View Full Version : Top 10 QB's of all time

Since this is a discussion going on in the NFL thread, I figured Id put the question out there and see what the results are. I think we will see just how subjective the answers to this can be....
My Top 10
1. Joe Montana - 4 Super Bowl rings (1 before Jerry Rice came along), he revolutionized the passing game in the NFL. The west coast offense he ran is pretty much what most NFL teams try to recapture every year. 11 TD's, 0 Ints, and a 127 QB rating in the Super Bowl. Ridiculous.
2. Tom Brady - 3 Super Bowl rings throwing to receivers that are now washing cars somewhere. 1 fluke catch away from going 19-0, taking his 4th Super Bowl, and Joe Cools number 1 spot on this list.
3. John Elway - 2 Super Bowl rings, 3 more trips to the big game. Maybe the most clutch 2 minute QB of all time. Maybe.
4. Peyton Manning - 1 Super Bowl ring, with a 2nd perhaps in 2 weeks. Crazy stats and records. Strong challenger to Elway for that most clutch 2 minute QB of all time.
5. Johnny Unitas - 1 Super Bowl ring, 2 NFL Championship rings, The pioneer of the modern QB.
6. Brett Favre - 1 Super Bowl ring. Still bringing his teams to the conference championship game at 40 years old.
7. Steve Young - 1 Super Bowl ring, took over for a legend and actually filled his shoes. If it werent for those loaded Dallas teams he would definitely have at least 1 or 2 more rings.
8. Dan Marino - 0 Super Bowl rings, but owned the record book before Peyton Manning and Tom Brady came along.
9. Troy Aikman - 3 Super Bowl rings, tough clutch player. Prototypical QB.
10. Terry Bradshaw - 4 Super Bowl Rings. Which alone makes him belong on this list. Undervalued because he played on a team with a great running game and world class defense.
Honorable mention*
Fran Tarkenton, Dan Fouts, Warren Moon, Jim Kelly, Phil Simms, Bart Starr.

All time. Its not my fault in the 60's and 70's most teams only wanted to run. I just cant put guys like Len Dawson and Joe Namath up there with Elway and Montana.

Right place right time? To win 3 fucking Super Bowls? Since when is coming in when your team is 0-2 and the starting QB just got knocked out of the game the "right time". Oh, and what did he do? Thats right, went 11-3 and took his team to the Super Bowl and then beat a team that was the 2nd highest favored Super Bowl team of all time behind the fucking 1968 Colts. Youre right, he just lucked his way into that spot. Thats fucking retarded. You make him sound like Trent Dilfer.
And Manning over Joe Cool if he wins 1 more Super Bowl and loses in another??!? Are you fucking crazy? Manning never tops Montana until he has 4 RINGS. I dont care if he throws for a fucking million yards. 4 rings, or the most he gets is number 2. The man had a 127 passer rating overall and 0 interceptions in 4 fucking Super Bowls. Going against the best in the AFC in the most intense game there is. Show some fucking respect.

I think you just don't like the Colts (Well, I don't think. You've stated it constantly). Are you just adding up SB rings and not taking anything else into consideration? If you wanna play count the shiny jewelry, than people will probably change some of there answers.
I'll disagree that Brady is just lucky. The guy was a monster QB and did countless things for the Pats. I'd put Brady ahead as far as teams go, but I'd give it to Manning for indiviual efforts. He's got 4 MVP's to Brady's 1, and has more TD's, wins, and yards.
I'd still say Joe Montana just cause no one thought he was gonna be shit. Peyton was brought in as a superstar, and Montana came in as a nobody and killed it (you do have to factor in that Manning still has a few more years).
You also probably shouldn't get so angry. It's a game. Kids play it.

Sammy Baugh was so great that he actually led the league in passing, punting AND interceptions all in the same year.
Its so difficult to compare football players because there is so much constant change in the game, unlike baseball, which is essentially the same game it has always been, even back to the 20s. I agree with Hippo's list
Montana
Manning
Unitas
Except I would put it as
Manning
Unitas
Montana
I just can't think of anyone who has played the "position" better that PM has. With Montana, you could make the argument (and some might consider it to be unfair) that he is/was a product of the most revolutionary offensive system of the last 30 years, much like people make the argument that Marty Brodeur only puts up the numbers he does because of the system played by the Devils.
With Unitas, the game was just so different in the 60s that its just impossible to compare to anything nowadays, and I have no frame of reference in terms of actually watching him play.

The scary thing about Manning is that he's only 33 (doesn't turn 34 till March), and he's thrown for over 50,000 yards and 366 TDs already. That means he's averaging basically 4500 yards a season, and 33 TDs a year.
If he plays another 7 years, and his averages hold up for the most part (which they most likely will since he's never had a significant injury, nor really taken too much of a pounding), that means he'll end up with something in the neighborhood of career numbers of close to 81,000 career yards, and well over 500 TDs (Brett Favre, by comparison, has thrown for a little over 69,000 yards in his career and 497 TDs, and he hasn't missed a game in a 17 years). Those numbers are nuts.
When you throw in the fact that he's also pretty much also the offensive coordinator, its just absurd.

No I dont just count the rings, because if you look at my list there are guys on there with More rings (Aikman, Bradshaw) but are further down my list and Dan Marino is on there with no rings. But in my opinion its a VERY important part of a great QB.
A quarterbacks job is not just to pass the ball. Its to lead his team to victory. And the Super Bowl is the greatest measuring stick of that. Stats to me just arent as important because in football they are so easy to pad. Look how many late game garbage touchdown drives you see that mean nothing because the game is out of hand already? A perfect example of this is the year Manning broke Marinos record. Dont get me wrong, its still impressive, but the fact is he set the record for 1 yard touchdown passes in a season. That was because the Colts wanted him to get that record. Most coaches would just punch it in when they are on the 1. But he gets credit for all those lobs into the end zone.
And what makes me hate the Colts is people like Hippo that just start saying stuff like Peyton Mannings the greaest QB ever. Really? If he loses to the Saints he will have 1 Super Bowl ring for all those stats. Compared to a guy that won 4 and performed brilliantly in each one. Not rode his team in like someone like Trent Dilfer.
I put Peyton Manning as 4 on my list and said if he wins this year Id move him to 3. To me thats a realistic spot and fair. How can I not give the guy credit yet rank him that high all time? Not to mention if the team wouldve played for the undefeated season, and this game would be their last piece, I would be rooting for them right now. Just because Im a fan of history and like seeing history being made.

Actually it makes more sense. Alot easier to have better stats when you can call whatever play you want. And thats something that doesnt really impress me because until the mid-90's thats basically what most QB's did. It wasnt until then that coaches decided their plays were written in stone and QB's werent smart enough to change them or call their own plays.

It wasnt until then that coaches decided their plays were written in stone and QB's werent smart enough to change them or call their own plays.
But that also has to do with how complex offenses and defenses are nowadays. When Unitas was calling his own plays, there was nothing like Cover 2, or zone blitz schemes, 4 or 5 wide sets, or hell...even THREE wide sets. Most QB's don't call their own plays now not because they aren't smart enough, but rather, because its so much to take in and process in terms of game planning, video, and schematically week after week; its practically impossible. The fact that Manning can manage all that, and STILL be as successful as he is boggles my mind.
Even in Montana's day, offenses weren't NEARLY as complex as they are now. And in 5 years, everything will have completely changed again because of the continuing evolution of offenses and defenses. Part of what is so frustrating in a way about football is the fact that it changes so goddamn much, you can't compare anything over different eras and trends, and the time period between eras and trends keeps getting shorter and shorter because everything gets discussed, dissected and analyzed quicker and quicker.

The Worst QB of ALL TIME (http://www.pro-football-reference.com/blog/?p=138)
My Top 10
1 Joe Montana- body of work says it all
2 Johnny Unitas- Modern day QB before his time
3 Peyton Manning- Will break many if not all the records before it is over
4 John Elway- 5 Super Bowls with back 2 back wins riding into the sunset
5 Brett Favre- Is 2 NFC Championship game INTs in OT away from being #1 of all time
6 Tom Brady- 3 Rings and 4 trips and a monster season for the ages
7 Troy Aikman- 3 Rings. Class
8 Dan Marino- Best to never win nothing
9 Otto Graham- Won Championships almost every time
10 Steve Young- What might have been if Montana moved over sooner
