Toyota Halts Sales Over Safety Issue (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704905604575027671658649384.html?m od=WSJ_hp_mostpop_read)

The Japanese car maker, which long has been viewed as the leader in automotive quality, said it told its dealers to stop selling eight models, including the Camry and Corolla sedans, two of the biggest sellers in the U.S. market. Other models affected by the move include the RAV4 and Highlander sport-utility vehicles and the Tundra pickup truck.

I have one of the affected models. The floormat story has always been bullshit. One of the watchdog websites out there has several stories of Toyota Avalons, especially with push-button start, becoming uncontrollable and ending up across the street in the neighbor's living rooms, and other horror stories. This even happens in cars with no floormats. I'm keeping mine in the garage until they can figure this one out.

I saw a news story on this and if your accelerator is stuck in the on position put your car in neutral and apply the brakes. They had a story of a family that could not stop the car they were on the phone with 911 and then they wrecked into another car everyone died.

Who can blame them, they assemble accelerators. Dreaming of the day they get the promotion to assemble brake pedals.

Dealerships usually buy Toyotas frozen then thaw and sell them. Thats why it makes the Toyotas so bad if you freeze them again. They can only take so much. 99% of Toyotas were frozen at some point before they get to where you buy them.

yeah.
their lexus supposedly hit 120 when it crashed. im calling complete bullshit on this one.
do you know how long it takes for you to hit 120? at that point, put it in neutral and apply the brakes as you said.
something fishy is going on. even if the accel pedal is stuck, applying the brakes will slow down the car, if not stop it.

Hi. I cant come to work today because the Man told me to stop driving my car.

yeah, that'll fly.
everyone should take their car to the dealer to have it fixed. or even a local repair shop, with the toyota footing the bill. till you have your car fixed, proceed with caution.

ScottFromGA
02-03-2010, 08:56 AM
ok, so if he advises folks to not drive their Toyota's, are they going to pick up the tab on all the wrecker bills for having it towed to the dealership?

I bet that'll drive up a bill of bout 200 or 300 thousand dollars.....

If the gov tells you to stop driving the car, how do they enforce it? Will a cop pull yoi over and check if your pedal is new of know what to look for? Can the gov force Toyota to give you a loaner car till yours is fixed or if its an all day repair, are you stuck at the dealer?

topless_mike
02-03-2010, 09:04 AM
how many of these cars can the dealer possibly fix in one day?
if the dealers was smart, they would hold parts/service open 24/7 for the next 2 weeks or so.
just to get this done and over with. sure, it'll cost them in OT, but OT is cheaper than lawsuits, right? Not even lawsuits. Just blood on the hands should somebody else die because they couldnt get their car in to be fixed.

Yes, Obama must take responsibility for his actions. But, you can't deny that some blame lies with GWB. As long as our involvement with Afghanistan continues GWB must accept some responsibility for whatever its current state is. If it turns into a glorious democracy 25 years from now, GWB deserves some of the credit.
If Obama just pulls all the troops and lets Afghanistan turn into a tribal state where women are burned with acid for showing their face in public and worldwide terrorism increases. Who takes the blame?
Ever see the show Holmes on Homes. Guy comes in and fixes other home contractor's mistakes. He points out the errors and than fixes them. But, usually he rips everything out and starts from scratch because he doesn't want to build on the other guy's faulty work. Obama doesn't have that option. He can't restart.
I think we have two options. Admit defeat and leave, or commit to it and flood the country with soldiers and aid to stabilize it. Halfway doesn't work.
Unfortunately, I don't think the people want or understand our way of life, so leaving may be the answer. Just use intelligence better to stop terrorism instead of ground wars.

Bush sending 25-30K men to a mountainous country with rugged terrain was a bad call of judgement and strategic mistake

How did a Toyota gas pedal thread turn into a political debate? I have a 2003 Camry and everyone has been bugging me to get this fixed. I called Toyota and it turns out it only affects 2007 and beyond models. So I am good. I wonder why they started even using the new part if the old one worked fine? Was this part cheaper for them and they only care about profit?

Toyota had the "issue" with frames on their Tacomas rusting. They recall all of them, give out huge cash paybacks and imediately get rid of the used truck inventory. I think it's brilliant. My grandfather traded in his 2001 got 12 grand and paid 8000 cash plus his rebate for a 2009. Now that 2001 which he kept in imaculate condition ( Which would have run well into 200K miles is gone. It works in Toyotas favor.

Ford sales are up 25% (I think compared to last January but I didn't read) and GM sales are up 15% (same caveat as before)

Ford is in prime position to gobble up a lot of sales -- their entire lineup save the Focus is some of the absolute best out there. The Fusion is a brilliant car by any standards. The Fiesta is due on sale soon and that car is something that will confuse you as to whether you're driving a <$20k car or a >$60k car in terms of luxury trimmings.

Toyota's fall couldn't have come at a better time for America.

I agree that Ford has done well through this recession, Any sales is a boom for GM. But still, WHO on seeing that they can't get a Camry doesn't just go buy an Accord? You buy a Japanese car because they're quality and you've probably been let down in the past by Mexican made American cars.

topless_mike
02-04-2010, 06:26 AM
Ford, amazingly, has done 3 things right.
a) survived the recession. i mean, all 3 of the big ones have, but ford is really shining.
b) told the gov to fuck off when they were forcing bailouts upon the car industry.
c) realized that the "build it and they will buy it" doesnt fly anymore.

i think the japs have almost fallen into that mantra, since japanese car sales and popularity have steadily climbed for years and years now. i feel that they have almost stopped trying to build what the consumer wants (sans prius). pretty much what ford used to be.

will i buy a ford? no. respect them? a little bit more, but not much.

The new Fords actually are pretty good looking cars. Before I got my Camry in 2003 I had a Taurus and it was comfortable and didn't have a lot of problems. I went to the Toyota because I wanted a car that would last and last. It did and it setved me well. I think if I was to buy a new car now, that I would buy a Ford.

Dan 'Hampton

Because Ford has been steadily improving and this removes one of their competitors. Nobody is saying that people won't switch to a Honda, but the point is some of them won't, they'll switch to a Ford, hence, Ford wins. There's something to be said for the national identities of cars as well, in a circuitous way this problem tarnishes Honda's rep for some consumers. I'm not saying it's GOOD logic, but that logic goes "If Toyotas are broken and Japanese and Honda's are Japanese as well, Honda's must be broken as well."
