I have a home office, so mostly gasoline, per diem, and hours spent sleeping in.

I worked for a shipping company and had to pick up accounts at a Chase bank office building. There was a lot of stuff mixed in with their usual stuff being shipped to a local address though, and the person who sent it didnt even bother to tape the boxes shut, and as I am loading them in the truck, the lids are popping off and I can see it was filled with post its and rulers and paper reams and pens and office supplies. Im talking dozens and dozens of boxes and being shipped to the same address a few towns away. One box opened and all the stuff fell out in the parking lot and I am out there putting it back in and some woman from the bank came out and said "Wow, you have your hands full there!" I kind of complained that the boxes arent even taped up and she came over and looked at the address it was going and she started flipping out. She said that the address is that of an employee and she realized that the employee was stealing all the stuff and sing the company account to overnight it to their own home! I imagine the employee was "spoken to".
In this day and age with the scarcity of jobs and tight budgets and companies looking to shed people, I recommend that no one take anything from their jobs! Be smart, its not worth it. Just a thought.

People are that stupid, you would be shocked.
Where I work now, I work in an area that makes a lot of maps on these giant printer/plotters. I see they throw out lots of huge pieces of paper when they make a mistake on the maps they print. I have a puppy that I am house training and these big sheets of paper can come in handy controlling the mess and keeping the house clean. In the room where these printers are is a big tub of discarded paper, so I asked my boss if I can take some of the paper and use it for my puppy He said sure, because it actually will go to do good rather than be thrown out, so every day I go in there and roll up a bunch of sheets and take it home.
What I did was by asking permission, I established that I am not "taking" things and that if I did want something, I would ask. I never assume that garbage is "free" and I do not ever want to be comfortable just taking things home.
Im not trying to kill the thread by saying this, just passing along advice. I guess it depends on your work place attitude towards these things. After having been burned and seeing otherwise good people hauled out by security for stupid shit, I changed my attitude. When I was in high school I worked in a super market as a shelf stocker and store cleaner. There was a butcher that worked there and he used to steal six packs of beer and leave them out behind the dumpster on a daily basis. After work he would go back there and put them in his car when he went home. I guess the boss got wind of it and waited out behind the store when the guy left and surprised him when he came out from behind the dumpster with his beer and the boss was standing right there. After that they hired a new butcher.
Mostly post-it notes. Occasionally a pen.

i dont get to take supplies home. getting a hold of ANY office supplies is very difficult. it sometimes feels like trying to get things from the inside of a prison.
most of the time, requests take so long to process that i have to go out and buy my own stuff. we also do not get paper plates, etc. we have to bring our own stuff in.
i think the only things my job provides me with are internet access (which im sure they will take away soon), an old computer, and water (and only because it is required by law).

Asking your boss if you can take home his trash is not the same as asking to take home their office supplies. No office manager is just going to let you take home whatever supplies you want.
I take anything I need. Printer paper, printer ink, paper clips, pens, post its, white out, file folders, etc. I even use the office postage machine to send my personal mail out. I havent paid for postage in 5 years.

That is very unwise, imagine getting shit canned for taking a ink cartridge? Your job is not there to be your personal supply house. I am not trying to come across as a goody two shoes, I'm just trying to help you not end up unemployed without a chance to get unemployment. Usually if they fire you for theft, instead of prosecuting you. They will say you need to resign, but if you do, you can't collect unemployment. Its not worth it and your life will be drastically effected. A woman I used to work with used the company postage machine to send out 200 wedding invitations. Guess what wedding gift she got from my company?

Well my situation is a little different as its pretty much just me, my boss, and his daughter here. Im an independant contracto and I basically run the whole business here. Hes semi retired and does about 5% of the total work. His daughter is useless and gets paid to basically just sit around surfing on Facebook all day.
So when I need something, I just take it home. Kinda hard to get caught when Im leaving as my boss and his kid are already long gone when I leave. So the risk factor is significantly less then someone that works a normal office job.
Besides, compared to some of the other criminal things I used to do, this one is pretty much nothing. At two seperate times I went over 2 years without paying for gas.

Yeah company sponsored gas was especially nice 2 summers ago when gas was over $4 a gallon. Everyone would ask me how much gas was in Saint Louis and I would never pay close enough attention to even know.

Yea but this was a little different.
Once I worked for a car dealership and had a company card to gas up the cars for the lot. That was 9 months without paying for gas.
Another time I found some guys company gas card when I was working at a bar. Used it for a year and a half before it eventually expired.
Then there was a guy I knew that would steal credit cards. Once he used them enough hed hide them in my grandparents yard. So whenever I needed gas Id just grab one of those. That lasted 2 years too.

You are a terrible person.
My company pays for all my 'necessary' gas to travel to and from customers, airports, etc.
I just have a liberal interpretation of 'necessary.'

The only thing I do even remotley like this is make use of both a BJs card and a Costco card that I found that the people keep renewing. The only thing I am getting over on is that I am saving the yearly membership fee.
