There's no thread for music news that doesn't require its own thread. At least that I can find. I figure we can put it here.

Gonna start it out with sad news. Jay Reatard has died at 29.

Found in his home in Memphis earlier today. (http://www.billboard.com/news/jay-reatard-found-dead-in-memphis-home-1004059093.story#/news/jay-reatard-found-dead-in-memphis-home-1004059093.story)

Really sucks. Was just starting to get into the guys work. Love his music.

God I hate blogradio. Brooklyn Vegan is on right now talking up the 'record of the year' which isn't out yet, don't worry we've heard it and it's the record of the year. Then they intro'd a band who is currently broken up because the drummer is accused of rape, which they chuckled about and pointed out the irony that the song was called "women." Played a quick set of thrashy noise stuff, dont point out how the only reason they're playing it is because of Fucked Up, and if it was a band that just said they were a thrash band they'd never get played, but its a Trash Art band or whatever, so its cool cus they wear scarves. Come out of the set making snyde remarks about how the last band they played is really into Jesus. You played them, dipshit.

This doesn't deserve it's own thread, but it's wacky.

I live in Phoenixville PA, which is not a large suburb of Philly, and some local booker who seems to primarily do local bands at VFWs and stuff has booked a 2 day Hardcore Fest, the second day is out doors, BYOB and headlined by Sick of it All, H2O and Earth Crisis.

There are also a bunch of smaller, philly favorites so this is going to be a really volatile mix of people who have no idea how to act, scenester meathead tough guys, people getting blasted in the sun next to a bunch of hard line straight edge kids, neighborhood people who have no idea whats going on, local cops, and who knows what security they're bringing.

This is going to demolish my town. Further, the town has more of a grid layout and is pretty old, so the streets are narrow and congestion just happens instantly. It's basically a 22$ gamble- I can either see Sick of it All within walking distance of my house, or I can see someone get stabbed and a possible riot.

Mikeyboy, get a move on!

The Black Keys FREE show tonight at 9PM at the Classic Car Club at 250 Hudson St in New York. With New York Night Train's Jonathan Toubin warming things up. Not only is it FREE to get in, its an OPEN BAR (for those with ID), but NO guestlist. It's purely first come first served and it is 18 and up. So I would recommend grabbing your friends and getting down there as soon as possible to hold your place in line.

Paul Gray, bassist with the heavy metal band Slipknot, was found dead in a hotel room in Urbandale, Iowa, today. Police do not suspect foul play, the Associated Press is reporting. A hotel employee found the 38-year-old musician in the room. An autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow. Urbandale is a suburb of Des Moines, where most of the band grew up. Slipknot, which formed in 1995, is known for wearing grotesque masks while performing. The band's first album sold more than a million copies.

This is Hardcore this year features Kid Dynamite, Ink & Dagger and Horror Show. Although Horror Show is not playing the same night as the other philly bands. It's a little unreal you could get those bands reuniting on the same bill, and probably why I think its completely sold out.

The Breeders are playing the First Unitarian Church. It's quite literally a church basement. This may be my one chance to hook up with one of the Deal sisters. The funny thing is the Pixies are in town right around there, its kindof like a Hedwig scenerio.

I don't know anything at all about AB beyond what I just read but I'm gonna give him credit for that set being my intro to him. He didn't dig deep on those artists, and I wouldn't have included Mayfield but, Hell is top 10 guy for me and Sonic Reducer was just about the most mind shattering thing for me when I first heard it.

The short answer is that it is cool to see the first time, but he's completely one note and doesn't seem to have a real living interest in that music and that culture.

He's portrayed as this hard edged, tough as leather, old school NYC knuckle head and he does a lot to perpetuate that image. The list is more about that than any kind of legitimacy or affection for that music or that era. At best he's in love with the persona, at worst he's selling you his brand. 96 tears is to remind you that he's old school, been here before all you wet behind the ears kids, remembers what it was like before it even was anything, man. Pusher man is Hey guys, I used to be on heroin, remember? I mean I know I mention it like every 5 minutes, but I'm totally a hard ass and I wish I was still a junkie. And then The Stooges, Richard Hell and Deadboys which are the same three bands he's been using to prop up his image since his first book came out. Maybe, since he was there and likes to remind us, he should pull something a little more obscure out of his ass, not 3 albums I could go buy at best buy right now. Maybe he missed the point by closing his musical universe after about 6 albums which were made in the spirit of only ever being new and daring, by guys who were trying there hardest not to be venerable.

The Anthony Bourdain now is a total simulacrum, a copy with no original. He grew up rich, summered in France, and dropped out of a really good college. He put on this outfit afterwards.

I think Wavves was probably on the list last year when he just had EPs out. I dont dislike any of them, I'm not huge into any of them. I think its coming from a punk rock background I expect distortion to be loud and energetic. So, for instance, I do really enjoy Sleigh Bells. I also like when they're on the prettier side, and have been hearing some of the bands, which always seem to be married couples, that maybe focus a little more on singing.

http://www.gq-magazine.co.uk/entertainment/articles/2010-08/13/gq-music-paul-mcguinness-on-music-piracy/file-sharing-on-spotify-and-piracy

I read this article last week and it's still kindof pissing me off. U2's manager talking about file sharing and the music industry. He says that ISP companies are complicit in music piracy and the only reason they increase broadband is to fuel pirates (a precedent set by rewritable CDs, which only existed so you could copy music). He implies that the ISP should be examining each of our downloads. And music really should be something you rent rather than own. It's also up to ISPs and internet smartypants like Steve Jobs, Danny Google and the Facebook brothers to invent a system which will make people pay for music again. I guess if the music industry did absolutely nothing to create the state their in, they really shouldn't be expected to inovate and problem solve either.

I want to kick this old man down a flight of steps so bad.

I didn't know about the guy from Thursday filling in as singer for the Ink And Dagger reunion headlining This Is Hardcore this year. And wiki describes the reaction as being mixed. I watched the videos and you realize that its been 10 years since the first singer died, people aren't really looking for a new singer so this band can tour and noone notices the difference. They just want someone to stand up there so they can sing along, and this guy is fine for that. Dude should've painted his face for all the shows though.

More for KublaKahns benefit. The Breeders sounded great. The set is pretty well mixed between the first three albums, they only played one song from Mountain Battles and they played Fate to Fatel. They did play 1 Amps song, but no covers. They didn't play a lot of slow stuff, and I was under the impression that they would.

They do more equipment changeouts than any band I've ever seen. Nearly every song someone is switching something. They carry a third guitarist who also switches to keyboards. Kim looked like she was having a blast, but shes definitely nuts.

Thanks for the run-down. I wish they had passed through NYC - can't see them enough. I'm surprised they glossed over Mountain Battles, I really like the album though if I were choosing the set as a fan - I'd probably lean pretty heavily on the first 3 albums as well.

Mountain Battles song ... Bang On? Just a guess.

They played ATP, but I guess thats why they didn't play anything in NYC individually. I'm assuming that the combo of ATP and The Pixies were the only reason they played Philly.

And now that I've looked at the album I realize I was totally mistaken, they played 3 songs from Mountain Battles.

Overglazed, which was the first song they played and the only song Kim played keyboard on.

Bang On, which they did a little handclap thing which sounded really great when everyone clapped along.

We're gonna Rise- which was probably the slowest song they played.

They also played a second Amps song in the encore, Empty Glasses, which I thought was on Title TK.

I really expected them to play Here No More in the encore because I've seen video of it, Kelly might not have been able to sing, her mic was mixed way way down. You also wouldn't guess that the Deal sisters are twins anymore. Aside from Kim being chubby and Kelly being rail thin, Kim looks way younger. They both have big butts though. I was really hoping for London Song, or Off You as another slow song.

What a smart little trick. I was debating on going to see The Blow in November, but the show is at noon on a Tuesday. While I was mulling it they took the show down, and I found myself all disappointed. They relisted the show, and now I feel like I need to buy my ticket right this second, and I'll definately take off work to go see her. Probably not intentional, but it worked.

Pavement at Central Park - The band delivered, though most of what they played came off of Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain - a major bummer for me personally as I think it's their weakest album. The few songs from the earlier albums had enough energy to make them seem like a young-ish band but, SM admitted when the crowd demanded 'Baptist Blacktick' that he is too old to pull off the screaming. There was some sloppy playing, and there was a display of the sort of tom-foolery that probably drove the bad to break-up (don't expect this reunion to last).

It was worth seeing - but the song selection wasn't too hot.

Thee Oh Sees may have shown them up with the 30 mins they were alloted. The y fucking slayed as they usually do.

So here are your nominees for the 2011 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame:

Alice Cooper
Beastie Boys
Bon Jovi
Chic
Neil Diamond
Donovan
Dr. John
J. Geils Band
LL Cool J
Darlene Love
Laura Nyro
Donna Summer
Joe Tex
Tom Waits
Chuck Willis

So who got left out? Well, the most obvious snubbing is Kiss, which I'm of two minds about. I think Kiss sucks ass, that they're a terrible band that unleashed the biggest douche alive, Gene Simmons, on us, but if the point of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is to honor those who changed rock music and made it what it became, I don't see how you leave them out. There had been some thought that T-Rex could make it: I suppose, as kind of the kingpins of glam rock (even more so than Bowie, in a lot of ways), but I'm not so upset about that.

And the term "rock & roll" is getting used ever more loosely. I mean, Neil Diamond? WTF?

I was reading daily swarm and clicked a story, not expecting it to link directly to Hipster Runoff, which is something I could never do willingly. The story was an old one, about how Taco Bell was giving $500 in free food to select touring bands to give them some alternative form of promotion. Now Hipster Runoff douche really objects to the idea that bands he doesn't like would sell out by taking free tacos like this. Then I look down in the comments and it's a bunch of guys with ironic portmanteu names talking about what a fat bitch the girl from Best Coast is (and shes fat in the way that she looks like every girl you see on the street, so not so much fat as not rail thin) and unironically saying how free taco bell means music is dead.

Ironically they were being unironic. We cant keep crossing the beams like this and getting away with it.

Man, The Libertines were overrated as shit.

For some reason they've been playing them a lot on XMU. I think America will always be predisposed to overrating british rock acts, out of some deferance to the British invasion. Hipsters have always existed. If a british act plays rock they automatically get spotted like 10 points. In the 60s they pretended that, by virtue of being remote, the British had somehow invented 50s American rock. We have too low self esteem musically as a country.

I'm gonna go because I think it will be fun and very disorganized. But I already anticipate this being the single most annoying event I ever attend. Ladies and gentlemen, your 2011 class of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame:

Neil Diamond, Alice Cooper, Tom Waits, Dr. John and Darlene Love are the latest inductees to the pantheon of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the organization will announce on Wednesday morning.

Ms. Love, the go-to backup singer in the 1960s who sang on many of Phil Spector’s biggest hits — sometimes as the lead, but not always with credit — had been nominated twice before, but all of the other performers had been nominated for the first time. In addition, Leon Russell is being honored with the award for musical excellence (formerly known as the sidemen award), and nonperformer honors will go to Jac Holzman, who founded Elektra Records, and Art Rupe, who created the Specialty label.

As always, who didn’t get in says as much as who did. A look at the nominees who didn’t make the cut suggests that the Hall of Fame voters played it safe, after some criticism last year when Abba, the epitome of 1970s disco-pop, was admitted in favor of Kiss. This year, on the other hand, the disco-affiliated nominees (Donna Summer, Chic) were shut out, as well as anyone who could have added to the Rock Hall’s limited hip-hop roster (LL Cool J, the Beastie Boys).

Also shut out was Bon Jovi, whose nomination stirred some debate, as well the singer-songwriters Donovan and Laura Nyro, and the R&B singers Joe Tex and Chuck Willis.

Not a particularly inspiring list. I'm as big a Tom Waits fan as anyone (though, like Ronnie B, I'm not so sure about the "bangin' on a pipe" stuff he does) but I don't know if he should be in there or not. But, in the larger sense, I'm not sure what the standard is at this point. I mean, Neil Diamond? Is he even "rock"?

And why let Alice Cooper in but keep KISS out? They/he suck as much as KISS.

And not voting in the Beastie Boys is pretty silly, considering how rock based they were, how important they were to sampling, and how many rock fans they brought to hip hop.

By the same logic, if you're going to have a disco act, Chic could play their instruments and then you have Nile Rodgers as a producer.

Maybe Waits is there as being an influence? Really he's there because theres no rhyme or reason to the HOF, but if it were legit the argument might be for his influence. And I do enjoy his banging on a pipe monster voice stuff.

Really Alice Cooper is the only rock act inducted.

Coachella line up is announced. My initial thought is Kings Of Leon really cant headline something like this. I guess that audience is right in their wheelhouse, but I guess I dont have a huge opinion of them. I also think its wierd to have Kanye and The Strokes double headline the last day. It seems like maybe the Strokes should be the big story, since they'll have an album coming out and I'm sure this year will be remembered as the year of the Strokes triumphant return, but the zeitgeist of Kanye makes it impossible for him to be below someone, at the same time its too far out on a limb to have just Kanye as the headliner.

Other wierdness for me on the list- I didn't know The Kills were still a band. I imagine the Odd Future set will get messy, that doesnt seem like a horror rap crowd to me. OFF and The Aquabats? I guess I know who's going to feel like the ugly girls at the prom. Really, the only reason Aquabats could conceivably be there is because of Yo Gabba Gabba. They have a lot of faith in music fans, that a single hardcore act and a single ska act buried in a three day festival is great booking.

I think its funny when you hear on of the Sirius stations playing something they usually wouldn't play for some ulterior motive. For example, late last week Jake Fogelnest played Ween on XMU. I've never heard Ween on XMU before. Now, he uses it to plug the 'old school' show they do, but I'm sure it had a lot more to do with the story about Gene Ween being so whacked out he couldn't perform last week, and the notion that if Gene Ween dies we have to play Ween, but we want to make it look like we arent just playing Ween because Gene died.

Also, on Faction this morning they play a little Screeching Weasel, which again isn't something they ever play. And they arent playing a song thats really representing the band, they're playing a 'deep track,' but not a great one more like a random selection. Cynical me knows that Screeching Weasel is putting out an album this spring, and they'd look like assholes if all of a sudden they're telling the kids what a big deal that is when they've never really played any of the old catalogue.

This is interesting atleast as an intellectual exercise. I think the biggest obstacle in solving piracy are the content providers getting away from the idea that 'we own the world that you live in, we make the rules that you are breaking' to understanding that there is a symbotic relationship between content provider and customer, it becomes parasitic when the needs of each party go out of balance. And also that the business of entertainment and the art of entertainment are not the same product, piracy is more boycott than it gets credit for.

Thats cool to see, I dont know why they didn't have a limit on the first round of tickets. I wonder if theres any provision that allows them to nullify all of the initial sales and do it all over again with the ticket limits/identity checks. The whole legality of ticket scalping plus the collusion between ticket sellers and ticket scalping websites is some major bullshit. It makes me happy that, aside from baseball games, there is no market for scalping tickets for things I like.

LimeWire Pays RIAA $105 Million, Artists Get Nothing

In the midst of their jury trial, the company behind the defunct LimeWire client and the RIAA settled their dispute out of court. Limewire will pay $105 million to compensate the major music labels for damages suffered. A moment of justice for the music industry, but not necessarily for the artists. The recouped money is destined for reinvestment in new anti-piracy efforts and will not be used to compensate any artists.

It has been a LONG time since I've been to an arena type venue, and it'll be even more before I go back. Back to the Bowery/Terminal 5/Roseland venues for me. As if I ever left!

I've only been to one stadium show. I saw Weezer like three years ago at MSG. They were good and the sound wasn't bad but I enjoy the more intimate venues. I saw Coheed during their Neverender tour at Terminal 5 and it was one of the best concert experiences I've ever had.

Well to be fair, MSG's sound is pretty damn good. This was my first concert at the pru and it was pathetic.

thats not a stadium show, thats an arena. Stadium shows now are generally festivals or shitty DMB concerts. And around here bon jovi and springstein could fill em if they wanted

So perhaps you've heard all the chatter surrounding Erykah Badu and her video collaborations with The Flaming Lips, and how Wayne Coyne probably dropped a lot of acid and posted an unapproved edit of a very nudity and fake blood/semen filled video to the internet?

Well after much searching the one place I was able to watch the video was on xhamster, which I wont link here because it's a porn site. But go to xhamster and search badu and you should see it.

It's getting pulled down from everywhere else which just shows how all these websites just recycle the same links over and over, so once you pull it from vimeo none of the sites have it anymore.

But anyways, it's hard to imagine what she thought the video was going to be. It's slow motion video of the flaming lips doing stupid shit that took 3 minutes each to film, like waving a flag, banging a drum or something else, and then what must have been hours of shooting Erykah Badu's fully naked sister in a tub filled with glitter, fake blood, and fake semen. There's gobs of full frontal, backle, and sidel nudity. There's literally nothing else in the room. What kind of editing magic obscures your sisters squatch in a totally empty room?

A different kind of kick in the eye... (http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2013/03/bauhaus-singerdui-arrest.html)

Is Bela Lugosi on meth?

Peter Murphy, lead singer of 1970s British goth-rock band Bauhaus, was arrested Saturday after he allegedly rear-ended a vehicle in Glendale, injured the driver and then fled to Los Angeles, where he was blocked by an eyewitness until police arrived, officials said.

Inside the L.A. police patrol car where Murphy had been detained, officers reported finding a small plastic bag, possibly of methamphetamine, police said. Murphy denied that the bag belonged to him, but officers said they believed he was trying to discard it in the patrol car.

Murphy was arrested on suspicion of causing injuries while driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, felony hit-and-run and possessing methamphetamine, police said.

In a magazine profile Kim Gordon reveals that her marriage with Thurston Moore ended over Moore's infidelities with a woman he was working on a book with, whom he met when she was dating another band member.

That should actually make it pretty easy for someone who cares to figure out who it is, even though Gordon declines to name the person. She said that they went to couples therapy after Gordon discovered the affair, but that Moore refused to stop seeing the other woman and was leading a 'double life.'
