I am sure I left some lesser-known artists out (mostly from the punk-rock genre)...sorry.
Has this thread already been posted?

Easy.
1969 Fender Stratocaster, original pick-ups, maple neck, strung upside down for a left-handed motherfucking genius, Jimi Hendrix.

Gotta go with the lizard king
I gotta go with Hendrix, even though it is pretty close between Jimi and Kurt.

Got to go with Jimi I just want to hear what would have been next.....I guess that's true for all of them but Jimi is the vote for me...

Robert Johnson hands down. Its a little hard to tell with the old scratchy recordings but I firmly believe guitar wouldn't be what it is today without him & other even more forgotten musicians of the time. Anyone who can write something that Clapton admits is hard on the hands has to be doing something impressive. Also, every goddamn band in the 60's and 70's has stolen and/or covered him.

She falls into the category of the lesser known punk artist. On the other-hand, I'd be willing to bet no many people know who pigpen from the Dead was either......you make a good point, especially considering the horrible way in which she died.
DeathMetalMoe has a great point as well about Robert Johnson. I had to vote for Jimi though because as a guitar player myself, it just does not get any better than Hendrix----especially when he plays the blues.

I don't think Hendrix gets enough credit as a blues player. All of his music is imbued with the blues and it is great when he plays straight up blues.

Had to go with Kurt, because he's from my generation. It hit me hard when he killed himself.

Cobain noses out Morrison. Hendrix is over-rated.
Right. Cobain was a much better and influential guitarist.
