I am a great advocate of abandoning the handshake and adopting the Japanese practice of bowing. It is far more respectful, and no germs are swapped in the process. I mean, why would you want to touch the most bacteria filled part of the body of a total stranger? And have you ever shook the hand of someone with sweaty palms? YUCK!

I don't mind the handshake or the hug, but the kiss on the side of the cheek thing always throws me. Firstly, I never know if the woman is going for a hug or a kiss, and so inevitably there's some awkward last minute adjustment required. And then, some people actually kiss the other person's cheek and some just kinda kiss the air. Frankly, I'm fine with either the handshake or the hug - they're totally different motions and easy to spot. Besides, last time I checked we aren't French.

I think the handshake is a very underrated thing these days. While it may spell trouble for GVAC's dreams of a germ free environment in which he can craft his evil plans without fear of illness, a handshake just feels like a solid gesture of trust. You can tell a lot about a person by their handshake as well I think.

I've evolved past the handshake and moved right to sniffing asses like a dog. Sure you get a few looks at first, but once they see you doing it to everybody else they tend to loosen up.

I think the handshake is the best methond, but it gets weird when you meet an old lady. Maybe it's just me, but I feel so uncomfortable shaking an 85 yr old womans hand.
