thats exactly how I feel about it too, disjointed. some tracks have the same exact flavor of the first album and some tracks have this slower, somber feel to them. nothing meshed well. i've listened twice like you but i might not give it a 3rd listen all the way through. i was so excited for this album too.

New Fear Factory "Mechanize"... drop date is 2/9, but it's already out there.
Good album. Def not their best. But worth a listen if anything.
Just a note for FF fans... the album is without Christian and Raymond. And well, you can tell by the sound of it.

It's really percussive with lots of the small toys clickers/drums/etc that Stephen has been collecting. It's pretty good. I initially enjoy it more than Distortion.

Are you familiar with Sleep? I am a massive fan of Sleep and am too lazy to find out how High on Fire compares to them...
So far 2010 has only produced one LP I'm really feelling and that's the new Pantha Du Prince.
Several 7" singles but I won't bother you with that.

Absolutely that is Thirlwell of Foetus. He has three self-released albums under the Manorexia name. Ambient is the best way to describe it I guess. As far as instrumental music goes, it's some of the most haunting shit I've heard. It's definitely not something to throw on at a party, but I personally think he does an amazing job evoking emotions just by combining unconventional sounds and instruments. It's very experimental stuff and nothing like any other work he puts out. Manorexia albums are probably my favorite to throw on when I'm in a very internal mood, perfect music to lose yourself in deep thought too. I'm a pretty lousy music critic, and Thirlwell has been my favorite musician since I was a teenager, so that all that with a grain of salt.

And calling Mike Patton a one hit wonder is like calling Beethoven a no hit wonder, there are different ways of measuring success.

I think he likes to take his time on some projects. I'd imagine that hiring a 40 piece orchestra wasn't cheap, so he might have needed some time to raise funds (possibly a motive for agreeing to do a Faith No More reunion). I remember listening to Peeping Tom demos like five years before the album came out.

You can stream the whole album on NPR right now, in case you're like me and have a thing about actually needing to own a physical copy of an album you pay for, but want to give a listen.
On their hype- I dont know that it will come back to bite them. I really dont think they're going to do more than one album. Judging from SXSW they're not going to be a live powerhouse, and the whole electroclash thing and repetative lyrics will probably be way out by the time they would have something new to put out anyway. I think its more likely that the guy will spin the Sleigh Bells stuff into a new project.
On the bright side I think blogs are on their way out anyway. They're merging into the mainstream culture, and most of the time I hear anyone mention a music blog its to talk about how retarded it is.
I think I just heard what would be the title track, and its good. Although Infinity Guitars seems to be on the album unchanged, and thats not really my favorite. I'm hoping if they redo anything they put out previously its AB Machines. Ring Ring would've been the song I put on an album unchanged.
I realize I'm critisizing an album while I'm listening to it for the first time, as Ben Weasel says "We become what we hate."

Well yeah, but that would be a little on the nose to say. I have no problem with someone doing a wholesale sample. They're not trying to get away with anything, and they're making a new song. What the Cumias of the world need to understand is that collage, or sampling, homage, found art, pastiche or whatever has been a part of creativity forever.
Anthony will have no problem bitching about a sample where the original artist is actually getting paid but never bring up a sound alike which is designed to specifically usurp the artists wishes/cheat the out of money, or a parody, or a commercial where artistic merit is straight up traded for cash.

We shouldn't have anything to worry about with Born Free, as I feel pretty confident in saying Cumia has never heard Suicide - he wasn't hip enough to be there and if he did end up a Suicide show he'd surely just write them off as gay.

It might be ironic, but it might also just be silly or postmodern. All of a sudden they're putting albums out like crazy, and this is a band that used to not really name albums. Maybe they dont think album titles matter that much. Rivers Cuomo has always insisted he's a different sort of person, so maybe he just wants to referance things he really likes. I never really liked Weezer, but I would give them the benefit of the doubt, because they've been sticking with it for so long, that maybe they're genuine about calling an album Hurley.

This record was recorded within a month which is unheard of for a Weezer album. I think most fans of rock would agree that their first album and pinkerton are incredible records. This record has some of the rawness of Pinkerton, but also has some of the hooks of the blue album. But it doesn't have any guitar solos which have been part of some of the best Weezer songs.

I think you're just not making the concept basic enough to understand how it's ironic. You're laughing at them because they're bad, if we're being unironic we only laugh at things we enjoy. You enjoy not enjoying them, your laughter is mirthful as well as judgemental. If I had never heard of ICP I wouldn't know that you weren't sincerely trying to pass on their message instead of holding it up to ridicule, because I need the the right context. The logical conclusion is that you draw attention to what you think has value, thats what I meant by promotion. You would never tell someone "Oh my god, you have to eat at this place, the food is terrible and the waiters are awful," because irony doesn't make sense there, you cant enjoy bad food. You are enjoying bad culture "Oh my god you need to consume this, its so shitty." Thats completely ironic.

Jenny and Johnny- I'm Having Fun Now
Jenny Lewis makes another really good record about California. It makes a little more sense as a Rilo Kiley album than Under The Black Light even, and actually reminds me of surfy older Rilo Kiley. Themes of the album seem to be snakes and knives. I like John Rice on this more than I have in the past. Seeing them next week with Superchunk, I think it's going to be very fun.

I can't imagine even giving ICP any thought, good or bad, in the year 2010.

I'm in love with this. I've been a fan of everything they've ever recorded and it could be this has come out at the perfect time at this point in my life, but God it's great.

The title song off of Jimmy Eat World's Invented is the best song of the year. So, so, so, so fucking good.

I agree on this one. Much better than their last offering, even if that was pretty darn good. I've seen these guys a few times and every show was top notch. Their harmonies and soundscapes are trance inducing.

The best song off the last record was "Dizzy" in my opinion. That song, to me, is a classic by them.
But yeah, Invented is just top notch.

Here's what's potentially making my top ten list right now. In no order:
Make Do And Mend: End Measured Mile
Jimmy Eat World: Invented
The Gamits: Parts
The Gaslight Anthem: American Slang
Arrivals: Volatile Molotov
The Hold Steady: Heaven Is Whenver
Alkaline Trio: This Addiction
Coheed and Cambria: Year of the Black Rainbow
Street Dogs: Street Dogs
Bad Books: Bad Books
Honorable Mention:
The Slackers: The Great Rocksteady Swindle
Sick of It All: Based On A True Story
The National: High Violet
The Menzingers: Chamberlain Awaits
Crime In Stereo: I Was Trying to Describe You to Someone
The Bouncing Souls: Ghosts on the Boardwalk
Weezer: Hurley (I happen to think Unspoken is an amzing song
Mixtapes: Thought About Growing Up (only 4 songs, all so so so good)
Bad Religion: Dissent of Man (never could get into them before this album)
And a three way toss up for the bottom of the honorable mention goes to:
Motion City Soundtrack: My Dinosaur Life
My Chemical Romance: Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys (kind of a pretentious title)
River City Extension: The Unmistakable Man

So without sitting down and trying to remember what came out this year but stuff I would say has to be included:
Sleigh Bells- Treats
Marnie Stern s/t
TENNIS- whatever EPs they put out
Girl Talk- All Day
TENNIS is in there because theres no sense of irony to those songs, which is practically revolutionary right now.
And I dont even freak out on Girl Talk like people do, but its really impressive work, its putting together music I enjoy from parts I absolutely detest, and to get the full effect you need the whole thing. It argues in favor of the album.

My list is slowly being unveiled at http://scotthudson.blogspot.com
If I had to choose now, here's my top 10, although I haven't listened to Kings of Leon's new album yet:
10. Filter - The Trouble With Angels - This new CD sounds a hell of a lot like Amalgamut, and that's a really fucking good thing. I didn't think they had it in them anymore, though I didn't think they had anything left.
9. Sufjan Stevens - The Age of Adz - Bonus points for a drastic, inexplicable change in musical direction that actually works. I never saw Sufjan Stevens making a CD that sounds like Animal Collective-lite.
8. Circa Survive - Blue Sky Noise - This was my first experience with Circa Survive. After listening to their prior work it will likely be my only experience with Circa Survive. But this is a deep album with some surprisingly awesome songs.
7. The Black Keys - Brothers - This is a Black Keys album. That is good enough for me.
6. Kanye West - My Beautiful, Dark, Twisted Fantasy - I'm not in as love with this as the critics are. The best moments in this CD belong not to Kanye but to his guest stars. But that is not to say this CD isn't totally awesome and contains Kanye's best rapping to date. His beats are always the best in the industry.
5. Big Boi - Sir Lucious Left Foot - This CD is both a throwback and experimental but nearly everything Big Boi tries succeeds. I personally think this is clearly better than Kanye's new release, but that's just me.
4. Arcade Fire - The Suburbs - I didn't like Neon Bible. At all. I loved No Cars Go and The Lighthouse and the Well. I hated everything else. The Suburbs doesn't sound anything like Neon Bible or Funeral for that matter. There's a lot of 80s-like synth I never thought I would hear from the Arcade Fire. But it works. Nearly the whole CD works. By the time I get to We Had To Wait I'm sorry that the Album will end soon, and for a long album like this, that is a very good thing.
3. Jonsi - Go - This doesn't sound much different from Sigur Ros. Just shortened up tracks that sound a bit more mainstream. He even sings much of the album in English, and other imaginary languages aren't bothered with. So Go can be best described as condensed versions of Sigur Ros's best songs, and it does sound as awesome as that sounds.
2. The National - High Violet - I didn't hear this until late in the year. This was my first, and certainly not last, experience with the National. They are one of those few bands that be intense without upping tempo or even seeming like they are trying. The entire last half of High Violet is incredible, and the first half only slightly less so. They are the kind of good I can't describe and can only experience. And in my opinion after quickly consuming their entire back catalog, never better.
1. The Roots - How I Got Over - This is an ALBUM. In both sound and themes it takes you on a journey. It starts out downtrodden and pessimistic and then starting with the title track reverses course and discards the previous sentiment for a more uplifting, optimistic tone. It acknowledges how shitty the world can be and then discounts it because excuses are worth nothing and you can overcome anyway. Each song flows into the next smoothly and effortlessly. The Roots have finally taken the expert musicianship apparent at any of their shows and used it to make a classic album, not just a classic collection of songs. Every one of their collaborations from the more typical to the odd ones with Joanna Newsome and the Dirty Projectors work flawlessly. They only weakness is that it's last 2 songs, though good, seem tacked on and certainly don't fit with anything before it. But in a year with a shitload of really good music, How I Got Over is my favorite by far.

I have a lot of music to listen to. Which is good, as I'm getting sick of the stuff I've been listening to.

Was there a major switch over the last couple of years of everyone's "major" rock album moving from Sgt Pepper to Pet Sounds? Is that the reason everything has the beach sound now?

I've always thought that Sgt. Peppers was a bit of an embarrassment, save for 2-3 songs.
I think the beach sound has to do with NYC pumping out the Strokes about 10 years ago - those 'saviors of rock' were one note and I think it turned the taste-makers away from NYC for a while. Slowly San Francisco became the hub for new sounds and those folks have been on that beach sound for awhile.
Just one man's theory.

I saw them play with Coheed in Philli. They were pretty good, though Anthony Greene's vocals annoyed me after awhile. But a few of these are pretty great (namely Get Out and I Felt Free.

After driving a fellow classmate to my EMT class today she put on her ipod and went through a bunch of hip hop songs. It made me listen to this album today. I'm glad I gave it a listen.

I think Pet Sounds started resurging with the increased interest in home production. But I dont think that has anything to do with the lo fi beachy sound going on right now. Consider, thats just whats getting played on the radio or payed attention to by media. One beachy band hits (say Wavves) and then theres a scramble to play more of that sound, so you play or write about all the beachy bands, then new bands try and do that sound or producers push that sound and it seems like its all the rage, but its somewhat artificial. Look at the calender for your local venues that have indie bands, how many of them have this sound?
Then think back, why did Wavves get picked up on? Because they were running around grabbing all the lo fi bands garagey bands like Vivian Girls. And the center of hipness has been Brooklyn for long enough that its parody, and people are sick of it, and now its getting cooler to live in Silver Lake CA. Its just wierd little ebbs and flows that determine this stuff, I dont think its historically motivated.

This is jumping the gun, but I'm not making a 2011 thread for an album I haven't heard yet. But damned if I dont really like the first single of PJ Harvey's next album.

The songs I've heard Manchester Orchestra demo for their upcoming release sound incredible.
