I live in a county of approx. 1/2 a million residents. We always had the local TV news show in the morning and evening. It was a poorly produced affair, with bumbling cameraman, mics dropping out, cameras panning unexpectedly away from the perplexed newscasters, mixed up footage, lights getting turned off then on during the broadcast, bad grammar, and my favorite was the anchor who would whip hes head from side to side for emphasis without realizing it. Well they stopped broadcasting a few years ago, and our news by default now comes from KTVU in Oakland, about 100 miles away.

While watching the storm footage this morning, I got to remembering that despite the "keystone kops" feel of the old local news, it was nice to have during heavy storms like this as there is far too much going on for bay area news to cover.

Have some of you other rural Dot Netandos lost your bumbling local news to the economy?

You've just described the CBC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_Broadcasting_Corporation) which is the state run/tax payer funded network for all 34 million of us poor frozen bastards. Biggest group of stumbling, bumbling pricks you'd ever watch.

Timely you bring this up. While not rural CityTV announced yesterday that they're cutting 60+ anchors and reports and pretty much eliminating local news production in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Toronto.

About 50,000 people in town and 100,000 in the viewing area here and we are getting more local news. Plus, the quality is a lot better than it was a few years ago.

We actually never had a true local station here until this year. We had to watch DC, Baltimore, Hagerstown, MD, or Harrisonburg, Va news.

We used to have a tone of these when I was growing up in rural Mississippi. There were those few that were piped in from the back woods with some old church lady reading the news and local birthdays. The one that comes to mind I think the anchors both died. Last time I was there we still saw one going on. Most of our tv news came from Memphis. It is such a relatively small market that to watch them in comparison to, say, the drivel that NYC puts out as local news, makes them look like the locals you speak of.

Well out here in PA the local news has about three different broadcasts for the most of eastern PA, except Philly area. It has a big following and has its own channel pretty much, so I don't think they are going anywhere for a bit.
