same islad. Did they get damage? Also, a woman where I work has connections with charities and she asked everyone to give any antibiotics, bandaids, medical equip or medicines etc.and she will have it all sent to doctors without borders. I had packs of first aid cream and bandaids and aspirin etc that I gave her. I wonder if Cuba or neighboring islands will take some refugees. If not I bet the bulk of the islands population will end up here.

Yeah, they never sold their souls to the devil.
The thing is, too, where it hit. If a city built to be prepared for an earthquake, like San Francisco or Los Angeles or Tokyo, got hit by this, it would be bad, and there would be major damage, but it wouldn't be the apocalypse you've got in Haiti now.
This earthquake probably couldn't have hit in much worse of a place.

I know that when people are desperate, they do desperate things, and if you have a family to provide for, you will go to unusual lengths to feed your wife and kids. Its being reported that gangs of machette weiding men are rampaging and looting whatever businesses and commercial centers are left, looking for food, water and materials. The country had almost no government anyway, and now it is in chaos. I wonder what will happen with the Dominican Republic right over the border. This thing could turn quite a lot uglier than it is very soon.

A woman where I work has links to charities that are sending people down there. She asked if anyone has first aid supplies, medicines or antibiotics that are expired or no longer needed, they will send them down with the doctors. She said that even if it is expired for up to 5 years that it still can help someone. The doctors will look it over and decide. She does work with doctors without borders. If you can't give money, try that, or see if there are local places that are collecting canned goods or water and if you have stuff sitting in your pantrys, that can help someone in need.

I would make sure to double check what charity you donate to, they mostly need medical help, doctors and emergency personnel to recover people in the rubble and help the injured.
Also food and water, so mainly donate money to a charity that is actually capable of delivering such help to the people.
I would stay away from most celeb owned charities.
There has been plenty of scams and false information been going around how UPS allows shipments of food and clothing up to 50 pounds for free (when in fact their service to haiti is suspended) and also misinformation about American Airlines taking doctors and medical personnel down there for free, most airlines are not able to land there and have no current service until further notice.
I chose Save the Children (http://www.savethechildren.org/emergencies/latin-america-caribbean/haiti/earthquake-10/?WT.ac=hp_fb_haiti&dcsref=http://www.savethechildren.org/), an organization where every 1 dollar donated gets matched by 3 more and 92% go to program services.
So no matter how little you can afford, every dollar helps. Don't forget that most Haitians live on less than a dollar a day.
As far as rebuilding goes, I only hope that investors who planned building before the earthquake will continue with their plans and help rebuilding and strengthening the economy somewhat.

I wonder if the people could all be relocated to the countryside in tent colonies while the city is razed and demolished with heavy equipment trucked in as best as possible from the Dominican Republic side of the island. Then, have planners help the people to put their lives back together and develop a few self sustaining industries like fishing or agriculture and basically reinvent their whole culture.

Listen, if Danny Glover says that it was global warming, then it probably was the cause of it. Danny Glover is very smart when it comes to meteorology. He actually started his career as a weatherman for those who weren't aware. So don't doubt him when he talks about global warning.

I'd like to go for a shit down the throat of every french man woman and child right about now. They colonized the fucking place, left it in an absolute shambles when their baguette eating asses were finally kicked out yet they're accusing the US of being an occupying force. How about Sarkozy gets off the soap box and starts adding to the relief efforts vs. bitching and moaning about the country providing the greatest response.
The quote from the linked article is very telling about the French attitude.....
Alain Joyandet (the French minister in charge of humanitarian relief) admitted he had been involved in a scuffle with a US commander in the airport's control tower over the flight plan for a French evacuation flight.
If you're the bureaucrat in charge of helping the people who've been devastated shouldn't you be more worried about getting aid into the country vs. getting your sniveling citizens out?

I don't doubt the rebuilding part that much, I watched a report where Bill Clinton, as part of an organization had called on many international investors to built up resorts and a tourist industry for the Haitians to rebuild their economy with, and this all long before the earthquake.
After the quake there were reports that he still is calling on all investors to continue with those plans after rescue and clean up procedures were done. Maybe not Vegas style, but there is some truth to the gym chatter he mentions.

The British did it on the cheap by signing treaties with existing leaders, leaving the population with some legacy of governance that prepared them for post-colonialism. That being said, Cote d'Ivoire and Congo (Brazzaville) are actually relatively stable areas of Africa. Haiti was a pariah partly for its slave-rebellion status and partly for the fact that they were the only French-speaking nation in the Western Hemisphere. The success of Haitian communities in Montreal, NY, and Miami just goes to show the potential in first-generation Haitian immigrants let alone the success of Haitian-Americans of my generation that's yet to be seen. So, Haitians are a victim of impossibly bad geography and language *along with* colonialism.

In 1997, former U.S. Defense Secretary William Cohen made the following statement:
Others [terrorists] are engaging even in an eco-type of terrorism whereby they can alter the climate, set off earthquakes, volcanoes remotely through the use of electromagnetic waves… So there are plenty of ingenious minds out there that are at work finding ways in which they can wreak terror upon other nations…It’s real, and that’s the reason why we have to intensify our [counterterrorism] efforts.
Cohen was talking about longitudinal EM wave interferometers (LWI) technology (also known as “Tesla howitzers”). LWI waves can effortlessly pass through the ocean and earth. Experts claim LWI waves can in fact pass through the earth and emerge on the other side. The United States and Russia have possessed this technology for decades.
