View Full Version : Protected music files from ripped CD's?

I'm fixing a buddies comp, and he said I could snag his music files. They were all ripped from CD's, but I don't know what program he used. When I put them on my comp last night, and tried to play them, it wouldn't work.
With Windows Media Player, it took me straight to the web, and said I needed to purchase a license for each song. It said that they were copied "protected", and I had exceeded the allowable number of computers for the files. VLC Media Player showed the status bar moving, but there was no sound.
I've never experienced this before. Does this have something to do with whatever program he used to rip the CD's?

These are all CD's recorded by monks that want the songs shared with the world. That's my story, and I'm sticking with it.

If he can get them to play on another computer, tunebite makes an analog copy, that sounds quite good. Even if you format a computer, a lot of programs treat that computer as an entirely different machine.

Yeah, they still work on his comp. I just looked up tunebite. It has my favorite quality. IT'S FREE! Thanks, Budday!!!

I think older versions of Windows Media Player would rip CD's as protected WMA files unless you turned it off. That's probably what happened.

And this is the kind of DRM bullshit that leads people to say "Ah, fuck it, I'll just download this shit."

Same boat here friend. I reformatted my computer, and all my legit rips from CD's are now non-accessible. What pisses me off is that these were all paid for, and now I am reduced to downloading to try to replace what I can.
I am trying this suggestion, more news to come....

Tried a few things. I am still stuck. All the files are listed in green font, and the WMP keeps giving me errors and wont play.
Fuck.

WMA seeks out copyright info which is stored separately from your music files in a hidden folder. So when you reformat, try to copy from one computer to another, etc. you loose that copyright cert and the file will not play.
Tunebite will copy the WMA file to an unprotected MP3 and FreeRip (http://download.cnet.com/FreeRip-MP3/3000-2140_4-10050140.html?tag=mncol;pop) does a good job as well but is a little speedier and cleaner.

I'm going to have to try FreeRip. Tunebit is no longer free. It only converted the first minute for free.:wallbash:

No shit on Tunbite? Here it is still listed as being free, (http://download.cnet.com/Tunebite/3000-2140_4-10783040.html?tag=mncol) and Cnet is good about being up to date. Some aps though if you download them from one sourc they are not free but another source they are. Use Cnet as your guide.

I get as much as I can from Cnet. I think there might be older versions that are free, but I'm not sure if they're still on there.

They guy ended up paying $40 for TuneBite. It's working fine, but damn... It's taken about 6 days to convert all his music. But I think he had at least 20 gigs of music to start with.

Napster songs only last as long as you keep paying Napster the monthly fee.
