So my buddy and I were having a discussion about which bands are soon to be eligible for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, within the decade.
Now, I hate the institution as much as the next person. But we got into a pretty good discussion as to what bands would fall into what tiers. It makes for a better argument to try to figure out what bands would go where as opposed to what would get in at all.
My list looks like this and keep in mind that this is not personal preference but where I think these bands fall historically (influence, critical acclaim, popularity, etc.):
Tier 1-Nirvana, Radiohead, Public Enemy.
Tier 2-Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Guns 'N' Roses, Green Day.
Tier 3-Wilco, Rage Against the Machine, NWA/Dr. Dre, Beck, NIN.
Tier 4-Guided By Voices, Soundgarden, Jane's Addiction, Pixies, Pavement, Smashing Pumpkins, 2 Pac, Sublime.
I think my first tier is a lock. All three were hugely influential and well received critically. They are all first balloters.
The 2nd tier is just a hair below. All of them will get in (yes, even Green Day who have two albums that are seminal to two generations) but not quite as a slam dunk as the top 3.
The other have some of the qualifications but not all. Wilco is huge critically but not overly successful album-wise. Rage had a short window.
The 4th tier need help to get in.
Anyway, I thought the concept was cool and wanted to hear some other bands you think should be in the mix or what your tiers would be.
IMO Soundgarden and the Pixies need to be higher on that list.

I'm going back and forth on moving Guns N' Roses to tier 1. Also, just from influence and popular resurgence, I would move Pixies from tier 4 to tier 3.

I don't see either of them getting in, at least on the first ballot. The Chili Peppers didn't get in first ballot. And they were bigger in almost every category than both of them.

It's really close. I just think the last 15 years or so hurts their legacy enough to bump them down a spot.
If this was for albums, Appetite would be 1st easily.

Soundgarden is a personal choice of mine and I think they should get in eventually. However the Pixies need to be higher and need to get in fast for the simple reason that they were such huge influences on so many bands higher in your list.

So were the Replacements. So were a bunch of other bands who aren't in. There needs to be a balance between influence and popularity usually.

Plus if you get em in soon, theyd probably still be willing to perform together at the induction. I hate the institution too. But GNR, Pearl Jam, Green Day, Smashing Pumpkins, Janes Addiction, NIN are all tier 1 to me. So silly debating this, but inevitable.

The Pixies are different from the Replacements in that they got their deserved acclaim from the public years later. The Replacements never got theirs. Influence plus popular support are enough to move them to tier 3 for me.

I am slightly sickened by the idea of how many bands will beat The Pixies into the HOF.

Move G&R up to tier 1. I don't believe they deserve it, but they'll be a sure shot to make it. I'd move the Pixies up to tier 3, along with the Replacements. As much as I love GBV and Pavement, they are even more unlikely to make it than the 'mats.

At least they are all rock or close to it.

yeah, for the most part it's a pretty decent class. I'm still annoyed that the Cars have never even been nominated, more so now that a gimmick band with mediocre music is in.

yuck
ONE is really rock and overall the R&R HOF is a joke. you could argue Gabriel tied to Genisis, but that's it. perhaps my definition of rock and roll is different than the voters bc it's really the pop star HOF overall

Like most HOF's, they're running out of legitimate inductees. If they're smart, they'll do it every 4 years like the Olympics so it's something special. They're making too much money on it now, but maybe after more people lose interest.

I will take Kiss Alive over any rap or Madonna tune.
The E Street band was tight and deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.
Nirvana changed rock and roll and brought on a new genre to rock and roll.
Cat Stevens had some fantastic tunes before going all muslim on us.
Hall & Oates were really good in the 80s. Yes kind of Pop but they had talent.
Linda held her own in the 70s.
I have no problem with ooldman and Epstien. They worked with 2 of the biggest bands in the world.
I know Ronnie hates Kiss but Alive was a great album (alive or not) very influential and they opened the door to many bands after them.
I think this is a good class and would listen to any of these artists. NO Rap bands in the hall of fame.

Once you have to start making these kind of arguments, the show is over.
Good night, everybody!

TWO, only TWO of these do I think deserve it
Nirvana, no doubter…the mike bossy/bobby orr of rock with unreal careers cut short.
E street band but only tied TO Bruce…alone they're a talented house band sorry, but it takes more than that to be tops in the biz.

It doesn't bode well, when most people only know your band when prefaced with "and the".

Wonder if max Weinberg will be one of those rare people inducted twice.

No blind faith? No d&d? Slacker.
